View Full Version : Sons And Daughters
I had the good grace to discover this band on my way home from Glastonbury (luckily still got T In The Park & Leeds pencilled in to see them). The track Johnny Cash by them is right at the end of a new Optimo Mix called Psyche Out (http://www.optimo.co.uk/psyche%20out.htm) which is absolutely lush (I'll post on it when I can). Now I hate Arab Strap, mostly because of the way they think that singing in a Scottish accent is cool, but this mob manage to pull it off pretty well. It's still early, but my first instinct is that Sons And Daughters are the best Glasgow band out right now (yes better than Franz Ferdinand).

They're onto their second album The Repulsion Box which they're touring right now so I'll come back with a judgement on them live post T In The Park. The first album Love The Cup has some utter gems on it, the best of which has to be Johnny Cash which is a monster of a track - driving rhythm, melodic/harmonic "screaming".. it fit pretty well with the state of mind I found myself in at 6am Monday morning at Glastonbury (having sat with an Aussie I didn't know listening to the Optimo mix), I think that's part of the reason I've fallen for them. But make no mistake, this band are good. Next single is Dance Me In which follows in the indie vein without being as boring as indie tends to be. Check 'em.. unless you're Malt Refund and bring old prejudices with you..

I saw them supporting the Delgados a while back (incidentally: bit of shame the Delgados chucked it but I suppose it was coming). I had no idea who they were but I really liked them a lot - I'll look out for this lot, I thought.
Fast forward to a couple of weekends ago. I'd heard Dance Me In and was hoping to see them again, and lo and behold they were coming to The Archer in Newcastle (which is a very small, metal-centric venue with good pool tables underneath a life insurance building). Except I would be in Prague at the time.
Bollocks.
So yes, they're good aren't they?

Took me bloody ages to find The Archer, not very obvious and is the least likely looking pub i've ever been to.

Sons and daughters. fucking well dodgy aussie soap opera that my mum was hooked on. i used to watch it when i came home from school...
Love is very strange, it can come and go, it can happen when you are young or old,
When it comes, it comes from nowhere, when it comes, it changes your life.
Son's and daughters, love and laughter, tears and sadness and happiness,
We will find out, our son's and daughters, are what, we too, we're once about.
Love can happen now, and it happened then, wondered at the time what love really meant.
When it came, it came from nowhere. when it came, it altered my life.
Son's and daughters, love and laughter, tears and sadness and happiness,
We will find out, our son's and daughters, are what, we too, we're once about.
Son's and daughters, love and laughter, tears and sadness and happiness
etc ad infinitum until suicide.

gee whizz stimps!!!!!
What a tune.... will try and remix this!!!!
Ok....
Mrs Jessop - next door neighbour to Dave and Grace Sullivan was the actress who was Nell Mangle in "Neighbours".
Kitty was the daughter. Uncle Harry was a dodgy geezer with a moustache.
Any more characters?

I love how they got confused between words that rhyme and words that just share a sequence of letter.
Should've gone for "Sons and daughters / Tears and snotters / Don't have children, they're horrible."
I get mixed up between this and "The Sullivans". Which one had the sepia photo intro credits?
T In The Park performance review:
http://www.roomthirteen.com/cgi-bin/tour_set.cgi?SetID=1913
With the rise in popularity, soon come other problems. Moving to a bigger tent but to an earlier daytime slot, Sons and Daughters found themselves playing an afternoon set that wasn't really made for their dark country vibes. Coupled with a building level of expectation, it may have been reasonable to assume a level of pressure was being applied to the young Scots act.
Thankfully, with tracks like opener 'Medicine' up their sleeve, the band was quickly winning over any doubters or curious onlookers. Largely concentrating on promoting new album 'The Repulsion Box', their brand of infectious country shuffle filled the tent and swept the partisan crowd into a frenzy.
As often happens at festivals, the sound levels can be of variable quality and it wasn't the clearest that Sons and Daughters have ever came across. However the crowd were constantly engaged with handclaps and finger snaps and the continual interplay between Scott Paterson and Adele Bethel kept the audience at the bands beck and call.
Forthcoming single 'Taste The Last Girl' was warmly received with its Smiths-esque guitar lead and jaggy vocals and should hopefully build on 'Dance Me In', which scraped into the top 40. Ending with a former b-side and album track 'Hunt' the band showed they have quality in depth and look set to continue their rise. Depending on schedules, it would not be a surprise to see this act on an outdoor stage at next year's T in The Park.
They absolutely rocked that tent man. As described above, sound problems aplenty (mostly due to some of the most amateurish tech work I've ever heard; in Johnny Cash, Adele the female vocalist drops a line or two in suddenly at a couple of parts, and with each of these the sound guys totally missed the boat), but cracking performance - full of energy and feeling. Had me hooked.

Hey dont interrupt our Aussie soap thread with your gig review rubbish! ;)
i think the sepia photo intro was indeed Sons & Daughters. I also remember seeing Stefan Dennis (paul in neighbours) as some bad guy son in this. but i fear this is way too long ago for Tom/Sola/Jarrod to give us the aussie dirt on this.
Can someone delete Stimpee's waste of a post?
