NIN is leading the way with this kind of stuff for the independent artist. The music itself is essentially free, so give us something precious like a beautiful physical package or multi-tracks or a book. Underworld have cultivated a fanbase of aesthetically-minded creative types and we would eat something like this up.
It's also, I suspect, a license to print money. Here is the most expensive NIN package, priced at US$300. They limited production to 2,500 and they sold every single one of them. That's US$750,000 before expenses. That's astonishing. I've no doubt Underworld could do something similar. |
Yeah but UW are not nearly as popular as NIN..
Anyway as much as I love cool packaging I'm hoping they do more with the UWLive store. I liked the 020202 and Phonestrap releases but the tunes themselves were only okay. I'm glad that they are selling the old albums but I wonder why the hard-to-get B-sides aren't up there when they easily could be, especially when those B-sides are some of UW's best work. Likewise I'm sure there's a bunch of B-sides for this album that would be great to see online!!
That said i'll definitely be picking up a vinyl...
