The RiverRun Project - 10 years later

10 years ago today Lovely Broken Thing came out.

It's been about 10 years since I listened to this series so when I learned of the timing I was a bit perplexed so decided to share. I went on a musical journey outside of electronic music and I recently returned back to it thanks to this series. I listened to them a lot when they first came out then buried the tracks under countless folders and harddrive backups. I've recently gone back to school and in the process learned I need cathartic calming music that has such peculiar rhythm and rhyme that it is completely unique.
I remembered the feelings I craved and the RiverRun series came to mind so I found it on a drive I backed up a year ago.

This music is truly unique and beautiful and so poetic, its very inspiring and soothing at the same time. The mere fact the track lengths are the side of a 33 tells you they want you to put it on when you got time to enjoy it.

Pizza for Eggs was my favorite back in the day, which I'm still partial to, but the other 3 have grown on me in such mature ways. It's interesting blasting them in the car now, because they go and go and the tempos and keys are so brilliant. I didn't appreciate the production as much back then because I hadn't worked in the industry yet and I didn't know what good really sounded like. But the production is excellent, Underworld is setting a standard in this arena but they did it so lo-key and today it is the way the industry is heading: highly well made tracks available at the click of a button or press of the screen.

I think what makes this series and indeed Underworld's catalog so enduring is the style and composure and production of the music. I listened to a lot of music in the past 10 years, and still haven't found anything compared to this. In the RiverRun series, Underworld shows they know exactly the image of a song and know that normal song rules don't apply. The track is the image of the sounds and the sounds they pick are so unique. So bizarre I got back into this series almost 10 years to the day before.

I would really like this series on vinyl and maybe someday that will happen. But as of now I'll keep playing them, and letting them take me on a journey.

I agree, this was probably the last best thing they have done.

Have all the vinyl 12 series, and most of the promo cds.

Hope they return to this style someday.

Great post. I agree with both of you completely.

For me personally, I'm a Big Sister.. is the best thing they've ever done. When the 'these are the rails' sample arrives at the ~26 minute mark, it just all ties everything together so perfectly and I get goosebumps. Every damn time.

This doesn't get anywhere near as much play by me as it should. It's raining in nyc today - time to crank up some 'vision, c'mon.'

This thread made me listen to the riverrun again after quite a while and what a treat!
I agree wonderful and innovative works has it really been this long since they released them..wow
If they carry on in the remastering / re-releasing we may have a nice box set to look forward to in 10 years time....
I think i have 5 vinyl releases and a few promos, of course there was the japan only ancient phat farm I never got arggg.

Pizza for Eggs has been my favorite of the three, but the other two are very very close behind them. always gorgeous listens on drowsy mornings.

2005-06 was a fine time for our favorite band. Lots of new tracks appearing live, radio shows, and of course RiverRun. I remember how much I anticipated each release, and wasn't disappointed. Love em all, probably IABS most for the warm ambience, though the paranoid vocals and rhythms of PFE, the hard edge of LBT...they still excite. I've mixed all three together for an immersive 80+ minute experience. About time to listen again!

Lovely timely reminder of this series of releases. Going to listen to them while I work this afternoon.

Disappointed with myself though that I seem to only have them in low quality via cloud storage (iTunes!). I'd love to get the full quality downloads again but the accounts we used to have on UnderworldLive seem to be long gone. :(

Maybe they'll release them one day. Digital files. Flick of a switch. We live in hope.

2005-2006 was a great time to be an Underworld fan. The 3 hour shows they did, and the RiverRun and lots of new tracks and never the same show twice. Online pioneers selling it thru their own site. A lot of the tracks from Oblivion With Bells also got played out. Its a shame that its digital only and never got a physical release. There were plenty of remixes and one of my favourites is the Misterons mix. Definitely time for a re-evaluation and audit to see what we were left with.

was trying to get a preservation of all the promo cd-singles going on the tracker.

but that lost interest.

i have all the files ready, need someone to post them to the tracker.

I always feel bamboo belongs with the River runs, though I know it appeared later.

I was listening to Bamboo tonight and noticed that along with the 'vision, come on' lyrics, towards the end you can hear 'amnesia' being repeated.

puts it in the fold for me...

It absolutely does. Bamboo first appeared on the Music Bank rehearsal jam in 2004.

Re: The RiverRun Project - 10 years later

I've tried and tried to make a playlist that matches how I think an album-style release (as oppossed to three EP's) might work. I even took to declicking some of the radio broadcasts of "Bamboo" but gave up in the end. It was a crazy time - the band were super prolific and yet, at the same time, seemed to have a super low profile in the UK as there were no gigs and no physical releases beyond the limited 12"s.

stimpee 11-23-2015 05:27 AM

Re: The RiverRun Project - 10 years later

True, they played one festival (Global Gathering) in the UK and the sound was terrible as it was outdoor on an airfield, and it was a festival set. Their own gigs were a sensation though. Check the RTSR tracker for the Luxembourg gig, and I think the summer Amsterdam gig from the same year (2005) also got an official release (but without Parc/Darc as that was to be released on The Bells The Bells).

I think we can easily compile what was released.

The original EPs (3 of those)
The Misterons bonus EP mix
The Japanese release featuring Ancient Phat Farm Coat in its entirety, and unmixed JAL and Food A Ready.
The 12 inches with the remixes on is another sub-category: JAL to Tokyo (Woolford, Wruhme), Play Pig (Buick and Pig&Dan), Peggy Sussed (Heller) and Vanilla Monkey (Martinez) . These 12s also yielded unmixed Play Pig and Vanilla Monkey.

I'm sure Raj will jump in if ive missed something. Although Bamboo and Darc/Parc are from this era Im not sure i'd include them as they werent released until post OWB.

stimpee 11-23-2015 05:33 AM

disregarding the 3 EPs and the bonus EP:

JAL To Tokyo (Paul Woolford Vocal) 7:56

JAL To Tokyo (River Run Version) 5:48

Peggy Sussed (Pete Heller Vocal) 7:36
Peggy Sussed (Pete Heller Dub) 7:22
Peggy Sussed (River Run Version) 2:20

Play Pig (Pig & Dan Re-Mix 1) 7:58
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Re-Mix 2) 7:58
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Re-Mix 3) 3:41
Play Pig (Buick Project Re-Mix 1) 9:51
Play Pig (Buick Project Re-Mix 2) 8:38
Play Pig (Wighnomy & Robag Wruhme Moosmutzel With Melody Remix) 5:39
Play Pig (Underworld Riverrun Version) 3:55

Vanilla Monkey (Martinez Hungry Ghost Mix) 7:35
Vanilla Monkey (Underworld Riverrun Version) 5:12

Ancient Phat Farm Coat 19:43
Food A Ready 7:22

Nah, Darc was released with the Amsterdam set. It was the gigs with Crocodile that consistently omitted that track.

For released tracks, there's also a Lovely Broken Thing promo that contained unmixed versions of all those tracks (including a 10 minute version of Lenny Penne.

There are also the two versions of Peach Tree on the Crocodile and BBB singles. And for remixes there's also the High Society Lenny Penne remix.

The RiverRun period easily extends through the end of the Oblivion with Bells releases. I would include stuff like Breaking & Entering, Sunshine, Loads of Birds, etc. If you don't mind including webcasts, there's lots of RiverRun stuff in there too (Choppo, TT, Bear of a Man)

Been a long time since I was here, but feels good to be back!

On revisiting these myself now, I see that a lot of my files are not in the best of quality. I have the originals in 192kbs mp3, and from looking at various sources I see that Lovely, Pizza and Big Sister is available in lossless, but not JAL or the Misterions mix, is that right?

stimpee 11-23-2015 10:23 AM

Re: The RiverRun Project - 10 years later

Okay, I knew one song was omitted. I concede that any unmixed versions should be included, and the remixes of Lenny Penne. Still, Darc was on The Bells The Bells. Any radio show stuff should be on a separate radio shows release :-)

I'd love to hear Crocodile again from 2005. The Zurich version is good. But this is OWB-stuff and you need to draw a line somewhere.

Well, R+K even said as much in interviews that OwB was a continuation of the RiverRun Project, and there's definitely a through-line there.

So, personally, I draw the line after OwB. They kind of stopped the conversation after that, and the tone of Barking and its release was completely different, even though some of the Barking tracks had their origins in the RiverRun period (ALAF, Scribble).

The original releases of the 3 EP's were in 192 Kbps MP3 only. In 2010, they became available on the Underworld Shop in lossless WAV. At the same time, the 5 RiverRun singles also became available in WAV, which means there were lossless unmixed releases of JAL to Tokyo, Play Pig, Vanilla Monkey, and Peggy Sussed and their accompanying remixes. Unfortunately, they are no longer available on the Shop.

The Misterons Mix was only ever available in its original 192 Kbps MP3 form, since it was a free bonus. It was never made available for sale. The unmixed Ancient Phat Farm Coat is the other thing that was only available in lossy form.

Is there any way of getting hold of a copy of the lovely broken thing promo cd? How many copies were made? I'd love to hear Billy Goat unmixed. Also has anyone ever worked out how to get a copy of that full version of Ancient phat farm coat from Japanese iTunes as after peach tree it's my favourite of all the river run tracks.
Final question are the 2 versions of peach tree different? I've got the one on the crocodile but if the other is different will have to get it!
Cheers!

Re: The RiverRun Project - 10 years later

I remember obtaining these in 192kbps... and then re-purchasing the WAV's because you have to have these in Lossless... I've got them, but I don't know if these would be considered "OOP" or "Promo" items to put them on the tracker.

I'm A Big Sister... is my goto mix whenever I go on a chill trip, which is quite often. ;)

Aside from the 3 Riverrun Mixes I also have the following in Lossless:

JAL - (Paul Woolford Vocal)
JAL (Paul Woolford Dub)
Play Pig (Buick Project Mix 1)
Play Pig (Buick Project Mix 2)
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Mix 1)
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Mix 2)
Peggy Sussed (Robag Mix with Melody)
Peggy Sussed (Pete Heller Vocal)
Peggy Sussed (Pete Heller Dub)
Vanilla Monkey (Martinez Mix)
Lenny Penne (High Society Mix)
Food A Ready
Ancient Phat Farm Coat (Lossy)
JAL To Tokyo

King of Snake (Rick's Bungalow Edit)
King of Snake (Rick's Bungalow Mix)

These were all obtained from Promo CD's that I got on eBay. The Riverrun Promo CD's were a set of 3, and the KOS was a promo by itself - but I have them all on 2 CD-R now.

Unfortunately, the JAL to Tokyo EP is out of print (can digital items be out of "print"?), so Ancient Phat Farm Coat is no longer available.

Peach Tree on BBB is a different edit from the version on Crocodile.

Sorry, I know in the past RTSR was used to trade "rare" materials like remixes and b-sides, but these days with the advent of broadband and file sharing and social media, these things are no longer difficult to obtain. In light of that, RTSR is focused on live recording material only now, and we cannot allow any officially released material (whether in-print or out-of-print) to be distributed on there (case-by-case exceptions may be made for truly exceptional material, like the demos for Dubno and AHDO).

That said, we can't stop you from using PM's and e-mails.

Conversations such as this truly make me feel my age! Oh, to be in an era where lossless files and remasters are the norm. Never mind that some of us were previously excited by a 192kbs mp3 or a lofi capture of internet radio...

You had to be there, as "Almost Famous" taught us. I came into dirty around 2000, and there were folks tendering earlier when " the internet" was a mystery.

All that said, Underworld has been incredibly generous over the years with countless radio shows, live gigs, riverruns, and jams posted directly here at the appropriate media of the time. Thanks!

You mentioned this way back in 2006 in this link here.

Along with upto 4 accapella versions when it was Mr & Mrs Christmas - Bang The Poll. Care to shed some more light on this? Anyone?

stimpee 12-07-2015 10:20 AM

The Bang The Poll Accapella 4 is featured on the BBC Essential mix by Paul Woolford - Available on this mixcloud https://www.mixcloud.com/BBCEssentia...l-mix02102005/ skip ahead to about 1h6m30s for the first recognisable parts of JAL to Tokyo.

It doesnt sound like an Accapella to me. I reckon its the Vocal mix. It goes on until about 1h14m20s then fades/mixes. Don't have the Sunrise Dub and Vocal mix to hand though, to compare. Sunrise Dub = Paul Woolford Dub i think...

Anyone care to make an updated list of Riverrun tracks, taking my list as source? No radio show stuff, no LHN tracks, no OWB-era tracks. This is 2005-2006 stuff that actually got a release, either official or on promo.

TheBang 02-29-2016 11:33 AM

Re: The RiverRun Project - 10 years later

OK, sure. This is the officially released stuff, including promos, but no live shows, no radio shows, nothing released from OwB and on.

Lovely Broken Thing - 28:37
Pizza for Eggs - 25:08
I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and This Is My Horse - 30:34
The Misterons Mix - 30:21

JAL to Tokyo - 5:48
Billy Goat - 6:06
Peggy Sussed - 2:25
Dub Shepherd - 2:47
Lenny Penne - 10:25
Monkey Wink - 3:44
Witness - 1:50

Ancient Phat Farm Coat - 19:44
Food a Ready - 7:23

Vanilla Monkey - 5:35
Play Pig - 5:06

Peach Tree - 12:35
Peach Tree (alternate edit) - 12:35

-------------------

Remixes

JAL to Tokyo (Paul Woolford Vocal) - 7:56
JAL to Tokyo (Paul Woolford Sunrise Dub) - 7:56
Vanilla Monkey (Martinez Hungry Ghost Mix) - 7:36
Play Pig (Wighnomy & Robag Wruhme Moosmutzel with Melody Remix) - 5:40
Play Pig (Buick Project Remix 1) - 9:51
Play Pig (Buick Project Remix 2) - 8:38
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Remix 1) - 7:59
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Remix 2) - 7:59
Play Pig (Pig & Dan Remix 3) - 3:42
Peggy Sussed (Pete Heller Vocal) - 7:36
Peggy Sussed (Pete Heller Dub) - 7:23
Lenny Penne (High Society Mix) - 6:08

-------------------

However, if you really want to be complete, the band considers stuff through OwB to be part of the RiverRun Project, so you'd have to include the Breaking and Entering soundtrack, Sunshine soundtrack, OwB and all its remixes, probably Phonestrap and 020202, and all the unreleased tracks on live releases and radio shows.
