Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
I noticed one important difference - the hi hat in Appleshine is turned down (at least, on the sampler - don't have the full version yet). I was really hoping they made that change since it always felt to me like it overpowered the track.

Hell of a thing to try listening to it as a stand-alone. Almost wanna make a thread on how perception changes from what an album is expected to be, and how these tracks were revealed to us. I’m almost certain I would have a different reaction to these tracks if this was presented traditionally, which I think is the point of their frustrations with the format!
As a statement on its own, the samplbum works, which is a relief, and I’d definitely place it in the top half of their output if released on its own. But it wasn’t! And it isn’t that! The box set is the real object, and it’s fucking great even if a fifth of it is ridiculous! I love it, and that contrast must be part of the point of doing this. |

BTW, both releases are available on all streaming services now. If you don't have a streaming subscription, and, say, you don't want to buy the digital because you already bought the box set and are waiting for that to arrive, you can listen to all the tracks on YouTube for free (with ads), from the record label.

As a standalone album, the Sampler is great. The flow between the tracks is brilliant and, for the most part, I think they made wise decisions with the choices, although it's unusually low in downtempo numbers. The 95 second version of Mile Bush Pride is pretty baffling in there, and I'm still not sure on Imagine a Box, but otherwise all good.
The largely gapless flow is very good, and reminds me of Dubnobass in that regard. Appleshine into Drum Street and, particularly, Schilpol Test into BYTWB are superb. If this was all we'd had, I'd certainly be happy with it. It's a sharp, concise techno album from a band who, for me, have actually been far more interesting in their non-techno work for the past 15 years. Probably give it a few more listens in the coming couple of weeks, but still eagerly awaiting the box for the proper Drift experience. |

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
I also thought it would be odd listening to an "album" which is all tracks you knew as singles or as parts of different EPs but it really does work very well. The transitions felt more natural than they did on the EPs and there is a good flow to it.
Track-for-track it very much reminds me of Beacoup Fish - starts with an excellent chilled track, then a bunch of bangers, then some more stripped back & experimental stuff. "S T A R" would be the "Kittens" spot and "Imagine a Box" is the weird groove tune similar to "Something Like a Mama". Of course the closers are quite different but I think they're both quintessential UW epics so there ![]() |
