Re: Underworld Live - Nottingham Rock City 14th Oct 2007
I decided to sneak away from my girlfriend's house a little early this weekend and take a little detour to the murder capital of Britain on my way home...
Another great gig, the much smaller stage gave things a very claustrophobic feel, which the band capitalised on with a very heavy lights out, smoke machines on, strobes set to stun version of Moaner moved much further up the setlist than normal, and the welcome reappearence of Push Upstairs, which didn't get an outing at either of the other 2 gigs I saw. The harsh gritty feel of things meant little experimentation (so no Bamboo or You Do Scribble) and lots of chunky kickdrum throughout - the classic tracks thumped well, getting a less UW-obsessed than usual crowd on side (no cheering at all for the name on the Asteroids high score?), UW grabbed the crowd and made them dance hard, with a long wait before the euphoria of the .nuxx chords and a final Jumbo. Mo Move was particularly hard-edged, but it felt a little uninspired, and I think Karl lost his way a little in King of Snake, the "?" in the tracklist above was 'Glam Bucket', no rocking out this time, but lots of growly feedback, in keeping with the whole night. There was an unexpected moment of hilarity whe Karl came in 16 bars early with the vocals on TMO, with the whole crowd pointing and doing a Nelson from the Simpsons 'ha-ha', but that san Karl's sheepishness really served to break the ice. All in all, another great show... but maybe not quite as great as Birmingham or Norwich? No live CD set on sale on the night (and no large t-shirts either, come to mention it), but I did spot a man in a liveherenow t-shirt in the sound booth pressing record on a CD-r machine just before the start of the show, so maybe things are possible in the future? |

Re: Underworld Live - Nottingham Rock City 14th Oct 2007
ok, slightly longer review this time...
we got there. i happened to be slightly drunk. we'd just come from a student pub in town where double vodka redbulls were £2. so, as you can imagine, i decided to get lashed up before we got there. so yea, we entered the place, and there was this dub music playing, which is coolio cos i love the dub. i remember some mikey dread at the controls being played, and junior murvin....anyway, we got a 4 pack of red stripe, and wondered down to the middle of the dancefloor. karl, darren and rick immediately came out, loads of cheering...karl wearing his sequined jacket...karl does a monologue, very artsy, ending in "nottingham, are you ready to go mental?" or something quite similar...anyway, immediately after that, "everythingeverythingeverything" kicks off, which immediately seques into rez, which bangs around...can't believe that choon is now 16 years old....and then cowgirl comes in. much raving. next up is new track crocodile, which karl gets his guitar out for...not as great live as i had hoped, but still pretty cool. crocodile chills out for a bit, and then BANG BANG BANG goes this spaz guitar, meaning shudder/kkkkking of snake! the crowd are getting seriously worked up on this one, as more and more stuff comes in, harder drums, piano stuff, karl's vocals...yea, they weren't brilliant and sharp on this one, but this is a shouty choon and karl's latest vox are more introspective, maybe... the snake dies, and then moaner moaner moaner! this really got everyone ballistic, as usual....i was amazed that they played this so early, but it worked. :D karl's vocals were perfectly timed on this. then i think it was the cut up vox from dark train, which led into beautiful burnout....that was very chilled, i went to the bar for some more bevvies by this stage...then the new track, which i wasn't overly impressed with either, but people always dance more when they know the song. which reminds me...mo move came on next, and it was a harder version than i remember from 2002, with no vocals or arpeggi synth that i can remember, just lots of bongos, bd and loads of bassline...it was dark, like dino adventure style dark... then another ahdo classic, two months off! everyone knew this fucker. the roadies came out and inflated these massive condoms too, which was surreal, but worked well...that was a great moment, the visuals were switched off for this i think....forgot to mention visuals so far, lots of camera shots of the audience and karl's head, spliced with tomato stock...good stuff. lights were impressive too. but then, the moment that all the half-fans had been waiting for, DRIVE BOY etc as everyone shouted along to whatever bits they knew...they didn't do the 2003 piano bit, probably cos no one would have known what it was....when dealing with half-fans, stick to classic stuff like what the prodigy does, and when dealing with the 'ardcore, mash it up! big surprise was push upstairs, which sounded mint! although i would have preferred spikee or something, but most people there knew push upstairs. to end the set, they played probably my favourite u/w song, pearls girl....the drums were driving, but i think they could have jammed on the ending a bit more...it was a bit cut short, and i thought that about the 2002 gig i went to as well.... encore, encore, we chanted. and then, they came back out, "i've caught beaucoup fish..." vox sample, and then the blissed out lovelyness of jumbo. they could have ended on a harder one to get everyone psyched out, but jumbo seemed pretty perfect. all in all, amazing! still buzzing! bring on the next 5 year gap! |

Karl @ UWlive:
"Nottingham - what a truly amazing vibe! Transforming a day through your energy & enthusiasm - pumping adrenaline straight into the groove. You raised the roof & sent us back out on the road tingling & grinning. Thanks to Errors for another brilliant show. You go from strength-to-strength. Newsh's mate hits the myspace charts" |
Re: Underworld Live - Nottingham Rock City 14th Oct 2007
Rock City rocked. I agree that Birmingham probably had the edge in terms of the music but I thought the crowd in Nottingham were slighty more up for a good time. The overall experience crowd, lights, Music blew me away.(just one thing negative about the crowd. Why do one or two people neglect to wash or spray when they know they are going to get up close and personal? It just rude.)
How do you guys remember so many details? All I recall is something about cranberry juice and Van Morrison then just lights, rhythm and a strong aroma of sweat which at times was overpowered by amyl Nitrate(Not mine) I'm glad no one mentioned dirty epic cos listening to my other half I'm not sure he was at the same gig. He said they definately did it and everyone in the audience was singing along. I know I had a few three, two, one back in the room moments but I was seriously considering a life of yoga and herbal tea thinking too many brain cell have been lost for ever. However from your accounts It Jackass who need to get in the lotus position and sort out his head. All good. I'm left wanting more. |

I see they're still calling it Biro, and not Burnout. And i wonder how close we came to Mo Move in Glasgow instead of You Do Scribble - dancing kind of tailed off in some parts. (Sorry... back to Nottingham.) |
Re: Underworld Live - Nottingham Rock City 14th Oct 2007
what book?
is it that ... well - I guess it's sort of a tour program? [I bought it in LA] or something different? |

Re: Underworld Live - Nottingham Rock City 14th Oct 2007
This was the best i've seen underworld since emerson left, i always thought they were better live as a 3 piece as it gives karl the freedom of the stage. it just rocked from the opening rez/cowgirl right the way through. As my kid said to me right after the finish dripping with sweat
" that went right off! absolutely bangin' ". we all thought it was a fuckin top night out and the new tracks were amazing!:D |
Re: Underworld Live - Nottingham Rock City 14th Oct 2007
Gotta agree with Rog, it was such an amazing atmosphere and the set was almost perfect for me. I have seen em a few times before but not on the form they were on that night!
They better bring a live CD out for Nottingham, that set was perfect! |

This was a truely amazing gig. Travelled all the way back from Spain to see them (via John Digweed in Manchester) It was the second time I have seen Underworld this year and I thought they were spot on!
I know what you mean about body odour though - I got a few whiffs in my direction... not what you need half way through Jumbo! Can't believe how "up for it" the crowd were on a school night as well. Brilliant. |
