You're overlooking its successor, Big Sister.
Mmm... Showlder... why was that not the 9-minute one?

Re: ambient underworld

"Van Halen, Van Halen, Rock Guitar Band" is 14 minutes, but I don't know if it's a "good song," per se. It's certainly different.

Ah, that reminds me, the whole "Beautiful Burnout Artjam" soundtrack is ambient.

Edit: Found a few more:

Kippers
Choppo
Simple Distinctive
Simple Peal
several of the Phonestraps

...wait a sec...
do you have a copy of Van Halen????

I've been after a copy of that for YEARS

it's the thing where Karl talks about seeing a beautiful photograph with a dead rat on it, and a bit about 'pressure drop' right?

That'd be pretty much all the B-sides/Non-album titles. I don't know if I worded this right or not, but not to include remixes of album tracks.

Yes and no. And yes. Yes, because the audio was broadcast for the Beautiful Burnout Artjam (available on the RTSR Tracker). No, because there's no video. Yes, because I kind of have the video. Incomplete, which I shot from the movie screen with my camcorder at the Oblivion Ball. I'll release it some day. Also, some of the video was broadcast during one of the Radio Shows (June 2008, IIRC).

Nope. It's the one about a cross-country road trip across America, with the Macintalk Victoria voice narrating.

I have a portion of the VHVH video from the tomato 2 cdrom spliced in with some other bits. It also includes a snippet from derive. Is this something I could post on RSTR or would it be considered copyrighted? Waiting for the videos section on underworldlive or the store to offer up some of these so they can be seen/ purchased. Would love to see the whole thing!

The rat thing is from the cross border festival (I think) but has a lot of the same spoken word bits in Karl's voice from VHVH.

Interesting. What's "derive"?

That video also has the "Bungalow with Stairs" intro they used on the 2009 tour (also on Tomato 3), as well as bits from Bungalow with Stairs .001. Too bad the video's like 8-bit, and the audio is mono.

THIS. I never get tired of Banstyle's sunshine-splashed ambience, and the perfect segue into the hazier, cooler Sappy's Curry. So good!

Also up there: Tongue, Best Mamgu Ever, Puppies, Stagger, Beautiful Burnout and Air Towel (do the last two count as ambient? Hmm.)

Derive is the blue on blue on white with the makintosh spoken word on top. The full version is available on Tomato's Onyx Pearls DVD. I can loop it for hours and paired with VHVH audio is a great ambient spoken word session.

My favorite ambient stuff is the dvd-rom tracks for "Everything, Everything"

Theres a ambient version of Banstyle, Dark and Long (this isn't really that ambient), Jumbo (my fav), and Oich Oich.

All the tracks are between 2:30-3:00 long.

I remember discussing this when it first came out.

You can take the files right from the dvd-rom (in your computer).

Check it out and enjoy some of best UW tracks - ambient style

I am happy that I am not the only one who discovered them...!
They're really great versions and as far as I remember the Dark Train version is 8 minutes long (all other tracks 2:30-3:00)!

Actually Dark Train [9:06] is on there, but it is not clustered with the ambient tracks. It is its own thing. Dark and Long is in the ambient collection [2:39]. ;)

Re: ambient underworld

...so I read through the tracks and was surprised no one mentioned these excellent tracks:

Jam Scraper - From the Mmm...Skyscraper I Love You Single

Please Help Me - From the Push Upstairs Single

Peach Tree - From the Crocodile Single

Born Slippy (Down Version) - Born Slippy 2003 Single

and also if you haven't heard, it's pretty good by Warb - Born Sleepy.

Re: ambient underworld

how the fuck is Jam Scraper ambient? how the fuck is Oich Oich ambient. i think some people need to investigate what 'ambient' means. here's a clue. if it's 126 bpm with a straight kick drum through most of the track, it's not ambient. plinky plonky intros ≠ ambient.

that's open for interpretation. when you sum it all up regardless of bpm, it's all electronic music. what's ambient to one person differs from another.

just enjoy the music!

BrotherLovesDub 02-15-2010 12:36 PM

Re: ambient underworld

Jam Scraper has layers of percussion and an acid line. It's not open for interpretation. It's in no way ambient.

truth be told Dub Jam isn't too ambient. I didn't actually mean to post that on this here part of the forum neither. :)

Agreed. As per Brian Eno, "Mr. Ambient" himself:
"Ambient Music is intended to induce calm and a space to think." - 1978

That's a pretty broad definition. Good! Music should never be restrictive or restricted.

Excellent article, BLD...definitely raises the issues of subgenres and overuse of the term. But still, i'm not sure i like rules for what qualifies as this or that style of music (i'm fondly remembering a discussion we had on here where i tried to convince Stimpee that UW had elements of Progressive Rock!)...for every "rule" there's an exception, and bands like UW that are adept at perfoning a lot of styles of music, it's even harder to classify.

When i was younger, "ambient" meant New Age and World Music I heard on public radio and my dad's Windham Hill records. More recently, i might have considered beatless tracks to be the definition. Then i learned about drone, soundscapes, noise, lo-fi, electroacoustic, blah blah etc...

I also agree that acid squelches or somewhat fast beats might not be calming or space-inducing to most, but i can see how a steady tempo and repeated loops can be hypnotic and comforting in their regularity. Is that ambient? For some.

For me, the most "ambient" Underworld compositions are several tracks on "Breaking & Entering" OST and the "I'm a Big Sister..." Riverrun EP. Not sure I'd call anything on their studio albums ambient. A number ofthe aforementioned Dark and Long mixes and B-sides, maybe.

BrotherLovesDub 02-15-2010 06:17 PM

Re: ambient underworld

Plastickman's Consumed album is full of steady kick drums but is very ambient, in my opinion. Steady kicks alone wouldn't disqualify a song from being ambient, but if we're going to have a thread for Ambient Underworld and people are including Jam Scraper and Oich Oich, what's to stop someone from listing Jumbo or Minneapolis as ambient?
