They put a very high signal in certain parts of the song that you can't hear when played at normal speed, but when the song is slowed down, you can hear it. So they could put in a word every, say, 15 seconds: "CD...182" or something, and you wouldn't be able to hear it unless you slowed down the recording. Then just go back and see who it was they game promo CD 182 out to.

Has Underworld been able to track the people responsible for selling the promos on Ebay?

Will the album and the alternate album in the box set be watermarked? I won't share the music on any file sharing programs (I don't do that), but if I want to send some songs to somebody so that they can hear them, it'd be nice to know it isn't watermarked. I'd only share some songs with some people on IM programs, you know, as to show them songs from an artist I like.

It's only the advance promos that are watermarked, so that if it were leaked online, they could track down who the copy was given to.

Besides if the regular album were watermarked, how could they ever track it to you? They don't know who bought which copy from which retail store. The promos though, they keep records of which watermarked copy they sent to whom.
