Absolutely giddy. Thanks for the periscope :)

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
HOLY SHIT.
Underworld has never played 8 Ball before, not as Underworld anyway. I hope they play this in California. Wow. |

How about Ring Road? Was that Ring Road lyrics over Minneapolis, or was it Ring Road proper? |

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
There's some YouTube video of "Eight Ball" along with a few others.
https://youtu.be/6GzyCr6FJgc I like "Eight Ball" but it seems like an odd choice to me for the live show. Seems low energy but maybe it's placement in the set makes sense compared to some of the bangers. I love the lighting effects for the song, those are super cool. |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
OH MY GOODNESS. ROWLA?! FAXED INVITATION!? Juanita?! Ring Road?! EIGHTBALL?? A NEW DIRTY MIX?!?!?!?!!?

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Dirty Club sounds great!
Thanks so much for all of these recordings. Great to see that Eight Ball is now getting live plays, it will be great to have a chance to experience it live but tbh it just sounds exactly like the studio version... If I was a greedy so and so I would hope it was a bit more unique when live... instead it sounds very much like a carbon copy. That said.. happy to have it at all.. it has been a long time coming. |

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
The Union Hall gig from Karl Hyde was the best version of 8 Ball I've ever seen. It seems like he's more personally invested in the track there, and everything about the setup and lighting just seems more apt.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkushEk_JCA 8 Ball always seemed more like a Karl track to me. Great as it is to see it getting an airing during the UW shows, I fear it may not be the best place for it. |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Loved both German shows immensely. Great to hear Juanita back. Fantastic bangin finish. Low Burn sounded like a proper UW tune. Dirty Club is, er, epic (where does that piano arpeggio come from?) Something for everyone I reckon, and 8 Ball is perfectly placed for a toilet break.

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Love seeing that KoS looks quite intense, the lighting effects there are very cool imo. I was a bit worried about this song after seeing the BBC concert, it seemed like it had lost something in a live setting but it looks all good in that YouTube video.

Ring Road (over Minneapolis beat)....
https://soundcloud.com/georg-1/ring-road-live-in-mannheim-2016 :D |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
That is fantastic. Thanks, Georg.
I went back and listened to the radio broadcast from 2008, and they used the recorded vocal track, i.e. Karl didn't sing it live. So this (well, Berlin) is the first time they've performed this live. |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
So is this Minneapolis with Ring Road lyrics or Ring Road with Minneapolis beat? I love it but its causing me a headache for the Gigography :)
|
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Well, usually when you say "with X lyrics" on the Gigography, that means Karl sang a few bars from one song at some point in another song. This is quite different from that. The entire Ring Road lyrics are being performed, and those lyrics are a significant element and focus of Ring Road, the song. So, classifying it as something like "Minneapolis (with Ring Road lyrics)" is selling it short, I think. It's a true Ring Road/Minneapolis mash-up.

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Firstly thanks to all for the great links.
Just wanted to ask the dirties regarding the lack of an encore. Call me a bit oldskool, but i think an encore (even 5min) is necessary for any proper concert. And having seen this great band over 10 times, this is the FIRST time they never encored. Any ideas why? I mean, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and Daft Punk also dont do encores, but that is why i have always placed Underworld much over their contemporaries......one of many reasons, but also that they play it like a rock band (which they are ;-) anyway, the concert in mannheim was absolutely a gorgeous experience and one of the best times ive had seeing them.....but i was left dissapointed at the end, being no encore. a very paradoxal feeling.... ;) |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
An Encore would be great but but I just wish they'd give NUXX a rest and play something else for once. I know it pleases the casual fans but UW are better than a greatest hits act.
If they must play Born Slippy how about doing the original instrumental, or one of the other many versions of NUXX. |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Well, think of it this way. If they play straight through their allotted time, instead of leaving and waiting to come back out for an encore, the audience gets 2-3 more minutes of playtime. Maybe that means the difference between getting Juanita and some other song that's shorter.

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Haven't watched any of the fan clips, but noticed the absence of Karl's guitar on the 6 Music show and was wondering if he picked it up at all during the Germany gigs?
|
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
I've always thought encores are cheesy so I don't miss it at all. Why waste time? NUXX or Moaner is a great closer too if they want to leave with maximum energy. I was drained after Rowla-Rez/Cowgirl-NUXX. Brilliant 1-2-3 intense finish.
I do miss the experimental UW but that's not what's on offer. Probably never again. Still great tunes though. Have fun tonight folks. |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Am ok with no encore and the DJ "opener" because he plays really good tunes and I dont have to sit through some band I dont know and more often than not don't enjoy.
No guitar at all in Germany, so I am wondering if perhaps guitar is not on tap for this tour? |

I will be calling this "Ring Road Minneapolis" (as credited fro a previous radio show).

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Both Ring Road/Minnaepolis + Santiago Quattro were first broadcast in the April 2008 jam. Looks like the band looked through their archives recently.

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
*looks at dubno and stiti reissues* no idea what would give you that idea... :)

however, altho i seem to be alone in this opinion in this thread, ive come to "expect" encores when seeing a band live. regardless of the extra 3-5min of music, its the "feeling" of the main part being done, the anticipation of the last ending part, and the final hoorah of the night. on this particular night they rocked us from start to finish.....and after a gorgeous rendition of Nuxx (it never gets old in my opinion!), they left, the house lights came on, and security immed. started sheparding us out...... the highest high to the most nasty reality check ever..... simply said, an encore is a buffer. and, in my opinion, a necessary one :) regardless, epic night! so clean, it was dirty ;) |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
An encore is a necessary buffer. The days when they'd do a 150-170 minute set with barely a pause between songs (as I remember, there's about 1 second of 'pause' in the European Club Gig bootleg's first 70 minutes) are gone I can't keep up with that now, and neither can they! I'd rather the last encore be something that isn't NUXX, but then, great as NUXX is, and it's always a belter live, it's pretty much their "Ace of Spades", and the crowd kind of have a deal, that they will be patient as long as they get "NUXX Of Spades" at the end.

Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
Did anybody else notice the camera on the right side?
The picture was taken before the show and I moved more to the front, so I don't know if the whole gig was filmed... http://i64.tinypic.com/23r7fjr.jpg |
Re: 2016-03-18 Mannheim, Germany
They pretty much always have a camera at FOH for every gig, I've noticed. I'm not sure whether they're recording for the archives, or if it's used in the live projection production.
