Drift Ep. 2, Part 1 - Appleshine

DRIFT, Episode 2 opens with Appleshine (film edit) - a minimalist, hypnotic small hours glide; a techno pulse wound tightly around a daydream vocal that ultimately unfolds into an ambient coda (reminiscent of Rez) that seems to make the whole track - and the listener - levitate. It is beautifully, uniquely, undoubtedly Underworld.

The track is available to download exclusively via https://underworldlive.com/drift

Appleshine features a new film by Simon Taylor, and Georgia and Lewis from Black Country, New Road on violin and flute respectively. The intro of the track was originally published online when Underworld headlined the BBC Biggest Weekend in Belfast last year - this is the first time the full track has been made available.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIHB72AwpHI

DRIFT started as a journey with no fixed destination; an experiment and a very public investigation of new working processes by Underworld. On that journey, Karl and Rick stopped at a pig shed in Essex; Rockingham Speedway; a hotel room in Reykjavik; AIR studios and a series of tiny club shows in Amsterdam, Manchester and London. Each of those stop off points helped influence the creation of DRIFT Episode 1 & 2.

Pace, vocal delivery and happy/sad mood of the two-chord alteration is giving off "Banstyle" vibes for me.

And that outtro was beautiful!

FYI, Black Country, New Road is Tyler Hyde's new band which arose from the ashes of Nervous Conditions' dissolution last year. Lewis normally plays sax in the band.

are we to assume Tyler Hyde is related to the Karls of Hyde?

Love it. And I for one take another 10 minutes of this. But if I understand Karl correctly, as heard on the BBC, this final mix was only delivered in the early hours of Thursday.
Uneducated guess: an edit could be longer then originally planned? Given that Apple shine was released last year first, this simply is a longer version with new additions (like Karl’s vocals which give me goosebumps)... and it’s edited for the film release.
But I gladly take a 20 minutes version of this!

Yes...his daughter, and she sings backup on "Barbara Barbara..." LP, along with Rick's daughter, Esme (also featured on Olympics tracks and the EP with Iggy Pop).

Just finished fifth playing of "Appleshine"....just, wow. Thank you, and more like this, please!

Could be. The film edits of Another Silent Way and Universe of Can When Back were significantly shorter than the full versions on the EP. OTOH, Dexters Chalk's film edit was a little bit longer in the outro than the EP version, which was shortened up.

She also sang backup during a couple of Karl's Edgeland shows. Here's a video of Black Country, New Road. You can see Georgia and Lewis playing violin and sax in the foreground, and Tyler playing bass guitar in the back. Their music is really interesting (as was Nervous Conditions' music).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiEXmOzTxIg

Lewis is also the sax player on Universe of Can When Back.

yeah don't riverrun this! better yet, seeing as how they're both "public experiments" package it all up together! not that it would make any sense..

as for the track i wouldn't say this beats out my faves from EP1 but it's lovely

If they continue the physical reissue boxsets, I hope they give Riverrun Series its due. I'd love to hear it remastered and expanded. Honestly, up until Drift Episode 1, Riverrun Series was my last favorite thing of theirs.

I view this Drift episodes as kind of continuation of the Riverrun series. Not exatly like that, but it reminds me of that somehow and I very welcome this new Drift approach for releasing music. Its great to be again connected like we were in the past, in the past decade. Appleshine is amazing piece of work, I can hear Ricks Yamaha DX7 there. Great atmosphere, like in old times. Hooray.

Re: Drift Ep. 2, Part 1 - Appleshine

Oh yeah, it's definitely like Riverrun, and I really appreciate that. Ultimately, I'll likely listen to the physical releases a lot more, purely out of habit and most of my listening coming from browsing my shelves. But the fact that they're releasing music in this way is enjoyable in itself: the feeling of connection, the excitement of a new track each week, the looser, more spontaneous approach to the music itself. There are still very few established artists really taking advantage of the freedom digital distribution provides, so I'm glad that some of my favourite artists are doing so (FSOL have been doing a 'calendar album' - one track a month over the course of a year - for three years now which feels very similar to this in some ways).

there might be a physical release someday.

but in the past it was all on vinyl, which i love.

if it does come out on vinyl, i'm sure there will be complaints about that also.

i'm not saying cd's are dead. but the fact the vast majority of the recent underworld
singles are all digital is pretty much standard practice.

CD singles are pretty close to dead.

CDs still outsell vinyl, cassette and downloads in the UK. It's only streaming that beats them.

unless its a deluxe edition. i don't care about cd's.

nowadays, its this stupid digipack, or even worse,
a slipcase, and thats it.

it's not worth getting it for something i am going to rip,
and never look at again.

if you put out something deluxe, or 2cd, then MAYBE,
but other than that, vinyl and digital satisfy my needs.

for vinyl, i do play them, and rip them if there are exclusive tracks,
and sometimes they sound better than the official digital rips.

but mostly i like them for the artwork.

To each their own, my friend!

Frankly, a lot of my digital music gets tossed aside and forgotten. if i make the effort to buy a CD, that means (1) I like the artist more than casually, (2) i want to spend some focused time listening to them... digital is all-encompassing. I listen to streams and downloads on commutes and at work as background music.Bands and preferences come and go. It takes that little effort to load a CD and commit to the playtime. I have thousands of CDs, so the choice is not trivial. (3) Permanence, my man, permanence. So much digital info floats past us each day, we're all becoming attention-deficit. I like a reminder, a relic if you will, of what i was/am into, and the physical artwork (small as it is). It's an investment into the music of your life. Downloads are effortless and almost meaningless to me. By the way, i'm 39, have lived through vinyl, cassettes, CDs, digital files and streaming. I still prefer to collect my favorite bands on something tactile. I'll still burn mp3s/wavs/flacs to disc.

p.s. who cares about our musical consumption preferences? It''s so easy to jump media these days.

i agree with you on your thoughts.
but a lot of time you can just burn your own cd, if you really want one.

i drive an old car (20+) years, and both this and my previous ones had
cassette decks. so i switched over to an FM transmitter that plugs
into my phone, as a media player. my speakers stopped working,
so i have USB speakers in the car also. ha ha

anyways, the current car the speakers work, but i saw this gadget which
is basically an MP3 player, that plays in a cassette, but the kicker is,
i have to use an SD adapter, and put the files on microSD. you can't
really see what you're playing, or fiddle around with playlists because
it just plays tracks through. so i bought a bunch of micro SD cards,
and have them separated by groups, albums, etc. just for fun.

Ah, this is a good thing for me. CDs don't have that much going for them aesthetically, but the jewel case is one of the ugliest things ever, and makes CDs seem even more cheap and plasticky than they are. The recent emphasis on digipaks and digifiles is definitely a good thing for me.

Vinyl... lovely things. But frankly I can't be arsed with cleaning, surface noise, bad pressings, flipping sides every 15 minutes. It just makes it a bit of a chore, whereas a CD you just pop in and let it run.
