A lot of it comes down to the mastering or cut which can have a huge impact on the final press.

Most of the cost in a box set will be in it's packaging - not everything goes up in value on the second hand market and sellers will sometimes have a surplus of titles (especially box sets which can take up a lot of space) they prefer to move on at nearer cost price rather than waiting for it to sell at full price. Of course some box sets will go up in value hugely, but there's no real science to predict what will or won't, but you can often make an educated guess as to what might increase in value.

thanks for that.

i've noticed with cd boxsets, most have stayed flat with their prices, compared to their original prices. now granted, i don't have the 'barbara barbara' one, which i will be getting. but i'm ok with whatever price its going for, because it was more limited.

some of those are overpriced. i wouldn't pay over $50 for the barbara barbara
one, because i can't stand that album. but will probably end up paying more
just to have it, and never play it.

someone paid over $200 for the original drift boxset, its not worth that much either.
i think i paid like $80 for it used.

but thats what collectors do.

Bloody hell, I'd love to have enough money to justify buying music I won't even play!

to be fair, i have everything legit, as digital files.

so that's why nowadays i don't bother opening up most of the
releases i buy. unless there's a book, booklet or something else
besides music in there.

With only 400 copies made, you'll pay a pretty penny if you want to own one.

Yes, well, it spiked for a while when it sold out in the distribution channel just a month or two after release, and there was no indication of any more physical product coming. Prices cratered after the affordable Complete box set was announced.

Re: collectors' corner
For a while those STITI and BF ones were hard to get. Maybe I should have waited. Still, I with the prices on the Barbara set would drop, that's the only one I'm missing.

Also - it's probably been said a million times but man oh man I can't wait for the Oblivion box set, especially if they bring in the RiverRun material.

Re: collectors' corner
A Hundred Days Off could be interesting.

I have the DVD case promo (somewhere) which had a lot of alternative artwork not in the official release. Some of the b sides released could also go there. The last proper album where b sides were a thing.

Re: collectors' corner
Yeah, it had far more b-sides than Beaucoup Fish.
Karl did mention the fact that a second Drift boxset might get in the way of the AHDO box, so it's definitely still on the radar. Probably be next year for the 20th anniversary, although I can't help thinking the pandemic would be a great time to go through the archives and put together a really good boxset.
