My netlabel...and yours?
I don't need to tell you that the music industry is broken.

You've got your favorite bands and artists, and probably a lot of them are independent, unaffiliated with a major label.

There's so much wonderful music being shared out there, freely distributed for pure enjoyment under the Creative Commons license.

So i, being late to the techology table, as usual, stared a netlabel with a friend, so we can share our prolific archives with perhaps dozens of people rather than just two or three.

Ok, that's my shameless plug. Now, how about you? Do you have a netlabel home for your tunes? Yeah, i know, everyone's on Myspace, but what about album length collections for download?
Or, failing that, what are some of your favorite sites for hearing new music? Favorite netlabel blogs?

Hey wow ok this is all fairly new to me... I have been thinking about setting up my own label so as to publish my music.. and as i am currently living away from home i cant quite do it yet. However this "Creative Commons License" which i am familiar with because Flickr provides it on their site for your photo uploads.... if you set up a weblable does this automatically protect your music under Creative Commons? or can i claim that even now without any site or organisation backing it up?

EDIT: Ok i may have just answered my own question...did a wiki on it....

Quote:
"A netlabel (also online label, web label, digi label or MP3 label) is a record label that distributes its music primarily through digital audio formats (mainly MP3 or Ogg Vorbis) over the Internet. While similar to traditional record labels in many respects, netlabels typically emphasize free distribution online, often under licenses that encourage works to be shared (e.g., Creative Commons licenses), and artists usually retain copyright. Most employ guerrilla marketing to promote their work; few netlabels earn money for participants.
Netlabels may have a considerably lower staff count than traditional record labels, in some instances being only a single individual in control of his/her music, maintaining sole ownership. Physical LPs, for example, are rarely produced by a netlabel, relying entirely on digital distribution and means of the Internet to provide the product."
But im still fairly interested in how you plan to use this set up?

Re: My netlabel...and yours?
Hey Dunwho et al.,

Yes, i'm new to the netlabel scene and am learning that it's all about advertising via forums, RSS feeds, blogs and other netlabels. But as it's strictly about sharing my music and discovering other artists' output, it's basically win-win.
My set up it to use the Creative Commons license to protect the authenticity of my works while making it freely available for download. I have applied the Attribution-Noncommercial- No Derivative Works license to my tracks. Basically, freely downloadable, but any use, commerce or remixing requires my permission.
There are thousands of netlabels out there, in varying states of seriousness. But the common factor remains - artists who just want to broadly distribute their tracks and share/explore inspirations. It's a fascinating subculture to explore and listen to!
