13 years of top 101
Q101 the alt-rock station in Chicago is doing a countdown where they play the top 101 songs each day for every year of their existence, starting in 1993. They start at 10AM and usually don't finish til just after 7PM. I don't think they let you listen online, but I found most of the lists, though they may be a little off.
http://www.rocklists.com/q101.html It's fun to hear all these classics and all the one-offs that you haven't heard since yet still remember perfectly. (King Missile - Detachable Penis anyone?) Many songs and bands have stood the test of time much better than others (Soundgarden vs. Toad the Wet Sprocket). And some bands like Green Day have managed to be on the top of charts for over a decade. It's also interesting to see all the musical trends, from grunge to post grunge to brief flickers of electronica to rap-rock to nu metal to pop-punk to sucky-old-alt-rock-wannabes-like-Nickelback to major indie rockers. Throw in some ska, too. It's often the tracks at the bottom of the charts that really show the type of music that was popular at the time. Today is 1997, and if you listen, you can catch Born Slippy at #15. (Between the Sneaker Pimps and Sublime.) Also on that site there's a list from 1999 of the 1011 Greatest Songs of All Time (meaning 1011 Greatest Loosely Defined Alternative Songs Since About 1980). There you will find: #904 Underworld - Push Upstairs #799 Freur - Doot Doot Inexplicably, no Born Slippy. |
