Re: Good Day Today
dc_04 first mentioned this yesterday morning.

I think if you listen to it enough times, you'll realize it most certainly is Underworld. There are very telling signs.

First clue. The pulsing synth pad is total Underworld. At 0:57/2:21/3:32 there's an added percussive pattern that just feels like Rick Smith. The vocal is just heavily processed. It sounds like Karl's brand of optimism to me. I also believe they gave that track to Morning Becomes Eclectic because the show is extremely popular and listened to around the globe. Their web audience is probably larger than their audience in the LA area. The vibe of Good Day Today is right for the station. Finally, google Good Day Today and the artist Underworld. See? Google it without Underworld and just add 'song' or 'radio' add 'myspace' to see if it's been posted to some other band's myspace. It's not there. It's Underworld.

Re: Good Day Today
fwiw, 'morning becomes eclectic' isn't just any 'playlist' on any 'state-side NPR station'.

it's arguably the most important music broadcast in north america, and over the years the hosts have been the first to break just about every act you can think of.

i'd say the chances of it being a 'fake' are slim to none.

i'm more than happy to be proven wrong if it's on the album when it's released or if someone finds confirmation. but until then i remain dubious.

i mean come on, how many of us have been listening to karl's vocal style for the majority of our adult lives? he doesn't just have a tone that can be masked with a vocoder. he has a particular pronunciation and enunciation quality that's unique to him alone. speaking or singing, when you hear karl you KNOW it's karl. but on this song we're debating it. i just don't feel karl's linguistic fingerprint on it. like i said, i could be totally wrong and i'm just looking for a flaw because i dislike the song. but even my husband, who isn't a fraction of a fan i am, said it didn't sound like karl's delivery style.

so i don't know. he could be trying something new and trying to step out of his "voice." but it's just not clicking with me with the same certainty that some of the rest of you have.
it's definitely not karl's voice, i didn't think that was being debated! has rick ever sung with a vocoder effect? to me it just sounds like a computer voice, or... here, remember when frampton comes alive came out and peter frampton used the tube thing to play guitar inside his mouth while he moved his mouth to make words, even though the sound wasn't coming from his mouth? i'm thinking it could be something along the lines of that.

how do we know it's not juanita?

I can't decide whether i'm going to use 'definitely not karl's voice' or 'how do we know it's not juanita' as my new signature.

Re: Good Day Today
there are tons of ways of using a vocoder or an autotune. autotuners get the vocals distorted beyond recognition if you manipulate them. example: Kid A by radiohead. thom is singing thru an autotune.

the first bits are clearly karl. the chorus, where he raises his voice, sound filtered and layered. if scribble has vocals layered, how about this track? maybe they're not scattered around, but placed in the same line to provoke distortion. like shielding the voice for the mood.

EDIT: rick used to sing when he was in freur probably one of the craziest sights i have ever seen

There are clips of them performing Boy Boy Boy live where he does indeed sing with a vocoder effect.

Not at all sure about this one. Will have to listen a few more times, but it really doesn't "grab" me at all. Loving the new Scribble though.
