Re: Special Editions of new album
I'd love some extra artwork - a la the special editions of Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree, which featured a few postcards with artwork and a poster, or UNKLE's War Stories which had a forty-page booklet of artwork printed on really good quality paper. Something like that, maybe?

Personally I'd kill for some little videos much like Rick's remix video or the 'where are the supermodels?' vids on YouTube, but I'm a bit of a dork like that...

Re: Special Editions of new album
Underworld should look no further than Nine Inch Nails for special edition inspiration. Check this out:

http://ghosts.nin.com/images/popup_product_deluxe.jpg

And that's not even the most expensive package.

NIN is leading the way with this kind of stuff for the independent artist. The music itself is essentially free, so give us something precious like a beautiful physical package or multi-tracks or a book. Underworld have cultivated a fanbase of aesthetically-minded creative types and we would eat something like this up.

It's also, I suspect, a license to print money. Here is the most expensive NIN package, priced at US$300. They limited production to 2,500 and they sold every single one of them. That's US$750,000 before expenses. That's astonishing. I've no doubt Underworld could do something similar.

Re: Special Editions of new album
nah; if you REALLY want to do something special, you've got to outdo pixies' minotaur retailing at $495

Minotaur - Limited Edition includes:

•All five Pixies' studio albums in the following formats: 24k gold plated CDs; 180 gram virgin vinyl 12" LPs cut from the original analog tapes; Blu-ray audio mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/192; DVD mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/96.
•The previously unreleased Pixies 1991 live performance from Brixton, on both Blu-ray and DVD, mastered for 5.1 surround sound at 24/192 and 24/96, respectively.
•A 96-page fine art book, measuring 22" x 14", and an additional 54-page book, measuring 7.75" x 8.25"
•A 12" x 19.5" giclee print, and two double-sided fold-out posters measuring 48" x 36."
•Individually numbered and hand-signed by every member of the Pixies and Vaughan Oliver.
•25 random sets will include test pressings of the vinyl albums.
•Housed in an oversized clamshell case and limited to 3000 copies.

Re: Special Editions of new album
If we're talking a reissue of the classic Underworld catalogue, then absolutely, the Pixies set is the model. I'm not even a big Pixies fan and I want it. The package is also created in collaboration with the same design outfit who made those NIN things.

What I think Underworld should avoid is a Depeche Mode Sounds of the Universe situation. That release crossed over into silly and greedy.

That Pixies idea is great and all but its a big exploitation of their fans.. simply to break even on the sales of the cd... there is nothing respectful about it, simply the band selling their signatures and doing it in Gold too...

There should defo be special editions but be realistic and nice about it... it would be a huge change of character to turn around and charge copious amounts of cash for a video and some squiggle from Karl and Rick...

Music... just want music.. merci..

Re: Special Editions of new album
The cover art reminds me of those 80s posters people had: neon lights, white-faced chickies with sunglasses on, bright red lipstick.

It also looks a lot like every 10th image on ffffound.com.

Thankfully, I don't buy Underworld albums for the covers.

Re: Special Editions of new album
i saw the minotaur at the pixies exhibition recently - a very pushy saleswoman was trying to get me to invest. unfortunately, i agree that however nice it is (and it IS nice!) it's just not something for a regular fan - maybe for an investor, who may not even be bothered about the band at all.

(i'd rather spend £3k on a massive surfer rosa print!)

Yeah but UW are not nearly as popular as NIN..

Anyway as much as I love cool packaging I'm hoping they do more with the UWLive store. I liked the 020202 and Phonestrap releases but the tunes themselves were only okay. I'm glad that they are selling the old albums but I wonder why the hard-to-get B-sides aren't up there when they easily could be, especially when those B-sides are some of UW's best work. Likewise I'm sure there's a bunch of B-sides for this album that would be great to see online!!

That said i'll definitely be picking up a vinyl...

Re: Special Editions of new album
pretty sure an UW box set designed by them and the tomato camp would be the best thing i've ever seen in my life.
