Drift Ep. 2, Part 5 - Soniamode
This week's real Drift release. I like when we hear directly from the boys:
This is Soniamode. A voice chants with the innocent menace of a 50’s playground rhyme, carried along by the tumbling celebration of a brass band playing Glitch as it hot steps through the streets of New Orleans. “Louisiana on my honeymoon in 1987. April Fools’ day in Essex 2015. Last Sunday in my studio. Last Monday Karl in his studio. Tuesday morning in my studio. Tuesday afternoon uploaded the track. Is this one finished…? No but it’s coming out anyway... I wonder if Sons Of Kemet would collaborate on a version with us? Have you ever watched Treme?” - Rick |

Re: Drift Ep. 2, Part 5 - Soniamode
Whoa! Such a mix of sounds ( and inspirations/sources, per the release notes), this sounds familiar, but hard to place. First listen gave me an 80's new wave vibe, not sure why, something about Karl's intonation. Next plays, picked up other elements... The jazzy piano, the more realistic brass amongst the distorted lead line, the fun bouncy beat.
I have a mind to remix this with a big beat...in my head, punchier drums would make this track a monster. Really interesting new directions on all of the EP. 2 tracks!

Damn! What a banger!!
I hear MK1 in here too, particularly in Karl’s singing. Also the whistle in the middle. Hui. I have only really listened to Underneath the Radar and did quite liked it. There is some familiarity there, but that may also just assosiative. Looked up Sons of Kemet and by god make that happen. |

Re: Drift Ep. 2, Part 5 - Soniamode
But is it, dubman? It's hot, it's messy, but after 15 listens, it's cohesive.
At this point, I don't believe that Rick can release something embarrassingly undone. Sure, there's room for revision, but in the Drift context, we are hearing how R & K wish to extend. It's frankly been a joyful voyage for me. A new track each week, some amazing, some bizarre, all appreciated! At some point in the Drift, we can collate our favorites. For me, anyway, as if now, they're all melding into the UW Canon. P.s. dubman, sorry, I just read your heartfelt missive on the Drift wishes thread. I feel like we need to chat for an hour+ over a beer and Underworld to get on common ground. But I see where you're coming from. For me, despite mixed opinions of post 2002 albums, UW have never let me down, so maybe I'm biased.
