Re: Orbital reform
So, looks like it's not just a one-off gig. Does this mean a reformation in the studio, as well?

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009
the thing that orbital HAD, was that they actually played their gear in front of us. it took a mountain of synths and drum machines and sample products to make that sound, and it was fun to see all that commotion. there is something to be said for a person(s) who loads up all kinds of shit and brings it to the show, and actually RUNS a sequencer. sometimes the sequences line up, other times it's a trainwreck. anyone who attempts to sync 5 synthesizers and a sampler and a couple of drum machines knows the issues of sync. it's a bitch. shit, just try to sync up two laptops with a single MIDI click, it's often times worthless.

Orbital was probably the best electronic show i've ever seen. I was young enough, high enough, and the venue was small enough. If you get the chance, do it...even if they do play that horrible bunch of samples through halcyon. shame... that's one of the most beautiful techno tracks ever, and they had to go and fuck it all up.

that said, maybe it's all over....

...they just over-tinkered imo. i heard it when they were just using the belinda carlisle bit and it was amazing. then they played sonar soon after bon jovi had played barcelona and, well...

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009
Re: Professor - yeah, i hear you about synching and the horrible frustrations of some parts being even just a little off-beat. It's a mess.

Though i've never personally seen Orbital live (i'd very much like to!) i have heard them perform on countless bootlegs. Kudos to them indeed for pulling off fairly complicated and bautifully-sounding compositions live. But to be honest, their live sound isn't that different from the albums. As Stimpee said above, their setlists were pretty fixed throughout the tours and they performed the tracks virtually the same each time. On some of the early stours (93 and 94, anyway), there was a bit more improv. But in the latter days, it was only on Halcyon with its Bon Jovi, Belinda Carlisle, and Darkness samples that you could count on the track maybe sounding different or unique.
Underworld are and always have been the kings of live improvisation, and they didn't take tons of gear along to do it.

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009
Very cool stimp. I started with the "Work 1989-2002" and was just barely intrigued enough to get their albums, which ended up being way better than I thought. 3-minute versions of "Halycon" and "Are We Here?" didn't really make much of an impression. Hopefully this turns out way better!!
