Special Editions of new album
With everyone doing special editions of albums with extra artwork, packaging etc, how much would you pay for something like that for a new UW release, and what would you expect?
UW have done something to an extent in the past with a unique photo being in the first few editions of the Belly book, but I'm unsure what they could do that hasn't already been done. |
Re: Special Editions of new album
Well, the last album had a DVD in it. The japanese 1992-2002 had a DVD in it also...
|
Re: Special Editions of new album
if they do a special edition it will probably be Japan only.
|
Re: Special Editions of new album
I want mine in a pink shiny tin box with a DVD in it pls thx. :p

Re: Special Editions of new album
What was on the Japanese DVD with 1992-2002? I'm working on a compilation of all the underworld audio only available in DVD menus or radio broadcasts or the old underworldlive.com and I don't thnk I even knew about that one.

Re: Special Editions of new album
I totally want a special preorder for this coming album - maybe another t-shirt + a bonus dvd? I cannot live with just one Underworld t-shirt. Hahaha.

Re: Special Editions of new album
Blu-ray of visuals from Tomato and music from UW would be ideal (hint, cough, hint). MMM 120Hrz 1080P, I luv U!
What I'd really like to see is the album continue on in downloadable content....have it fade out or stop right as something cool is happening, then release 30-45 minute mixed track EPs on a timed schedule (similar to RiverRun project) that picks up the album where it left off and continues it for hours on end. Remixes from Underworld themselves (a la "Barking Mix" of King of Snake) a month or two after the fact. A whole "Reworked" remix album featuring only Rick, Darren, and Karl's changes and additions would be a REALLY interesting idea. Downloadable song stems and WAVs of individual loops, beats, tracks, vocals, etc. for endless and creative fan mixes/variations. This could be done with a code printed on a ticket where you'd go to a website to download. You could include this ticket in normal edition too and charge for the content or limit it to somthing like "try one song, buy Stems of the rest of the tracks for X amount of $") Something nice to display at work in a cubicle that's classy and isn't all marketing and advertising "UNDERWORLD!!!1!!!". Just some nice art for people to talk about or admire as they walk by. Rock Band or Guitar/DJ Hero tracks from this or previous albums. Numbered and signed drop of blood from all three band members.:D Really depends on what's in it for how much I'd be willing to pay......US $40-$50 is about where I'd draw the line though. |

Re: Special Editions of new album
the japanese special eds. are way too expensive. i remember when i went to buy 1992_2002 and wanted to get the japanese release with the dvd, the catalog from the store had it marked at almost 80dollars! i paid 80dollars for the in rainbows discbox. i had to settle with the 'regular' special editions of 1992_2002 and OwB.
also, i live at the end of the world, so there. records are crazy expensive here. and underworld releases are scarce. i haven't seen OwB in a store, ever. so, if i wanted a special edition of the new album, i would love to see a product which documents the creative process the album: CD+DVD, book with tons of pretty images to look at, and things you can't get in the normal editions. also, a packaging that won't get lost during the shipping process. just because i don't want to upset danielle again. she's so nice and she doesn't deserve to deal with my missing packages... |
Re: Special Editions of new album
I want a special edition with hidden track that plays a recording of Rick and Karl laughing their asses off at the Good Day Today thread and all the 'this isn't underworld' nonsense.
|
Re: Special Editions of new album
I'd love some extra artwork - a la the special editions of Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree, which featured a few postcards with artwork and a poster, or UNKLE's War Stories which had a forty-page booklet of artwork printed on really good quality paper. Something like that, maybe?
Personally I'd kill for some little videos much like Rick's remix video or the 'where are the supermodels?' vids on YouTube, but I'm a bit of a dork like that... |
Re: Special Editions of new album
Underworld should look no further than Nine Inch Nails for special edition inspiration. Check this out:
http://ghosts.nin.com/images/popup_product_deluxe.jpg And that's not even the most expensive package. NIN is leading the way with this kind of stuff for the independent artist. The music itself is essentially free, so give us something precious like a beautiful physical package or multi-tracks or a book. Underworld have cultivated a fanbase of aesthetically-minded creative types and we would eat something like this up. It's also, I suspect, a license to print money. Here is the most expensive NIN package, priced at US$300. They limited production to 2,500 and they sold every single one of them. That's US$750,000 before expenses. That's astonishing. I've no doubt Underworld could do something similar. |
Re: Special Editions of new album
nah; if you REALLY want to do something special, you've got to outdo pixies' minotaur retailing at $495
Minotaur - Limited Edition includes: •All five Pixies' studio albums in the following formats: 24k gold plated CDs; 180 gram virgin vinyl 12" LPs cut from the original analog tapes; Blu-ray audio mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/192; DVD mastered for 5.1 surround sound and 2 channel stereo at 24/96. •The previously unreleased Pixies 1991 live performance from Brixton, on both Blu-ray and DVD, mastered for 5.1 surround sound at 24/192 and 24/96, respectively. •A 96-page fine art book, measuring 22" x 14", and an additional 54-page book, measuring 7.75" x 8.25" •A 12" x 19.5" giclee print, and two double-sided fold-out posters measuring 48" x 36." •Individually numbered and hand-signed by every member of the Pixies and Vaughan Oliver. •25 random sets will include test pressings of the vinyl albums. •Housed in an oversized clamshell case and limited to 3000 copies. |
Re: Special Editions of new album
If we're talking a reissue of the classic Underworld catalogue, then absolutely, the Pixies set is the model. I'm not even a big Pixies fan and I want it. The package is also created in collaboration with the same design outfit who made those NIN things.
What I think Underworld should avoid is a Depeche Mode Sounds of the Universe situation. That release crossed over into silly and greedy. |

There should defo be special editions but be realistic and nice about it... it would be a huge change of character to turn around and charge copious amounts of cash for a video and some squiggle from Karl and Rick... Music... just want music.. merci.. |
Re: Special Editions of new album
nah, nothing beats spiritualized special re-release of ladies and gentleman, we're floating in space ;)
|
Re: Special Editions of new album
The cover art reminds me of those 80s posters people had: neon lights, white-faced chickies with sunglasses on, bright red lipstick.
It also looks a lot like every 10th image on ffffound.com. Thankfully, I don't buy Underworld albums for the covers. :) |
Re: Special Editions of new album
i saw the minotaur at the pixies exhibition recently - a very pushy saleswoman was trying to get me to invest. unfortunately, i agree that however nice it is (and it IS nice!) it's just not something for a regular fan - maybe for an investor, who may not even be bothered about the band at all.
:( (i'd rather spend £3k on a massive surfer rosa print!) |

Anyway as much as I love cool packaging I'm hoping they do more with the UWLive store. I liked the 020202 and Phonestrap releases but the tunes themselves were only okay. I'm glad that they are selling the old albums but I wonder why the hard-to-get B-sides aren't up there when they easily could be, especially when those B-sides are some of UW's best work. Likewise I'm sure there's a bunch of B-sides for this album that would be great to see online!! That said i'll definitely be picking up a vinyl... |
Re: Special Editions of new album
pretty sure an UW box set designed by them and the tomato camp would be the best thing i've ever seen in my life.

Re: Special Editions of new album
I want one of those abandoned car from the old serie of picture by karl, I want it pimped with ipod filled with everything and projector beaming from the roof to inflatable tube screen setup in front... also I want the inside seating to be replaced by one of those couch from the old 365 serie, I and want a stuffed barney sitting in the back.

Re: Special Editions of new album
I would really like to see a deluxe CD + tshirt combination offered as a preorder, just as it was for OWB...at least in the states.

Re: Special Editions of new album
I'd love things like a 5.1 surround mix version of the entire album, a DVD with videos, a t-shirt or hoodie or something, and maybe a bonus track or two. Maybe even some isolated elements from a few tracks for those of us who'd like to do some fan remixes....
And if it could be made readily available, that would be awesome. I'm still kind of peeved about how much of a pain in the ass it's been to get certain Underworld releases in recent years. Having to establish a ghost address in Japan to be able to buy a Japanese itunes gift card so that we could download a couple remixes that weren't released anywhere else BUT Japan - that kind of crap doesn't fly with me. Not when it's so easy to make any format attainable to anyone in the world these days. |

Re: Special Editions of new album
when they released EE, it was groundbreaking for a Live CD / DVD, they could / should move to a Blu Ray release - even with some 3D element!! Get Cameron on the case as director....
big ask, but if we're suggesting - this is what i'd like - High Definition UW, not High Contrast UW |
Re: Special Editions of new album
Both Montreux Jazz Festival gigs (2005 and 2009) were professionally filmed and archived in HD by the festival. I wish those would be released on Blu-ray.
