Re: Underworld Live - Nottingham Rock City 14th Oct 2007
I decided to sneak away from my girlfriend's house a little early this weekend and take a little detour to the murder capital of Britain on my way home...
Another great gig, the much smaller stage gave things a very claustrophobic feel, which the band capitalised on with a very heavy lights out, smoke machines on, strobes set to stun version of Moaner moved much further up the setlist than normal, and the welcome reappearence of Push Upstairs, which didn't get an outing at either of the other 2 gigs I saw.
The harsh gritty feel of things meant little experimentation (so no Bamboo or You Do Scribble) and lots of chunky kickdrum throughout - the classic tracks thumped well, getting a less UW-obsessed than usual crowd on side (no cheering at all for the name on the Asteroids high score?), UW grabbed the crowd and made them dance hard, with a long wait before the euphoria of the .nuxx chords and a final Jumbo.
Mo Move was particularly hard-edged, but it felt a little uninspired, and I think Karl lost his way a little in King of Snake, the "?" in the tracklist above was 'Glam Bucket', no rocking out this time, but lots of growly feedback, in keeping with the whole night. There was an unexpected moment of hilarity whe Karl came in 16 bars early with the vocals on TMO, with the whole crowd pointing and doing a Nelson from the Simpsons 'ha-ha', but that san Karl's sheepishness really served to break the ice.
All in all, another great show... but maybe not quite as great as Birmingham or Norwich?
No live CD set on sale on the night (and no large t-shirts either, come to mention it), but I did spot a man in a liveherenow t-shirt in the sound booth pressing record on a CD-r machine just before the start of the show, so maybe things are possible in the future?
