kung fu hustle
don't know if this is out in the states yet, but don't miss it
fantastic martial arts spoof/black comedy with some superb effects and some very, very funny laugh out loud bits and when i say martial arts comedy i don't mean like rush hour ;) |
Re: kung fu hustle
its great, but it seemed like its too reliant on special effects at times. like towards the end and when the main character was chased by the landord lady. i loved it but shaolin soccer is way funnier for me

Re: kung fu hustle
I thought this was hilarious, but I agree about the chase scene being really tedious. I even laughed at cliched bits that I would usually cringe at, e.g. the scene where Sing tries to prove he can kill someone.
I still haven't seen Shaolin Soccer! |
Re: kung fu hustle
Man, I loved it! I thought the chase scene was really clever because it makes fun of the car chases you see in every other movie. The guy using the knives in his shoulders as rearview mirrors and stuff. Great, great movie. :D

Re: kung fu hustle
I thought it was a totally amazing movie. It's so over the top that it comes back around and becomes subtle and clever. I've never seen anything quite like it.

Re: kung fu hustle
Really? I thought the preview looked corny. Guess I'll have to check it out.

Re: kung fu hustle
it's not universally loved (ahem) but if you liked Shaolin Soccer you should like it...

Re: kung fu hustle
I've heard it's good and been urged to see it, but I really have no interest in seeing it.
I just kind of shrug my shoulders and say, "Meh...", when someone mentions it. |

I too am a fan.

Re: kung fu hustle
I have yet to see it.
I don't really go see comedies at the theater though. I am more of a drama, or sci-fi/action type of person. I wait until DVD for most comedies, and even then I only see them, if they are recommended. I am just not a big comedy fan. Especially, stupid Adam Sandler type comedies. (not saying that Kung Fu Hustle is like this, that was just an example) |
Re: kung fu hustle
i thought it was great... magical and everything... i know it doesn't compete on the same mystic as croutching tiger etc. but it does feel like it could... it is a great co medy, great fighting... everything!

Re: kung fu hustle
The trouble with trying to recommend this movie is that, like I said, there aren't really other movies like this to compare it to. Shaolin Soccer is probably the closest thing, but this movie is a lot different, and a lot better. Totally worth seeing on the big screen.

Re: kung fu hustle
the original Hong Kong title was just Gong Fu (or Kung Fu). Stephen Chow's comments about the english title was "what exactly does "Hustle" mean?" since the title made it seem like the movie was more about hustling. which it isnt. the original title fits better since it's essentially an homage to old kung fu flicks (it would be the equivalent of Tarantino making a movie and titling it "Exploitation").
i cant find the link anymore, but there was a site with very detailed bios of the cast/crew, and half of them are a who's who of long forgotten legends of kung fu cinema (some even before Bruce Lee). for example, The Beast was one of the top martial arts stars during Bruce Lee's prime, but hasnt worked on any movies since the early 80's when he got blacklisted in HK. and this was his first movie since then, and the first one where he plays a bad guy. |
