Try the Cocoon gig. There's no vocoder, and it plainly sounds like "bird, chrome" to me.

i think the middle lyrics to crocodile are something like:

"is a croc - o - dile, the sammmmeeeeeeee"

Look at the Lovely Broken Thing gallery again...
It has got the lyrics for Ring Road!

after listening to this a few more times, the synthy vocals absolutely say, "is a crocodile..." what I'm not sure is the second part. "the same" seems to fit though. anyone else have a thought?

i'm not convinced, tho i like the theory that it's crocodile... but i've got no idea wot he's singin tho

if you listen to the innervisions orchestra mix (i love this mix), there's a nice breakdown where this bit sounds a lot clearer / less treated. sounds summat like

"needs a car summat oooopposiiiiiite"

which makes no sense, eh. i dunno. actually i'm not convinced he's singing in english!

ah. ive only really listened to it on the album version. with headphones (and maybe im projecting what i want to hear) it sounds like "is a croc-oh-dile" pretty clearly. ive been wrong before, and wouldnt be surprised if i was way off :P
