this album follow the same process tool's had since aenima...make it arty and well over done. i guess that's why they're called 'prog metal'

anyway..this album is frickin awesome! another 75 minute masterpiece that has to be heard completely in order to fully appreciate.

there are a lot of tribal undertones throughout..similar to lateralus.. the biggest surprise i found was in the 2nd half of the track 'intension' tool uses broken beats..much to like of autechre/squarepusher/telefon tel aviv. this was really cool.

and if you thought vicarious was amazing...wait til you hear rosetta stoned. a long and complicated piece that climaxes beautifully..much like schism only 11 minutes long.

its a good album..i will definitely buy it.

wake up early. when i bought tickets a few years ago they sold out in a half hour.

however, you may be able to find a way to work for the event security just for that night and get paid to see them with the slight risk of not being able to actually hear the show.

Just came back from buying the album (it's out here today) in FNAC. They had a set of free passes to their Madrid gig. That means 2 TooL concerts in 3 days, one in a big bullring being able to sit far away from the stage to check the visuals, and another one in a small, intimate venue with low roofs.

You've been able to clearly tell since Aenima that Tool no longer works together. The band writes the music and then MJK writes lyrics over it. The result is way too much forced-ness, IMHO... the music is way too overcomplicated for what it's trying to do. Also, there's been no evolution, at all. This sounds like Lateralus part 2. I frankly don't care if they use some Autechre-esque beats in a song, it sounds more like a gimmick than a musical step forward. All this after 5 listens.

Hearing MJK sing is always a treat since he is the best male singer I know of. But at the same time, this album is leaving me to desire A Perfect Circle writing a glorious masterpiece so I can have my cake and eat it too.

So, I guess I'll have to wait another 5 years for a good Tool album... but then again, maybe Adam said it best -- I no longer smoke pot, so maybe I'm missing something because of that. Who knows?

I don't know that you're really being accurate about the songwriting. Reading Blair's updates on their website, it sounded like they worked together more on this album than the previous one.

I haven't heard the new album yet, so keep that in mind with the opinion I'm about to present.

I was talking with a friend who thinks that Aenima is far superior to Lateralus - I disagree. I do think Aenima is a poppier album. But as I thought about it more after our conversation, I realized:

1)I think the low points of Lateralus are inferior to the low points on Aenima - The Patient is meh, Parabol/Parabola I could take or leave.

2)I think the high points of Lateralus are much better than anything on Aenima: Triad and Lateralus are the best things they've written.

So, I'm not clear on what direction they're going. For most bands, I feel they move in one direction at a time: better or worse. To reach higher peaks, but be less consistent....? I don't know what to expect. So I'll go in with an open mind, both figuratively and chemically, and see what I think on Saturday.

Oh, and, for the record, I'm more or less off the pot, too. Doesn't do much for me these days. I loves me some pot cookies, but after years of suspecting that I experience an increase in irritability as a cost for the ludicrous happiness I get from them, I've decided that I probably won't be making another batch. LSD is where it's at. Wonderful, wonderful creative stimulus. Working on music on that shit is the bomb. As is listening. And I don't think I pay any price in terms of mood. Pot cookies make me nearly ecstatic, they seem to have a definite chemical effect on mood which seems to lead to a chemical imbalance. LSD doesn't seem to have an effect on mood in the same way: trips can be happy, sad or baseline, so I don't seem to pay a price in that respect with subsequent after effects. Except lack of sleep.

If that's true, it certainly doesn't sound like it. A shame about you not liking The Patient -- that's one of my favorite Tool songs.

It is basically speculation on my part. Combination of him describing songwriting sessions, and a description from the guy from Def Tones (deft tones?) on sitting in on a recording session of theirs. It could be off, but the impression I got was that they worked quite a bit together on this one.
