now if you put together all the best chems tracks, that would make a decent album, but thats about it - they have an albums worth of decent material spread over their entire career... imo

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour
well - I think that that's a bit unfair BSS

I think they've always had really strong singles from every album, and at least one or two great 'album tracks' (well - debatable w/ Push the Button). I would rate their Greatest Hits package as one of the best I've ever bought (up there with New Order's "Substance")

although, I am a bit disappointed with this newer, 'shiny' version of the chems
like - tracks like Denmark, Do It Again, Galvinize...

like before, there was this slight edge of kind of embracing the darker effects of drugs (setting sun, private psych..., under the influence, etc etc) but now - they're aligning more towards the whole "hey let's party" sort of vibe (inhabited by the likes of Fatboy Slim *yawn* and so forth)

it's almost as if - instead of progressing like their counterparts like the Orb or Underworld, they're going through a reverse evolution. In fact, I'd say this started happening around the time they did the remix of that one FBS track (which, I think was post Come With Us & pre- GH)

that being said, I still haven't heard the new album (PM anyone?) and I'm just going by their post Greatest Hits releases

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour
Yeah, they've been responsible for a lot of great singles, but as an album band, though the quality may have dropped over time, there are still a lot of great cuts, imho. DYOH and EPD still rank among my favorite LPs. Almost 100% killer. Though i'm not a big fan of the more pastoral tracks on Surrender, it's still 70% great, same with Come With Us. Only with Push the Button do i feel they're retreading and not too enjoyable. I agree joe, with the "let's party" vibe that comes out of recent singles like "get Yourself high", "Galvanize" and "Do it Again", but then, most of the singles have been about havin' a good time...you have to go deeper into the albums to get the really trippy, dare i say "meaningful" tracks...

But like every Chems release since Dig in '97, i'll be looking forward to release day and replaying the record a hundred times. Hopefully it'll strike a nerve quickly (as 4 of 5 records did from first listen before).

That tune rocks, and the videoclip too.

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour
i read an article when come with us came out and the guy had it right on. said that basically the chemical brothers had lost their spirit of experimenting in the studio. maybe because software/hardware had made things a bit more cut and dry 2000 onwards (recycle instead of manually cutting and mapping breaks/samples comes to mind), but everything that made the production so gritty and beautiful from e.p.d and d.y.o.h. was gone. they werent setting loop points in strange places, werent distorting entire mixes with guitar pedals. it all became too clean and lost all of that funk/experimental/drug fueled sound. they were never ones for amazing song writing. they were good at making these ridiculous collages of samples (the first two albums and singles were almost entirely created with samples). and theyve suffered since they stopped doing it.

personally i think surrender was still an amazing album even if clean. it was a strange marriage of styles.

So in other words.. they have since "matured" and possibly stopped taking illicit substances.

Indeed. Actually managed to give it a few more listens but it's so... uninteresting. Yeah, uninteresting...
