ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live jam
https://www.mixcloud.com/UnderworldLive/atl080328/
A transmission from the beating heart of an Underworld show in Atlanta 2008, recorded direct off Rick’s mixer, putting you up on stage between Rick and Karl live at Center Stage Theatre. Three tracks, live jammed and interwoven – Born Slippy (original version, not Nuxx), Pearls Girl (Crazy deconstruction) and Beautiful Burnout. “Hey Atlanta! First time was in ‘86, outside the venue I bought a tie-dye from a DeadHead driving his Beetle across America (was that you?). In the 90’s I walked out on stage and said “It’s great to be back in Chicago†– Damn! – were you there? (Thank you for not kicking me out!). In 2008 we played Center Stage – (somebody said Elton John rehearsed there..?) We had a rubbish soundcheck but a great gig. I talked to a bunch of guys in the afternoon who were engaging, warm and enthusiastic (was that you?) – What do you remember? What’s your story? Atlanta?†(Karl)

this jam is a beast! it's loud and clear, and each track segues into one another very precisely. the deconstruction of Pearls Girl into Beautiful Burnout sounds pretty awesome. definitely a great recording that captures the band's live magic of this era :D

Can someone grab this audio for me? I’m traveling for the next two weeks and my connection is terrible. I was at this show and would love to hear it when I get the chance to.

I wish they would release all of this stuff. I don't like being stuck listening to Mixcloud, Soundcloud, and YouTube and it sucks being stuck with low bitrate lossy rips. I hope they have plans for this stuff in proper quality.

Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
I wish I could understand why Underworld changed the nature of their live show. This recording is plainly stronger than anything they've done live in the last, what, ten years? If it's a creative choice, I'd love to hear the thinking behind it.
EDIT: previous phrasing was unnecessarily harsh. |
Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
you approach a band who make deliberate aesthetic decisions about their live show and try to get them to admit that the old days were better, you're probably not going to get an answer, and be left with their live show as it is, hoping that you understand it someday.
I don't get it either. this idea of listing your songs out on a screen instead of leaning into the visual and audio synthesis that made them so much more potent to me... "Rez" "Cowgirl" "Moaner." it all reads to me as Jeb Bush's "please clap" of dance music. "it is 'rez' time. please dance". are these song titles alone supposed to be invocations with the power to generate its own response? cut the crap and wring the dance out of us m8. but they're not coming from where I am with it. maybe there's a symbolism behind it I haven't gotten to. oh well? I still feel like it was a bit much of me to skip on their last tour for it and wish they'd swing by again. edit: i should also be a little nicer about it |

every few years, the discussion of underworld not doing improvs comes up.
there have been several posts about i think, back in 2008, and the last one in 2016, which got to 6 pages: https://www.borndirty.org/forums/sho...t=18319&page=6 later -1 |

maybe that's why there's that quote running around somewhere where they said they don't really have a fan club, which still makes me lol who wants to listen to a bunch of archaic vbulletin miserablists! they are interested in what they're doing now, not what some stubbleface collector goblin remembers from 1999. who plays to that?? if they even pretended to listen to us that beaucoup fish boxset would be.... so very different. b̵̥̩̟u҉̰̠t̶̤ ̦̩̲̙̻͎w͖̮̰͕e̶͈͈̪͚ ̯̖͎r͈̩̘̝̮e͏̬͚̦͕̙me͔̱̮͚͎͖ͅm̖̥͉͖̪̙̪b͔ęr̛̭̞̞ ̯͚̞͈̤̻a͇̺̱͉͎n̫̻̞͙͕̭̪d̮̥̦̼̬̝ ̻̝̀w͏̖̳͍̰̩̗e̯͖͇̯̜̝ͅ ̸̩̝̩̫ͅk̥̞̮͉͕̭̞͠n̫͚̞̜o͎̙̬͔̕w̛̻̜̠̙͇̼ ̰͔ẃ̬͎̩͕̞h͚̟͙̬̝a̖͙͇̝͈͍̠t̫'̗͖̺̺̜̜̺͝s̫ h͇͈͉̼͟a͓͓p̠̬̦̗͠p҉̣̻e͈̠͈͘ṇ̴̟̠͓̙̼̥e҉͈̠̼̖ḑ͎̻͉̤̼ then again, these interstitial nuggets between Drifts are clearly for us, so... who knows. |

Seeing as they are continuing to schedule bigger and bigger shows, what they are doing has been working. A little more boring to follow along at home, but there's like, dozens of us and we didn't pay the ticket fee. Shows are still great in person, though, and that's what ultimately matters. I hope these bits are teasers and foreshadowing for where they intend to go in the near future. Even if I'm wrong, these little archive droppings are amazing and please don't stop.

Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
Did they not improvise at rijkmuseum 18 months ago, proving they are still willing and capable on occasions.
I went to the ally pally gig 2017 and was disappointed. The highlight for me was Rick's ambient set, which at least had some improv even though most onlookers looked uninterested. |
Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
I very much miss the improvs and dirty tomato visuals from the shows of yore, my fan theories regarding the current more straightforward live gigs are:
- cost: mixing of live visuals, inflatables, etc. eats into R/K’s own payday and we all know Spotify, YouTube and the like don’t pay artists as much as physical sales used to - age/skill: Reading 99 (or wherever that seminal slow Rez was from) was 20 years ago! They had Emerson on stage then and Pricey during the last long string of the more “anything can happen†gigs. It can’t be easy to manage the chaos with just 2 guys in their 60s, especially when one is dancing and singing. (also another person to pay) - audience: festival shows means festival crowds, which trend younger. I’d bet the average kid at one of these doesn’t know the title of Rez, so it’s slapped up on the screen for easy Googling while going out of one’s head. Could be way off base here and don’t mean to sound ageist or jaded, but maybe they just can’t practically produce the kind of gig we all want from them anymore? The spirit of improv/controlled chaos/what will happen next is very much alive in the Drift series, though, so as long as they keep making music and coming around live, even if only to DJ until their 90s, I’m a happy fanboy:p |
Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
doesn't the lack of a 3rd member pretty much explain it? iirc those duo shows 'round 2002-2004 stuck fairly rigidly to a setlist

Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
I'm honestly just happy that the sets are much more varied again these days. I love the thing of them getting friends to write their setlists for them and trying to follow them. It's immediately more inspiring than the very static shows they were doing a few years ago.
But yeah, we often want bands to live up to expectations we place on them largely because of our own experiences and favourite eras. Would I love Underworld to be doing two hour unbroken improvised live sets? Yeah. Would I love Orbital to still be doing chunky analogue sounding breakbeat-infused 10 minute epics? Yeah. Would I love FSOL to still do audio-visual ISDN tours? Yeah. But these things just aren't what the artists want to do now, they've done that and are working in a way that reflects their interests and feelings in 2019. A few gifts to hardcore fans, like these between-Drift bonuses, are lovely, but they're very much the exception rather than the rule. |
Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
This also gives me hope that they might release "Glam Bucket" from the Hollywood Bowl.
It was a fantastic, very 'guitar forward' version. Or stuff like "Electraglide 2000" with those super early versions of 'Beautiful Burnout' and 'Bird 1'... If there's a soundboard recording of Juantia / Kiteless > Spoonman (Improv) > Kittens, from that show I would hope / expect that the rest of the show exists. (edit) And damn... this version of "Born Slippy" is awesome, and I love how 'Pearls Girl' is basically just being used as a bridge to lead into 'Beautiful Burnout' |

Although, I got the impression that it was more of a comment where Rick was saying: "Don't count on it being officially released like the LHN cd's" more so than - "We didn't even make a reference copy." And jeez... I just did a quick search on the forums, and it's funny re-reading comments about that performance, and that whole US Tour, |
Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
I just don't forsee underworld going back to an improv friendly setlist ever again.
The newer pre-drift tracks don't suit that style of playing. Sure maybe in the future, if they wanted to shock people, and do a drift heavy setlist, that could work. But at the expense of the tried and true tracks. very unlikely. later -1 |

Rijksmuseum Amsterdam gig does proof they could do it. The gear allows it. So I think its a choice and maybe done to make things easier to keep on performing live as much as possible and focus more on creating studio recordings. Point is that they also started to distance theirselves from fan communication. During the dirty radio sessions they answered a lot of fan questions. Last 10 years they talk to media a lot but I miss a fan based dirty FAQ. Gr, Mark |
Re: ATL080328 - 23 minute Born Slippy (Original)/Pearls Girl/Beautiful Burnout live j
Well, while I am old enough to have jumped on the dark train in 1996, I have always missed them live. Till now.
So, I am hunting the old recordings like a mad man, coz those improves are fucking fantastic, same as the radio shows (how many where there, I only have 3, sadly). But I am dying to see them live, even now. The idea of the big letter in the background being displayed is interesting, but it also can serve now to introduce new material like Border Country. Regardless, as I have said before, the 2 of them are in their 60s. Jamming like its nothing is insanely hard, and I am happy to see them shows like Sydney which still go the full length at all. That does cost a lot of energy. And seriously, maybe we are lucky and next is a subscription to old stuff next, after Drift. They seem to know what they wanna do and honestly, I would happily pay, if I get to hear / download old shows, unrelated stuff and jams. They have been harvesting email addresses quite well with the drift downloads, I think if 10% of all subscribers to the email list would convert to subscribers, I think they sustain a service like this. For example: sign up, get one new - old thing every week and download the archive as well or so. ok, I will go back to dreaming and looking forward what is next. PS: I am wondering what the 20 mins pearls girl would sound like mixed into the middle :D |

Plus: this "proper" Born Slippy (I call NUXX NUXX, since I first heard it on the double singe, coz deep pan is also not born slippy, or is it now?
Anyway, this is by far my fav version yet! |
