i'm trying, i'm trying.

i love the borat character on the ali g show and would love for the movie to be funny. it's just that on the show, the humor lies in borat interacting with unknowing subjects who take what he says at face value and don't realize he's winding them up. the things borat says are very funny, but mostly in the context of there being someone there who's trying to take him seriously. in the trailer, it seemed the humor was supposed to lie solely on what borat was saying, and it doesn't work for me without the key element of the dupe.

i haven't given up on the movie yet, just saying the trailer lessened my enthusiasm.

Riko nailed it; very much like Tom Green's Freddy Got Fingered:

A situation that was funny on the show (for instance, him acting like a total jackass in a real bank) worked because it was real life...and a similar scene recreated with actors on a set was totally pointless.

It could work; the Borat character is funny, but if they just try and re-create the show's humour, it won't work. It needs to be something else entirely, and they may not recognize that.

they've apparently been screening this on the 3rd street promenade in santa monica, although i haven't been blessed with a pre-screening myself.

if you do resarch on this, you'll see that most people who have seen it cannot effectively put in to words how insanely hilarious it apparently is. subsequently i have very high hopes, but still waiting for the damn thing to come out!

I agree totally that the comic mechanism is very similar to what Tom Green used to do. Although, from my standpoint, I could tell immediately from the trailer of Freddy Got Fingered that it was not going to be good. I actually like what I've seen so far from Borat. Also I wouldn't rule out that there are still real people used in the movie. Not many people know about his character, so they may have used that as an oppurtunity to make this film.
Anyway, I'm seein' it when it comes out.
Wa wa wee wa!

Re: Borat - what more can I say?

after seeing the trailer the first time i was a bit let down. i strongly agree with everyone above about the mechanics of the ali g, borat, bruno comedy works. but the trailer simply shows him about to go to america. the whole thing is supposed to be his interactions with americans.. so really it feels the trailer simply sets up the movie, without giving any of the good substance away. which, really, is what a proper trailer should do.
