Drop #6: Juanita limited drop, 27/5

Just announced. Very stoked. Have bought all the 12"s so far and none have disappointed.

What would you all hope for? Live version from Everything Everything on the A side and an unreleased demo on the B side?

-----------------------

This collection ships mid June 2022.

LIMITED PRODUCTS AVAILABLE

Some music is just eternal. It is unshakable and divine, as if it’s been written on hidden chords or carved from a different rock to everything else. Maybe it’s not in your ears or on your mind all the time - imagine a much-loved old friend whose number has slipped off speed dial - but it’s part of your personal algorithm, swirled in your blood, coiled ready to send an electric prickle up the back of the neck once its story unfolds over you again.

Juanita is one of those tracks. Progressive in the very best way (in that it moves things forward) Juanita is solid proof that music shouldn’t need to be boring or formulaic. Music could all be like this. Just press play again and welcome the drift.

Named after much-loved Tomato mainstay and voice of Two Months Off Juanita Boxill, the track was the opener that Second Toughest In The Infants needed. As the way into Underworld’s second album, it had a mighty point to prove. Dubnobasswithmyheadman had effortlessly fused disparate musical worlds together into one unique whole. The band’s second album had to go deeper and turn curiosity into fixation. And Juanita (or, Juanita: Kiteless: To Dream Of Love to give the triptych its full title) was custom built to do just that.

A sixteen and a half minute mind bend in real time; a plunge point to take you deep inside the machine, Juanita takes the same journey each time it’s played… and yet… each time, the focus seems to change, leading you down on a different route. Pounding metronomic techno and robot beat poetry gives way to a shower of piano notes that cascade around you before a Reichian ambience melts everything into white and green and red and red and black and red and white and grey and silver and green and grey and black. Listen again and it might be driven by a snarling guitar, a reversed rhythm and a disconnected elegy.

This drop offers two new versions of Juanita on one piece of vinyl.

The first is an evolution. A twelve minute-plus contemporary collage, it turns the whole thing on its head by taking pieces from Juanita past and present to create a series of new routes through the heart of the track. It adds both new vocals and parts recorded at the time but unused until now along with recordings of the track’s eponymous muse used as part of Underworld live shows in the ’90s. Further proof that music is never finished, this is Juanita eternal as ever, ready for her shining future.

The second version is the Everything, Everything live recording pressed onto vinyl for the first time - a snapshot of Underworld on the massive 1999 Beaucoup Fish world tour that saw them headline Fuji Rock and grace the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury.

Yes, well said Carpy, my friend.
A side - Everything Everything version, B side - Demo or new reprogrammed, revitalised piece compared to winter drop - Dark and Long (Drift 2 Dark Train), which is like great version on my vinyl, so maybe Juanita will get new treatment too. And thats great, because new version - Drift 2 Dark Train works and its my fave in these Drops. lets see, but overall Juanita is one of my absolute favourites. And the vinyl from 96 is nice -Rowla - Juanita combo, so maybe Rowla is on too? But thats pure speculation.

The email says Juanita 2022, which suggests to me a new recording/remake.

It'll be hard to improve on the original. Still will be interesting to see what they've done with it!

Yeah, I'll be in line for this release. I don't buy too much vinyl but I did manage to get the Two Months Off vinyl drop for the extras! We'll see that comes along with the Juanita drop, but definitely hoping to hear some kind of change up even it's just some minor blips and bleeps...

Sounds like it might be like a studio version of the late 90s live versions, like everything everything

edit: if this is true, i'm gonna take several days off work in celebration

We've been discussing this in the Born Dirty chat, but based on some of the stuff heard in the samples released so far, it does sound like a 90's live version, but like, an actual live concert version, cause you can hear audience noise at the end of the sample clip released today.

I can't help but Kar'l vocals in this second Instagram snippet (supposedly Juanita 2022) sounds very much the EE version ...

It's here! I'm certain they're the vocals from EE

I really like it. The EE version of Kiteless is my second favourite UW song so I was always gonna like it but once it got to the guitar my soul ascended.

and the actual EE version still plays half of cups, but at least it fades out now lol

Bit of a rip off five pounds & ninety nine pence for two downloads on itunes!!! How do they work that out? And you have to buy both, personally I wouldnt want the live version but how can they justify three pounds per track when the most everyone else charges is ninety nine pence?

Well if your happy to pay three pounds for one 'DOWNLOAD' then thats what you'll 'ALWAYS' end up paying for them...

It's over 10 pounds on Qobuz!!! And if you wanna buy just a single track, like just Juanita 2022 on its own, it's 16 pounds for a single track!!! WTF

I'm sorry, I love UW, but this pricing is absurd. 2 tracks should not be 10 pounds. 5 pounds for Apple lossy is pushing it. I could see lossless/hi-res being 5 pounds, but, still, it's only 2 songs.

And lord forbid, they just post it on their Bandcamp and set the price. I don't know who is figuring out these prices for them, but that is insane.

Re: Juanita drop, 27/5

UPDATE
I tried PMing Underworld on Instagram asking about pricing and showing some examples. They responded and said that those digital prices are definitely not right and are looking into it to fix. They escalated it on their side and hope to fix it soon. They were surprisingly quick to respond. I was like, "Hey I'm not trying to be a d--k, but..." lol

Something like this happened with The Chemical Brothers and sadly was never fixed. They reissued a bunch of their singles/ EPs digital a couple of years. The prices were all over the place. A 3 track EP was 8 pounds, a 7 track EP was 14 pounds.

I noticed that Juanita 2022 is attached to UMC aka Universal Music and so were those Chemical Brother EP reissues. It seems UMC have some screwed up pricing practices.

Dark & Long 3 was also priced high on Qobuz. 8 pounds for the 3 track release in lossless, 14 pounds for individual tracks off it.

Does the tracklisting on the back of the sweatshirt suggest that gig is getting a download release?
I haven't bought anything this time round... hate missing out but there's only so many Underworld hoodies/sweats a guy can have...

The 2022 version is very interesting. It has crowd noise but doesn't sound entirely like the version played in 2017 when I saw them at Alexandra Palace.

So I think it's a remix of the Everything Everything version with new vocals recorded for it.

Well it should get released properly. Imagine a lovely vinyl boxset. Oh yes oh yes!
Is Juanita 2022 similar to Juanita live in Tokyo 2005?

If it does get a digital release, of course it would be not long after I buy the CD on discogs to get my own high quality audio :/

I bought quite a bit this time. I'll make space :D ;)

I really don't understand them having a Bandcamp and then not using it for all these recent drops. It'd be great to have the whole collection there in one place.

Really enjoying this new version, anyway. A really nice development of the piece that still retains a lot of the original's magic.

edit: just got an email from their Bandcamp page... with a link to the official site. Baffling.

It's not just the download prices that are high, 25 quid for 12" is pretty much twice what most people charge.

As I understand it, you're right, UMC is responsible for all the digital distribution, including the pricing. I am not hopeful that it will be adjusted. The previous drops also had wonky digital pricing, and those were never changed.

On the bright side, U.S. retailers always had regular pricing for those drops ($1 for lossy tracks, $2 for lossless tracks). On the downside, Juanita 2022 seems to have not been released in the U.S. I hope that's just an oversight.

So, I was told that UW needed to renegotiate their distribution agreement with UMG in order to be able to post their own digital releases through Bandcamp. I haven't asked about it, but given that they haven't used Bandcamp in over 2 years I'd say that probably means that they weren't able to do that.

I don't think so. They seem to be doing a retrospective riff on the Live in Tokyo release in the run-up to the Japan gigs in July. The promos for those gigs had the same aesthetic.

Found this really weird. I kept thinking I?d found the live version of the track. Very rarely am I?m underwhelmed - but this time sadly I am. It just felt really strange to have a half live version; totally distracting.

I order a ton of vinyl from the UK.

I dont see any issues with the price for a limited vinyl release,
and for shipping to the US.

Maybe it was cheaper before, but I have only started buying from
the shop in the last year or discogs, so there is no discrepancy from me.

I usually wait a year or two before buying, but instead of playing catch up for once, I just get them when they come out now.

You should see the prices on some of the older vinyl releases.
especially the rarer ones.

Yeah, I agree with neg1. You're not buying a standard 12" - it's a limited edition with two 10+ min tracks which have never been released on vinyl before, so the price doesn't seem too high in my opinion.

Take a look at the prices on Discogs.com for the earlier "limited drop" 12"s. Very glad I bought the Dark & Long and Rez ones at the time!

It's $52.17 to buy and ship this 12" to the US.

For the Baby Wants to Ride 12", I paid $21.47 shipped.
For the Long Slow Slippy 12", I paid $23.67 shipped.

Both of those were more limited than this one.

I dunno, compared to, say, 25 quid for a completely new album on limited edition numbered vinyl, it's not exactly cheap.

i'm not sure what the courier costs are nowadays compared to last year.

i know prices have gone up in the UK, and also there's a lot of
issues even in other countries shipping globably.

the best thing to to do is buy multiple items, because the
shipping doesn't change too much.

i ordered the puzzle and probably could have added a few shirts,
and the shipping would have been the same.

same thing happened on the new order store, bought a whole bunch
of items, but the shipping stayed at the same price.
