The Crystal Method - Vegas
its been a loooooooooooooooooooooong time since i last listened to this CD. Im talking, years even. Because i got it back in 1999, wow, what a great year. Anyways, its bringing back some really good memorys. Isnt it just so cool how a record can have the effect to bring back memorys and the feelings to the memorys?
Check this album out if you have never, just promise me youll check it out with a sound system that can make some decent bass. I never listened to their newest stuff, any opinions? |

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
Oh yeah! The Crystal Method rock... saw them live back in 2001 and it was a show I'll never forget.
All of their studio cds are different.... Vegas - lots of slow breaks and smooth synths. Tweekend - harder, more ferocious beats, a few guitars, and explicit lyrics. Legion of Boom - slow breaks, hard guitars, and lots of vocal house stuff. ....but I love all three! They are now working hard creating the soundtrack for the film "London".

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
i too recently pulled vegas back out on a long car trip. so much of that record feels like its solely about production. and it is. the songs are very simplistic and very easy to get into. some of the songs are so simple that they just get boring quickly though. on tweekend you could hear them trying to come up with things that were more complex but that didnt turn out too well. and the production went to hell.

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
Don't want to step on everyone's toes, but I remember a long time ago on dirty where some people explained why they hated the Crystal Method and why they basically just sucked. Stories of how their songs used all of the demo sounds from their equipment, and how their live show is all pre-programmed which they try to hide by blinding the audience with flashing lights. Someone told a story of how the power cut out in the middle of one of their sets and when it came back on, the song started up again automatically like nothing had happened while they scrambled around trying to turn everything off.
I was totally convinced after hearing all of this, and I can't go back. But don't let me rain on your parade. |

HERE IS MY CRYSTAL METHOD STORY
i went to see the first community service tour at the palladium in worcester, MA. this tour had orbital headlining, with the crystal method, the lo-fi allstars, and john kelley. during their set, the skinny dude from TCM DROPPED HIS KEYBOARD ON SOME POOR GIRL'S HAND. He also sat in front of the stage and let the plebes touch his keyboard. it didn't make any noises when it fell, nor when the audience started smashing the keys with their hands. they were also too loud, but not as loud as orbital was. |

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
It's true that TCM use samples, loops, and probably pre-program parts of their gigs...but who in electronic music doesn't?!
i have read several interviews by the boys in TCM, in "EQ", "KEyboard", and "Remix"...and it definitely sounds like they put a lot of work into their albums. They feature live music, too (from Wes borland, Jon Brion, etc), and are excellently produced. When i think of bands using crap loops or demos, TCM doesn't come to mind. "Vegas" was an album that lived in my stereo during 98-99, and it still is a dark, deep beauty. I'll admit, i'm less a fan of "Tweekend" (too rap-rock) and "Legion of Boom" (too single-paced), but both of their mix albums are amazing.
