Re: Borat - what more can I say?

i'm trying, i'm trying.

i love the borat character on the ali g show and would love for the movie to be funny. it's just that on the show, the humor lies in borat interacting with unknowing subjects who take what he says at face value and don't realize he's winding them up. the things borat says are very funny, but mostly in the context of there being someone there who's trying to take him seriously. in the trailer, it seemed the humor was supposed to lie solely on what borat was saying, and it doesn't work for me without the key element of the dupe.

i haven't given up on the movie yet, just saying the trailer lessened my enthusiasm.

Re: Borat - what more can I say?

Riko nailed it; very much like Tom Green's Freddy Got Fingered:

A situation that was funny on the show (for instance, him acting like a total jackass in a real bank) worked because it was real life...and a similar scene recreated with actors on a set was totally pointless.

It could work; the Borat character is funny, but if they just try and re-create the show's humour, it won't work. It needs to be something else entirely, and they may not recognize that.

they've apparently been screening this on the 3rd street promenade in santa monica, although i haven't been blessed with a pre-screening myself.

if you do resarch on this, you'll see that most people who have seen it cannot effectively put in to words how insanely hilarious it apparently is. subsequently i have very high hopes, but still waiting for the damn thing to come out!

Re: Borat - what more can I say?

I agree totally that the comic mechanism is very similar to what Tom Green used to do. Although, from my standpoint, I could tell immediately from the trailer of Freddy Got Fingered that it was not going to be good. I actually like what I've seen so far from Borat. Also I wouldn't rule out that there are still real people used in the movie. Not many people know about his character, so they may have used that as an oppurtunity to make this film.
Anyway, I'm seein' it when it comes out.
Wa wa wee wa!

Re: Borat - what more can I say?

after seeing the trailer the first time i was a bit let down. i strongly agree with everyone above about the mechanics of the ali g, borat, bruno comedy works. but the trailer simply shows him about to go to america. the whole thing is supposed to be his interactions with americans.. so really it feels the trailer simply sets up the movie, without giving any of the good substance away. which, really, is what a proper trailer should do.

Re: Borat - what more can I say?

having seen two 5-minute clips at Comic-Con a few weeks ago, i think this may turn out to be one of teh funniest movies EVER.
one clip in particular had the audience screaming with laughter. i was crying so hard, as was the group of friends i was with. afterwards, we couldn't stop giggling at what we'd just witnessed. seriously, you have no idea how far this guy goes for a laugh.

A few friends went to a screening of this and LOVED it. Among other things, they said they were surprised he made it out alive of some of these places. He obviously has no regard for his own well-being.

There's gonna be another screening and they're gonna go again...I'll report back if I'm lucky enough to go with 'em.

Re: Borat - what more can I say?

my brother saw this at a screening in Toronto's film festival... he said it was insane, the audience was howling with laughter and he was in tears. i think there was a standing ovation too, ppl are actually calling "borat" a masterpiece.

right now the movie has a staggering 9.4 average score on imdb. granted it has only 500 votes so far, but if it keeps going like this after 5000 votes it'd be the highest rated movie in imdb, taking down godfather and shawshank.

which in itself would be pretty funny :)

Re: Borat - what more can I say?

apparently it didn't go down flawlessly either:

"Sasha Baron Cohen was booed by audiences at the Toronto Film Festival on Thursday night after a film projector broke 30 minutes into his new film Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. British funnyman Cohen attempted to calm the crowd by going onstage as his character Borat, saying, "If you don't give these people money back, I crush you!" But the audience were furious after the screening was cancelled following an hour of waiting for the projector to be fixed and continued to boo the star. One audience member said, "It was complete madness."

this was obviously an earlier screening than the one my brother attended yesterday.

From http://www.cinematical.com/2006/09/1...loves-myspace/ :

Quote:

One of the Toronto International Film Festival's most buzzed-about films will be hitting the internet next Wednesday, but only for those who are members of the MySpace community. As part of the site's brand new Black Carpet screening series, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (which has to be one of the longest, most absurd titles in the history of film) will be made available to folks in 20 U.S. cities, as well as Canada, Germany, Ireland, the U.K. and Australia.

The film, which follows Sacha Baron Cohen's fictional anti-semitic Borat character around the United States while he stumbles over his words and pisses everyone off, has come under fire as of late from the very real government of Kazakhstan who feel the pic and the character are, well, not a very fair representation of their country. While that may be true, audiences everywhere are eating up Cohen's shtick and by screening it on MySpace, the word of mouth could provide Borat with some decent box office numbers once it finally hits theaters on November 3.
Was expecting to have to wait till November for this, but I know where I'll be on Wednesday :)
