The Crystal Method - Vegas
its been a loooooooooooooooooooooong time since i last listened to this CD. Im talking, years even. Because i got it back in 1999, wow, what a great year. Anyways, its bringing back some really good memorys. Isnt it just so cool how a record can have the effect to bring back memorys and the feelings to the memorys?
Check this album out if you have never, just promise me youll check it out with a sound system that can make some decent bass. I never listened to their newest stuff, any opinions? |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
well - I haven't been a huge fan of theirs... more of like "oh, that track's pretty good"
but -> I would absolutely definitely recommend their second mix cd Community Service II |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
i would have to agree.

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
Oh yeah! The Crystal Method rock... saw them live back in 2001 and it was a show I'll never forget.
All of their studio cds are different.... Vegas - lots of slow breaks and smooth synths. Tweekend - harder, more ferocious beats, a few guitars, and explicit lyrics. Legion of Boom - slow breaks, hard guitars, and lots of vocal house stuff. ....but I love all three! They are now working hard creating the soundtrack for the film "London".:) |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
I heard "High Roller" in a "don't do meth" video that was shown at school.

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
i too recently pulled vegas back out on a long car trip. so much of that record feels like its solely about production. and it is. the songs are very simplistic and very easy to get into. some of the songs are so simple that they just get boring quickly though. on tweekend you could hear them trying to come up with things that were more complex but that didnt turn out too well. and the production went to hell.

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
Don't want to step on everyone's toes, but I remember a long time ago on dirty where some people explained why they hated the Crystal Method and why they basically just sucked. Stories of how their songs used all of the demo sounds from their equipment, and how their live show is all pre-programmed which they try to hide by blinding the audience with flashing lights. Someone told a story of how the power cut out in the middle of one of their sets and when it came back on, the song started up again automatically like nothing had happened while they scrambled around trying to turn everything off.
I was totally convinced after hearing all of this, and I can't go back. But don't let me rain on your parade. |

HERE IS MY CRYSTAL METHOD STORY
i went to see the first community service tour at the palladium in worcester, MA. this tour had orbital headlining, with the crystal method, the lo-fi allstars, and john kelley. during their set, the skinny dude from TCM DROPPED HIS KEYBOARD ON SOME POOR GIRL'S HAND. He also sat in front of the stage and let the plebes touch his keyboard. it didn't make any noises when it fell, nor when the audience started smashing the keys with their hands. they were also too loud, but not as loud as orbital was. |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
It's true that TCM use samples, loops, and probably pre-program parts of their gigs...but who in electronic music doesn't?!
i have read several interviews by the boys in TCM, in "EQ", "KEyboard", and "Remix"...and it definitely sounds like they put a lot of work into their albums. They feature live music, too (from Wes borland, Jon Brion, etc), and are excellently produced. When i think of bands using crap loops or demos, TCM doesn't come to mind. "Vegas" was an album that lived in my stereo during 98-99, and it still is a dark, deep beauty. I'll admit, i'm less a fan of "Tweekend" (too rap-rock) and "Legion of Boom" (too single-paced), but both of their mix albums are amazing. |

couple tracks off of vegas i remember fondly. "she's my pusher" abused my repeat button kinda often... and i remeber trying to sneak in a CD player on a field trip (not allowed) so a friend and i could listen to vegas... but, ah, one could do a lot better w/o trying too hard. |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
Well at the show I went to at the House of Blues in Orlando, the music sounded great and you could tell it wasn't just the cd playing.....and if it was it was playing in 24-bit with lots of new twists and turns added!:eek::eek:

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
well - here's my CM story:
So, after my last final as an undergrad - I decided to drop by Tower Records, as they were doing a in-store signing... to which no one was there, as it was the last day of finals, and most of the people were gone. we talked for a while, and I gave them a mix cd that I had made for a couple of friends. The one guy w/ hair flipped out on how cool the packaging was for the cd's that I made - and how I had Evil Nine on the mix... as at the time, they really didn't have much of a following, especially here in the US. So after a while, I just was like "what the fuck" and asked if he could hook me up with some VIP's - he said sure... flashfoward to that night... no VIP tickets, but I wasn't too pissed, as Evil Nine were great then CM played a while, as as the evening progressed... they got more and more drunk, until the one with hair climbed out of the booth, and onto one of the speakers, while the other guy played Bjork's "Joga" then the guy with the hair proceeded to stare me down, and 'sing' along to the Bjork track, never looking away from me. I then asked my g/f and a friend we met up there, if what I perceived to be true... and they agreed, and also thought it was really really weird so yea - they were good but I was totally creeped out |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
i saw TCM in Rochester, NY when they toured in support of Vegas (no Orbital, just a long wait while they filled the entire room with smoke machine haze. Lunatic Calm was supposed to play but they didn't show up)... the light show was pretty and i was really into the music (Busy Child was the first record I bought when i got turntables... WAY before Vegas was out) but I remember thinking the one guy trashing his keyboard like that was pretty out of place. It BARELY makes sense when Trent Reznor does it in the midst of his angsty release to sold out arenas, but for a Las Vegas DJ to do it to a small crowd? stories of Jimi Hendrix's manager keeping the one guitar alive enough for him to beat the crap out of it every night instead of a new one came to mind. I also spied either one or both of the guys standing there drinking beer while their song played, but can't attest 100% to both of them at the same time... so who knows. It was an OK show

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
If you're interested with crystal method:D, and you're running itunes (much safer than limewire or those russian sites, and it supports the artists who make the music)
check this link -- the "euro club hits" series: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/M...Club+Hits+Vol+ This series the "Euro Club Hits" I think has some real winners on it..... |

OK. I'm convinced. One way ticket to Instabanistan. |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
and here i was wondering why anyone would bump a crystal method thread.
it did make me breeze through their debut album (the only one worth remembering, let alone listening to) and "she's my pusher" is the only one that still manages to be pretty decent. the rest... eh. it was good at the time. played a lot of SNES games to it. |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
i saw them live in 2006, and it was ~ok. they didn't do much more than tweak filters a bunch, with midi controllers, motion sensors, and it would've been cool and acidey but it was all digital equipment and it sounded like they had it 100% sequenced with minimal input from scott or ken.

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
Their "Drive" EP was recycled garbage and not that great, so I can't wait until they pull the curtain off of the new stuff they've been recording for a while now.
I still don't get the hate:confused:......they were just fucking awesome live and all 3 of their cds have some cool tracks on them imo. |

Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
Oh man, back in 1997, i used to listen to Vegas almost constantly. Well, alternating with Dig Your Own Hole!
I still enjoy Vegas, it has a dark atmosphere and some cool beats...especially "Trip Like I Do", "Bad Stone" and "High Roller". But TCM has had a bit of an identity crisis. At the start, they were supposed to be the US's answer to the Chemical Brothers and big beat stylists. With "Tweekend", they started adding more live guitar and rap, and even worse, with "Legion of Boom", using the abyssmal Wes Borland. But i agree with Mongoose, even those albums have some fun tracks ("Wild Swet and Cool", "Tough Guy", "Bound Too Long", heck even "Born Too Slow" come to mind.) In their DJ sets and Community Service mix albums, it seems TCM want to be breakbeat nowadays. I guess this is "evolving", but it also seems a little bit go-with-the-flow. I actually like the "Drive" EP...just a cool uptempo mix, never mind the recycled tunes. |
Re: The Crystal Method - Vegas
I don't really understand all the Crystal Method hate either. My theory is that TCM was compared to the Chemical Brothers so much, Chems fans were like "TCM are not as good as the Chems..." and it just escalated from there. Many people seem to think TCM are the cheap U.S. knock-off of the Chems, when they actually aren't all that similar at all...
They were the reason I got into electronic music, and I think their impact on the genre is undeniable. That being said, they have been in a weird identity crisis for a couple of albums. They need to reconnect to their roots and give things another go. Vegas still sounds as ground-breaking to me now as it did when I first heard it! |
