Dirty History
I was going through some of my old archives and stumbled upon messages I saved from the earliest incarnation of Dirty, the Dirtylist. These are all circa 1996. I'm just dumping this here in raw form so I'm not promising anything coherent; I just thought some of you might find it interesting to see what this community was like nearly 14 years ago.
First few messages here are all from Mr. Emerson. ------------------------------ From: Darren Emerson <d@spoonman.demon.co.uk> Date: Mon, 23 Sep 1996 03:46:45 +0000 Subject: Hello all...... I'm just writing this quickie to say that, I am around... I've just got a new computer and I'm having a few minor problems with it... But I am recieving my mail still... Hopefully I'll see you all at Big Love..... ------------------------------ From: Darren Emerson <d@spoonman.demon.co.uk> Date: Wed, 25 Sep 1996 00:03:09 +0000 Subject: === Martin (who saw Darren DJing at the Complex on Friday night, but who was less than blown away. Dave Angel was MILES better) ====================== he should have came last saturday.....i was back on form....that friday wasn't a good nite for me.. still we all have our ups and downs... now that Underworld has calmed down a little I can get back into some djin ------------------------------ From: Darren Emerson <d@spoonman.demon.co.uk> Date: Mon, 18 Nov 1996 09:39:11 +0000 Subject: top 10 here's a top 10 i done for mixmag recently: 1.Life's Little Pleasures...Ned Flanders...Underwater Records 2.Scenic Route.....Urban Groove......Parasols (Plink Plonk) 3.Bless The Funk....N.Y. Steve thinks it will do alot better this time and derseves a higher place in the chart. I was a bit dubious about it at first...but it is one of my faves...so sorry Duncan if you've got the hump about it ...tin there's on there though...also there's a remix of pearls girl that has been done and its great...so hopefully we'll try and get that out. ------------------------------ From: Darren Emerson <d@spoonman.demon.co.uk> Date: Thu, 10 Oct 1996 11:04:53 +0000 Subject: NME article about Big Love What a load of crap... I know that Ben Willmott doesn't like Underworld but theres no need to make up lies about the gig. Everyone that went to Big Love knows that it was a good nite and that people weren't having a bad time. it's not cool or credible to like a band that sells a lot of records ... typical old indie kid that discovers dance music...sad.. well got that off me chest ------------------------------ From: Darren Emerson <d@spoonman.demon.co.uk> Date: Fri, 11 Oct 1996 10:49:33 +0000 Subject: Re: NME article about Big Love >On Thu, 10 Oct 1996, Scott Warner wrote: >Damn, beat me to it. Funny thing happened the other day actually. You know that we got the name "Pearl's Girl" from a greyhound ...well,the owner of the dog rang us up the other day to say thank you for using the name.. She said that Pearl's Girl was very happy and that she has just had puppies. Which is even more weird because there is a track called "puppies" on the release....strange eh? ------------------------------ From: Darren Emerson <d@spoonman.demon.co.uk> Date: Tue, 15 Oct 1996 10:21:54 +0000 Subject: Re: Favorite Tracks... >When I got into high school, I went through that "80's alternative" stage, >put away my rap records, and listed a lot to the Smiths, the Cure, Bauhaus, >that sort of thing. Anything good in America is deemed to "rock," regardless of non-rock content. Although most American kids just prefer listen to traditional bang yo head rock. With is something that English music writers ALWAYS miss the point of. "Oh Americans won't understand this because he's bisexual." "Americans don't understand Pulp, they're too camp." Your average American kid couldn't give two shits wether an artist is gay, screws trees, fondles animals, writes songs about architecture, or solves the meaning of life in under fourty words. They just want to RAAWWWWWK. Which is probably why bands like Oasis, Radiohead, and errr, ummm Bush have done well over here, and bands like Blur, Pulp, and Suede have not. Personally, I'd throw all of that away for some "Cherry Pie." scott warner mbx719@west.net ------------------------------ From: ArgonTroix@aol.com Date: Sun, 27 Oct 1996 01:26:54 -0400 Subject: Re: Born slippy is cool Also having lived in the Euroland (okokokok--it was France, so SUE ME!) and most of my useless life in the US, I agree with BOTH lee & Scott on this little subject of Rawking In The U.S O' A. Anyway, I'm better again now, having listened to the first volume of Trade at no: 11 all the way in on the bus this morning (second disc, natch). Purism be damned, this is the way to banish the corporate demons after such a horrid experience. Smile back on face, spring back in step, sauce back in bottle. What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Daft Punk. Well, I was a bit jammy there, cos I stumbled across it at Sister Ray. They had 15 early vinyl copies and I just happened to walk past the shop when they had one left - no more than five hours after they'd got this secret batch. They were playing it at the time too, so I was even luckier. There is good news here and bad news. The good news is that I can assure you it's worth the wait. It's flipping gorgeous! The bad news is that you still won't be able to get your hands on it until January 20 (could be worse though - they were talking about a March release only a couple of weeks ago). Sorry to hear you're off - for a while at least. We didn't quite manage world peace, but dirtylist has got a lot more entertaining of late, and (pains me though it does to say this) you're one of the reasons why. Good luck Martin |

Thanks for posting this, Scott! My dirtylist archives are on an old hard drive that I've misplaced at the moment. Fun to reread this stuff!
