who in their right mind looks forward to b-sides? there's a reason why they'll be b-sides....i mean, does anyone actually like "hot acid rhythm" or "freak of the week"?

Hi, bro, long time no see, hope you allright;)

Well I personally love the b sides from Push period like Spring and Swipper.
You are right - freak didnt get me, thats true, and its even EBW maybe 4? and the sound is not that cool.

Beside that I love EBW series, I dont like EBW 4 and 5 (Freak, It Began...)

And EBW 9 is also great, its even better than 8, I would like to see 9 released on album instead of 8.

this album is a bit of a letdown.
but, theyre getting older. and if theyve stopped doing drugs, then it kinda makes sense. they want their loyal fans to hold tight with em' through their voyage thru their musical maturity.
one thing i do know, is that we'll be graced with Chemical Brothers music for another 10 years.
they may take the plunge that UW did, and start doing soundtracks, either to movies or video games, ala NIN.
their live ' performances ' are the spectacle i am waiting for, as i, in North America, arent so lucky to see them live as much as you blokes.

tho, i hope i can share a beer with them again when they come here.
that would make me 2 for 2.
better than Manchester United, eh ?:p

i dunno about the other one but 'freak of the week' singlehandedly destroys just about anything they've done since then.
i really love that tack, but i can see how it doesnt sit right with the rest of surrender.
b-sides are generally the gems that were too different to sit coherently with the rest of the album or they were to coward to try to make it fit. so it gets put on the singles because they're quality tunes regardless.
so b-sides are really where you see the more experimental or different side of them, and are often pretty damn rewarding.
so i'd ask who in their right mind doesn't look forward to the b-sides if they like the album?

regarding freak of the week...
by far one of my favorite chemies songs, b side or not. its fun, and the breakbeat percussion at the end is a dj's dream to mix this into a mix.
how it never made it onto any of their albums is mindboggling to me.
but then again, b sides hold their own ground, and this song is SOLID.

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

Rize Up, Spring, and Giant were actual pretty good b-sides from PTB.

The sides from Come With Us were very disappointing. Base 6 was kind of cool. But still pretty generic sounding.

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

Do It Again, Burst Generator and We Are the Night, IMO are the only listenable tracks on this album. I think ive given it its fair share of listens too. kinda sad really.

dubman 06-02-2007 11:48 AM

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

yeah, i played this one a lot more than i would have, so i thought i might be coming around to it, but that was probaly because this is infinitely better than push the button, althought that doesn't say anything.

we are the night
saturate
pills wont help you now
burst generator

are the only tracks worth repeat listens, and even generator seems like a stretch. the main reason why i like the last track is because it seems to describe a pretty hopeless and uncontrolled situation in this warm summer fuzzy track with nice drums and all. i just like it.

so yeah i guess liking 4 tracks is a drastic improvement over the last album, but that this point it's kind of humoring my history with the band rather than listening to them out of quality.

are they gonna do a 'remixed version of this like 'push the button' because i preffered that to the original album...??

Do you mean "Flip the Switch"? That was by independent producers, uncertain if they had the Chems blessing, though it was a free album (same with their remixes of the last Prodigy and LCD Soundsystem albums). If so, i agree, i liked a lot of the remixes more than the originals...the "Surface to Air" remix mashed up "1979" by the Smashing Pumpkins with "Across the Universe" by the Beatles, with a great new female vocalist. It was delightful!

You know, i've been thinking about what's been said here about the Brothers maturing and maybe getting more technical/polished and less inspired. Admittedly, listening to the first two LPs, you can tell there are lots of tweaked samples and effects that give them both a very rough, energetic edge, whereas from Surrender on, the sounds have been more "programmed" and glossy (mostly). I remember an interview with Ed Simons when Surrender came out, saying they were trying to make more crafted, integrated songs rather than layering crazy samples. In this techno-savvy age, it's probably right that the boys have taken steps to use their studio toys...after all, rough, bedroom techno is fun for a while, but no one expects a big act to stay lo-tech. It's just a shame that with the new slick sound has gone some of the excitement and innovation (i.e. Push the Button was largely blahh in my opinion, and i'm not yet feeling "Do it Again".) I was hoping that We are the Night rocked in the vein of Dig Your Own Hole or the first half of Come With Us, but looks like folks aren't feeling it here. maybe it's a grower...i'll have to wait and see!

I have to say I am mostly bored by this album...and I actually like Push the Button.

I like All Rights Reversed and Saturate (a cut down Electronic Battle Weapon)...but the rest is inconsequential IMHO...so far.

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

For those in the UK, Radio 1 have been playing a different version of "Do It Again"

The vocal sample is actually different to the short promo version (does it swear on the album version and promo versions or something??). I can't actually make out what it says anyway..

It appears that half way through the track it skips back to the begginning, it sounds more exciting - i heard the version when zane lowe played it a few weeks ago - but now its on the Radio 1 'A Play List' so all the presenters are playing it...

Update:

I searched the lyrics sites to see what people were saying - here are a couple:

I've seen it pumped electric
I've seen it pumped electric
I've seen it pumped electric etc.

it doesn't make sense, so i don't think thats right...

another one says:

i'll sing the pump electric (x 8)

it also doesn't make sense.. ;)

On the original promo and 'extended' mix of Do It Again he says:

"I see we've gone electric"

On the final mix and myspace player he says:

"Let's turn this thing electric"

hope that helps.;)

This cd has surprised me b/c it's really grown on me the more I hear it.
Now I like "All Rights Reserved", "the Pills Won't Help You", and even "Battle Scars"....go figure!

Great cd, you've just got to kinda play it until you know it and can hum/sing along.

For instance, when the first electronic ("War of the Worlds") sound comes on in track 1, you can instantly in your head go "Theres no path to foll-oooow" even though those "vocals" slowly fade in later.:)

if i ever like this album it means that i need to do two things:

take a breather from 2007 and start listening to all the other things i loved from previous years a LOT moe often so that i can see this album is obviously shit

dig deeper in 2007 because i'm sure there's an army of albums that put this lukewarm crap to shame.

but since i do both and still dont think this album is any good i think i'm ok...

I got the Japanese promo delivered today - it has 2 extra 'bonus' tracks..

No Need

Has a very early dust brothers sound to start with, then a long slow driving bassline comes in, with the trademark vocal sample repeated 'theres no need to rush' at every few bars..

Lots of squeaks and funny sounds in this, almost sounds as though they should get the Scissor Sisters to sing over this one :)

Nice track! 8 points.

Seal

Boing, bling, bang, boring, b-side.

It difficult to explain, it is mellow, and has the usual airy high pitched vocals that most of the ambient tracks have. It has a nice soft cultural drum beat throughout, i would inmaging i would hear this in one of them crystal and incence stick shops.

:) Not sure i will be playing this one much. 5 points.

Oh yeah,

I caught the Chemical Brothers on BBC Three at Glastonbury..

You can download the .WMV video here [55mb]

Do It Again was amazing, the visuals were fantastic and, quite frankly, i don't care about the technical crap, or if its rehearsed, improvised or not - they put on a fantastic theatre when they play live - it just gets better and better...

In fact, since Underworld stopped using the Tomato visual screens back in 1999 / 2000, i prefer the whole look of the Chemcial Brothers shows - they have created create a huge sense of atmosphere and energy..

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

So i just listened to the new album and, well, just as many said above, it's not pretty to my ears.
There are a few tracks with some promise (great builds and sounds on "Burst generator"; "Saturate" a.k.a. electronic battle weapon 8 or 9 is pretty fresh), but too too many retreads of their back catalog. For example, the track "We are the Night" sounds very similar to the end part of "Sunshine Underground" and even includes sounds i know i've heard from Surrender's B-sides. "Do it again" is like a watered down "get Yourself High". the closing track, "Battle Scars", with it's vaguely Johnny Cash vocal and theme, is an uninteresting revisit to "The Golden Path". And then, there's "The Salmon Dance"... the vocal sounds like when they showed breakdancers and rappers on Sesame Street in 1983. Unfunny and embarrassing. i kept thinking of when Moby interviewed Mr. Fish on his 18 B-Sides DVD. This, too, should have been an outtake. The album opens and closes wih no fanfare, unlike all their previous albums that came out swinging and ended with a jubilant end-of-nighter anthem. Maybe a third of this record is catchy, but nothing groundbreaking or exciting, and- too many fast-forward-inducing moments.
i wished it wasn't the case, but yeah, downward spiral from "Come With Us".

monkey mafia were a superb live band, shame the album didn't have the same energy. sounds dated now, but back in the day, it did have a charm of its own.

kinda lost interest in the chems after surrender, sure they still produced a few quality singles, but i always preferred their mix albums anyway. 'brothers gonna work it out' and 'live at teh social' still rock

It's better than Push the Button, but worse than Come With Us (great album, damnit!). Some bits in the middle I like quite a bit, and overall, it's put together pretty well. Other parts are rather questionable (like The Salmon Dance). Maybe 3 stars. So I guess I sorta like it.

Go on. Tear me to bits.

I'm seriously hoping this Lp will grow on me, esp. as i haven't heard all the tracks (some apparently not on their myspace page).

But "growing on me" and new Chemical Brothers LP were never synonymous prior to "Push the Button".
