Re: Spam
"Electronic Jamming . . . "
Welcome to the party folks! Speaking of. Over at CNN there's a "Ticker" something along the lines of: Bush was mistaken, GOP says. I keep getting a 403 error and cannot read it. If anyone else can, would you please post it in the world forums or something? |
Re: Spam
I've banned those 3. If there are any more, post their names here, I guess.

Re: Spam
nope... i've had 4 in the past couple of days.
it's good of the forum support to let me know i have issues with virii and a handy site to click on to make it all better though. :) |
Re: Spam
K, 6 or 7 users banned based on that.
|
Re: Spam
They keep making new member names. I now get spammed by ModeratorTeam
|
Re: Spam
Now, why do I get emails from private messages but not emails from forum replies? Hmm.
|
Re: Spam
Is there any plugin we can use to prevent this spam?
|
Re: Spam
I have a copy of Advanced IP Ban Manager for vBulletin 3.6/3.7/3.8. It can be implemented fairly painlessly but the instructions say that its heavily recommended to do a db backup. I'm an admin, but i dont have file system access to check and see if there is filespace to make the backup. Me and Yannick being a few timezones away doesnt help communication.

Re: Spam
Um, I just got a PM from some "RootModeratorX" or something like that saying he is an administrator here. He said I have a virus and that I should click on the URL given to have a system check. Before this, I saw a message that said "Would you like a reader receipt?". I clicked yes on the reader receipt. I reread the message and was hesitant on clicking on the URL given, and then I looked at the name of the person sending the PM and saw that he is banned (said so under his name).
So I suspect he is trying to spread viruses, or at the least, promote a virus scan site. I didn't click on the URL. Is there a problem with clicking yes on the reader receipt? Is that something to be suspicious of (I'm fearing the worst, like it slipped in a trojan my anti-virus software didn't catch)? Or does clicking yes on the message that popped up mean nothing bad? My anti-virus software is good (Avast). |
Re: Spam
um.. about 2 or 3 am last night my computer was hijacked by malware, specifically Spywareguard 2008. I really have no idea where I got it. It was a work computer so I was behind some fairly substantial layers of proxies and firewalls. Not to mention the fact that my being at work meant I was not indulging in any gentlemanly proclivities. (my little pony cos-play porn yay!) What I did just do however is go through my private messages on this site.
The first thing that happened was fire fox hanged and the adobe reader helper process crashed. Took 3 hours of safe mode quarantining with various tools to eradicated it. just an fyi |
Re: Spam
OK, finally found the IP banning section of the Admin CP, and added ModeratorTeam's IP to it (six other accounts from that IP too).
We may, however, need a more dynamic blocking tool, so I will look into that and try to get in touch with yan too. |

Anyone else had a PM from Serendipity?

Re: Spam
Just banned em. Also AlexModerator. Excellent new nick for an unknown Polish ISP. John The Revelator I can cope with. Alex Moderator sounds a tad off to me.... :p

Re: Spam
Gee, thx. I guess I should have been posted more inaccurate information then my posts wouldn't have been considered spam?
Nothing makes sense anymore. Again. |

Spam: We are working on it. Have patience.
I just got this in my PM box:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y39...g?t=1266729653 The username is AlexAdministrator. I've ignored it thusfar, but this is getting ridiculous— someone who isn't up-to-date on computer technology could think their dirty account is actually being threatened. There needs to be some kind of screening process for new usernames, like "Why do you want to be on dirty.org? What was your first Underworld experience?" This would easily do away with all these spam posters. |
Re: New spam threatening to delete dirty accounts - please ignore, everyone!
Not everyone here likes underworld.
|
Re: Spam: We are working on it. Have patience.
I've switched on email verification for new users, and no users with Admin / Forum / Moderator in. Lets see if it makes any difference. Can ban individual IPs with a plug in or by editing the .htaccess file manually (neither of which I can do).

If only we could eliminate all the spam reported in cable news & THEIR websites, huh?

Re: Spam: We are working on it. Have patience.
came back after a very long board break today and found one of these spam messages in my inbox. didn't click anything within the message, mind you. still, when i closed the browser my avast virus detector app popped up with a warning that a virus/worm had been detected. the timing was uncanny.
just a heads up for anyone who opened the message. you might have caught an internet STD without realizing it. |
Re: Spam: We are working on it. Have patience.
apologies for that if thats the case. since i made the changes we havent had any more spam. fingers crossed.

Re: Spam: We are working on it. Have patience.
well the "admin" pm spam has stopped so far at least. Not so much we can do about random spammers posting on the forum. At least they seem to be contained to the bound forum (not sure why) and we'll delete (or modify) any offending posts asap :)
