Dirty History
I was going through some of my old archives and stumbled upon messages I saved from the earliest incarnation of Dirty, the Dirtylist. These are all circa 1996. I'm just dumping this here in raw form so I'm not promising anything coherent; I just thought some of you might find it interesting to see what this community was like nearly 14 years ago.

First few messages here are all from Mr. Emerson.

welll...the reason why Pearls Girl is being re-released is because we think
it's a strong track.
Steve thinks it will do alot better this time and derseves a higher place
in the chart.
I was a bit dubious about it at first...but it is one of my faves...so
sorry Duncan if you've got the hump about it ...tin there's on there
though...also there's a remix of pearls girl that has been done and its
great...so hopefully we'll try and get that out.

What a load of crap...
I know that Ben Willmott doesn't like Underworld but theres no need to make
up lies about the gig.
Everyone that went to Big Love knows that it was a good nite and that
people weren't having a bad time.

it's not cool or credible to like a band that sells a lot of records ...
typical old indie kid that discovers dance music...sad..

well got that off me chest

well...juanita is a bloody long track....we all love it ,but how do you do
an edit on the track and not lose the vibe on it..??

it's hard sometimes ...but i think Pearl's girl is one of me faves anyway.

Funny thing happened the other day actually. You know that we got the name
"Pearl's Girl" from a greyhound ...well,the owner of the dog rang us up the
other day to say thank you for using the name..

She said that Pearl's Girl was very happy and that she has just had puppies.
Which is even more weird because there is a track called "puppies" on the
release....strange eh?

well basically...i was djin alot.I was working with Rick and Karl
too. They came up with some tunes that needed some of my input.
ie.giving my opinion and making them more dance.
so this is why I produced more of the first album.

the second album,we all worked in our own studios and
i wrote more on the second album as well as producing.

so i hope that answers your questions.

Yes, it certainly is. Anything good in America is deemed to "rock,"
regardless of non-rock content.

Although most American kids just prefer listen to traditional bang yo head
rock. With is something that English music writers ALWAYS miss the point
of. "Oh Americans won't understand this because he's bisexual." "Americans
don't understand Pulp, they're too camp."

Your average American kid couldn't give two shits wether an artist is gay,
screws trees, fondles animals, writes songs about architecture, or solves
the meaning of life in under fourty words. They just want to RAAWWWWWK.
Which is probably why bands like Oasis, Radiohead, and errr, ummm Bush
have done well over here, and bands like Blur, Pulp, and Suede have not.

Personally, I'd throw all of that away for some "Cherry Pie."

erm...something most distinctly non-tshirt appearing. you know, typical
front center small fraction of the shirt image, turnaround to back center
half the shirt image.

and maybe a little stringent on the colours...tomato of late has gotten a
bit questionable when they get lenient with the color palette (see the
asian motif of pearls girl yecccch)

After giving more thought to the t-shirt deal, I think it should be
something relatively simple. I like the idea of somebody's back there
to have the t-shirt that's not a t-shirt, but as far as what's on it...
maybe something like the "Born Slippy" shirts.

You know, on the front it could be like "underw orld dirt ylist."

The back of the shirt might have something in the way of artwork a little
more extensive?

How about good quotes from people on the list? Mmmm...like :

"we're not trying to establish world peace!!"

- Duncan

"where the hell is my mail goin?"

- Lee (well, okay, he didn't say that.)

"you're a fucking fruitcake!"

- Darren

Well, maybe those weren't so good but you get the idea.

because i) paninaro is synonymous to preppy in northern italy.
actually it comes from the panini sandwiches refering to rich
spoilt kids who hung around panini bars with nothing better
to do, until they started studying at Bocconi or wherever. I think
i-D used to do articles on that... when Milan was big and happening.
AND ii) the pet shop boys (and couple of italo-disco club anthems)
penned a tune named paninaro 7-8 years ago.

Two things to say to Monkey Boy (or whatever his name is):

1. Don't say "not to be anal", when it's as clear as the sweat droplets on

2. Keep it up fella! Winding up dirtylisters is as easy as shooting monkeys
in a monkey barrel, but enjoyable for all that.

Two things to say to everyone:

1. Go and buy Daft Punk's Homework as soon as you can. It's the monkey's
nuts (easy big fella...)

2. Merry Christmas, you mad muthas

Sorry about the delay in replying to your Daft Punk question Duncan - I have
only just recovered from a truly horrible Christmas party at Planet
Hollywood, which sapped my spirit so effectively that I swear I saw Delilah
outside singing 'Why Why Why, Sylvester' (da da da da da da da da *da*).
Anyway, I'm better again now, having listened to the first volume of Trade
at no: 11 all the way in on the bus this morning (second disc, natch).
Purism be damned, this is the way to banish the corporate demons after such
a horrid experience. Smile back on face, spring back in step, sauce back in
bottle.

What was I talking about? Oh yeah, Daft Punk. Well, I was a bit jammy there,
cos I stumbled across it at Sister Ray. They had 15 early vinyl copies and I
just happened to walk past the shop when they had one left - no more than
five hours after they'd got this secret batch. They were playing it at the
time too, so I was even luckier. There is good news here and bad news. The
good news is that I can assure you it's worth the wait. It's flipping
gorgeous! The bad news is that you still won't be able to get your hands on
it until January 20 (could be worse though - they were talking about a March
release only a couple of weeks ago).

Sorry to hear you're off - for a while at least. We didn't quite manage
world peace, but dirtylist has got a lot more entertaining of late, and
(pains me though it does to say this) you're one of the reasons why.

Good luck
