Depeche Mode in DC
ok - where to start

firstly, hearing "Just Can't Get Enough" was hillarious. They seem to be playing it as a part of their first encore regularly here in the US. They didn't play it at all during the Exciter Tour (unlike what Ffolkes stated in the DM news thread... I just checked the DM webpage for setlist info). And you know what... it kinda works!

Hearing them play the newer tracks definately made me like the album much better. The songs just seem to 'work' when played live. Best example of this is "Damaged People" - which on the album just kinda sounds like a throwback to their old quasi-S&M phase... but when played live - it sounds almost like an updated version of Bowie's "Life On Mars"

There was only one point in the show where I was totally unimpressed... and it seemed like my G/f and I were in the minority for this part -> when Martin comes on stage for the first encore and sang "Somebody"... it was just sooooooo incredibly shmaltsy. Everyone kinda got a tear in their eye, and grasped for their significant other - while the two of us were like... erm, ok?

I thought it was really really odd that the only tracks from the whole post-Violator period were: "I Feel You" "Home" and "Goodnight Lovers"

"I Feel You" was basically the same version as they have been playing for the past few years.

"Home" however - was quite interesting, they play basically the Air Remix version through the first verse / third of the song, and then change it into the album version

"Goodnight Lovers" well - it wasn't my favorite track off of Exciter, just basically b/c of that "soul brothers" line... in the context of this tour and setlist, however - it does make sense to play it... the only bad part of the track live, is they try and make it be a singalong and because it never even was a proper single... the audience doesn't quite get into it... but that also might be b/c of the fact it's a very soft song following NLMDA, and Dave "shhh's" a lot during the track

by the way...
Did anyone else try to call that phone number that's projected on that "ball" to the left of the stage? I don't think many people noticed it... my g/f and I barely got the number down, but it starts with a 0800 so I don't know if it's a legitimate number...

Oh - it was projected during "Personal Jesus"

Well i recall seeing them playing it on some swedish festival a few years back (saw it on a swedish telly program where the whole shit was broadcasted) and the song definitely was there, much to my surprise. Dunno if it was the exciter tour, but it really wasn't from Ultra because that'd make it too old.

Could it maybe be Gahan's "paper monsters" tour? Did the man play DM songs?

I remember that JCGE was very different there than the album version. More of only a looped mantra of the phrase "just can't get enough" over and over... with Gahan getting crazy shirtless as usual.
