Hey all. Just got home from my first Underworld gig ever (waited a decade!) and I was blown away. I'll do a proper review and whatnot tomorrow (I think we have some video of the New Year midnight celebration with Born Slippy) but for now here's the setlist. I'm not completely up to date with some of the newer pieces so I'm a bit hazy in a couple parts. If you were there and can straighten this out, please do!

Crocodile
Spoonman/Rez
Cowgirl/Rez
Beautiful Burnout
(Sydney Poem)
Instrumental piece which led into....
Rowla (pretty sure....can't quite recall so I may be off)
Pearls Girl
Jumbo
Born Slippy .NUXX (end bits had something mixed in)
Push Upstairs
You Do Scribble (????? really not sure on this one at ALL)
Two Months Off
Spikee
King Of Snake
Moaner

Great gig!

(And I'm new here. Hello)

I love the way Underworld were able to schedule the count down into the new year, because it would not have been easy to complete the performance of jumbo to within 30 seconds of midnight, but this was delivered with style ... then a pause where all receded to let the moment take take its time in the spotlight...and with the festivities on their way, Underworld then broke into an awesome set to welcome in the first hour of 2009. As a fan who has waited since 1995 to see Underworld live, it was an emotional experience. By the way, the coloured tubes made for one of the most interesting set designs of any performance I've seen. Great work guys, it was like a living, breathing art installation with soul. Keith

Wow. What an awesome setlist.

I cant wait to see them play on Saturday. I can only hope their set is something like that ... fingers crossed I get to hear Spikee

Here's the full setlist:

Crocodile
Spoonman
Cowgirl/Rez
Beautiful Burnout
- Sydney Poem -
Rowla
Pearl's Girl
Jumbo (short sort of single version to play up to 30 secs from midnight!)

[as last 30 secs countdown opening strain of New Train was played but faded out with 10secs remaining]

Midnight and fireworks go off mentally behind the stage and Underworld start off the new year with the famous opening melody of..

Born Slippy NUXX/2003
Push Upstairs (Great longer version than what has been played recently live)
Small Conker And A Twix/You Do Scribble (really mental version that took a lot of people by surprise i think)
- sample intro -
Two Months Off
- air raid siren -
Spikee (A FULL BLOODY 10 MIN VERSION OF SPIKEE!!! It was at this point that I wet myself with excitement and fully believed that they read my earlier request post) :)
Shudder/King Of Snake
Moaner

It was a spectacular show and the great inclusion of a lot of older and new tunes balanced the set perfectly. PLUS we were treated to TWO hours and not the original 1 1/2 hours they were down to play because Eric Prydz cancelled...which was perfect. Hope the same happens on Saturday at the Gold Coast.

PS luminary do you wanna meet up on Saturday? I'm heading up by myself you see and i've not been to the Gold Coast before, would be good to hook up with some fellow dirts.

I was quite pissed but still managed to do a sterling job on being a trainspotter and texting myself the setlist! Can you say..."NERD"?

I had a scrap of paper!

As awesome as it was last night, I really wish I didn't have to put up with that douchey crowd to see Underworld. Luckily we found a spot away from a lot of people right up the front.

not my video, but here's the midnight countdown with NUXX (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=zdP7TI05tdM).

That looked like it was fuckin mental, what an unreal way to bring in 2000 and 9. I thought the vocal was lost in the noise but the three minute build up was still there. Awesome stuff.

Awesome! Thanks for this! That's about as epic a concert moment as we'll see! Reminds me a bit of Orbital playing "Chime" as the clock struck midnight on 1/1/00. Just perfect.

And a 10-minute Spikee? What a treat for you folks in attendance!

I wrote a review on my site (http://www.a-reminder.org/music/?p=1249).

And I don't remember the vocals to Born Slippy being lost in the noise...Karl didn't start singing until the fireworks were over if I recall.

Yeah you're correct, Karl didn't start singing till well after the fireworks.

Wow! That was an amazing and perfect performance! Not much else to say. I particularly loved the version of Push Upstairs. The visuals and lighting were awesome and well matched the music. Karl's mic camera was very cool. I'm so glad we were able to get two hours (due to Prydz dropping out).

The only negative was most of the crowd, who generally had no clue and kind of got in the way a bit! Seemed like they would have been just as happy listening to anything really. But a guy walked past, wished me happy new year and told me that I was one of the few who really knew what was going on. Not sure how he worked that out, but still it was good to meet someone there who also understood Underworld.

Now I'm back home in Perth and will see them again on Sunday!

this link below is far better quality [rec with HD digicam], better audio too, and it's 10 mins long. have to confess i had something to do with it, but i've also put up high definition full length vids of king of snake and two months off, and yes i've got spikee and the rest, will upload them all for the benefit of everyone over the next few days/weeks. [takes ages cos so many MB]. :D

I told my parents that all my favorite bands were probably playing at awesome parties on NYE...
How come they can make room to broadcast Fergie, but not this?

you bet; born slippy nuxx at midnight - totally inspired.
i have pretty well got the whole gig on vid, but it'll take some days and weeks to upload. king of snake took 13.5 painful hrs to upload [646MB]. i'm awaiting a new modem/faster line but australia's broadband is notoriously slow. last night i tried to upload rowla and after 15 hrs i discovered it had failed:confused: i'm gettin flak from the missus for occupying the internet too much, and also there's another gig i need to upload:(

Wow. That's the perfect new years.

I couldn't agree more! Right on zero second, you get the iconic "jang...jung" and the blast of intense yellow light. I should have cashed in the last of my diminishing finances and travelled south to witness this - my life would have been then complete.

Is it possible that Underworld may release this as a live set on their website?

I think that's the only way that this gig could have possibly been any more amazing....failing that, a bootleg would be nice :D

foxtrotoscar, i don't mean to sound like a pain, but the Born Slippy vid won't download. Says there's an error. I know it'd be a pain but would there be any chance of you re-uploading it to HD on youtube?

comes up with error: HTTP/1.1 404 not found

Is there anywhere you can download the whole gig in one big file? I'd really like to pull the music from it so I can make a music cd.

That would be great but i think it takes Foxtrotoscar quite a while to upload the vids.

How about just ripping the audio into one long file from the original vid and uploading that, it would probably be less than 150mb once encoded into mp3 or flac.

Gees, I don't ask for much do I :D

thanks for comments. sh*t! i have unfortunately run into some problems, imac crashed, exthard drive backup failed, waiting and hoping that mac repairer can fix it with vids intact. in meantime will put born slippy up in HD on a diff computer as i still have it on my camera [will be in 2 clips: one on the end of Jumbo, the other on its own to follow]. don't know how to join them without compressing/losing significant MBytes, i only have imovie. i just hope the imac is ok otherwise we wont see spoonman, beaut burnout, pushupstairs, and small conk.twix.scribble. not happy!
all the tracks are/were 10min recordings on a HD digicam [sony t500], am not very technically savvy bout making dvd/audio files etc but will seek advice if/when i get them back!

Absolutely phenomenal! There's so many amazing visuals to accompany the music, and for the first time (unless you count Everything, Everything as a full gig) I can see what an entire performance by UW looks like to somebody who was there. Every song has its own unique identifier: the way the static crystals of Small Conker & A Twix explode into the dancing lights of YDS, the countdown timer that becomes part of an endless stream of meaningless symbols in Pearl's Girl, or the silhouette-turned visual of Moaner. Lovely!
