Thanks for the update on that - i am curious about the Spikee/Leave home... they did a fantastic version with Cappe Ffuno at Pukkelpop 2000 - we have an audience recording of it, it is one of my fav underworld live moments |

Regarding the elaboration, I have to say that I'm a complete n00b at music-making and track spotting. Plus, at my age, memory likes to play a trick on me from time to time. That said, don't nail me to my exact words. (@Janie: We know how to talk our way out, don't we?) So, having partially recovered from the trip and based upon my notes from the gig, here comes--please bear with me... The circumstances A beautifully decorated meadow, lying at the feet of a concrete monster of a highway bridge, on the shores of the river Main in Hanau near Frankfurt. A crowd - allegedly, more than 23,000 - of uber-minimal, trendy, super-individually tattoed, carefully shaped, pseudo-modestly clad Frankfurt-sy clubbers (prejudices, anyone?). Fierce sun, some clouds, 30° C; several sunburns of varying degrees of carcinogenic effect. A zeppelin, a helicopter, several planes taking off from Frankfurt airport. A maze of tents and blankets, effectively suppressing field movement. Rick, Karl, and Darren enter the stage at about 5:30 pm, and leave at a little past 7 pm, making it a short festival gig of 90+ mins. I think I saw Rick coming up smoking. *wagging finger reproachfully* Karl wears a shiny, glittery black sequin shirt; Rick, a flanell shirt *wagging finger ferouciously*; Darren, some pale shirt. I agree with Karl: Catering is good, security helpful and respectful (!). The set Unfortunately, at my distance from the stage - an estimated 50+ m - the sound is rather dull; esp. in the beginning, voice and heights sound muted, swelling and decaying in random waves. The bass is acceptably loud and clear. 1 Mmm Skyscraper, I Love You. Mmhhhh, nice for starters. 2 A short transition into Dark Train (I think). Is this gonna be an olden set? Mmhhhh, me likes. 3 Juanitaaaaa. Yummers. The crowd is still restrained. Not many UW fans in my vicinity, I guess. 4 An buoyant Cowgirl breaks the ice. Heavy stompings occur. (River of Bass is right, there wasn't any Rez.) 5 King of Snake piano version with Karl on guitar. Recognition of the tune leads to a steep increase in dance activity. 6 KoS fades away, followed by a ruined transition? 7 A break in the set: Apparently mid-intro, there enters some *very* house-y track I neither recognise nor like too well; lots of new lyrics. EDIT: It's the new track, Between Stars. 8 Two Months Off with Karl on guitar. More recognition, more club affinity, more cheering. *scribbles down The Manual, pt. 2* 9 Now comes the most embarrassing - for me - part: I took a note it was Spikee, interspersed with various snippets - measured in seconds rather than minutes -, e.g., some additional drums; the "acid", "squeaky" bits of Leave Home; and an UW tune I cannot remember; might have been Cherry Pie. Or was it Cherry Pie in the first place, having parts of Spikee embedded in it...? You see the reason for my excuses above. 10 A bassy (non-2003) Born Slippy.NUXX. Crowd cheers at an expected maximum. Even the girls in front of me rise from their blanket. 11 Transition into an energetic Moaner. Karl dances in front of the video wall, above Rick's and Darren's heads. Crowd on a rampage. 12 Encore: standard Jumbo. Even one of the girls to my left rises. Karl thanks "our friend Sven" for "having us here". Exit stage; all three in a good mood (as confirmed by Karl's post talking of "dancing in a field"), embracements, smiling. Conclusion All in all, it was an happy day out in the field due to my beloved Underworld and a brilliant Sven Väth DJ set. Not the strongest UW performance I've witnessed but a solid festival delivery with Karl obviously having fun. Hardly any new material, although there seem to have been all kinds of new "tweaks" throughout I can't put my finger on. I didn't notice too much of the "gear frying and freaking" Karl mentioned on the diary today (except the ruined transition, see above). The pure, though defective, setlist: Mmm Skyscraper, I Love You Juanita of Between Stars Spikee .NUXX Moaner Jumbo Here's waiting for the next UW set on their own... froops EDITS: Added YouTube links. Added Between Stars; repaired links. Last edited by froopy seal; 07-11-2009 at 02:06 AM. |

They did exactly that! A youtube video came up yesterday, but the forums were down for me, and right now I don't have youtube access.
It's the full Spikee (incl. the guitar) with the mentioned Leave Home Sweep + Karl singing the "feel yourself" bits. Sounded awesome. |
