can anybody identify the various fonts used by Underworld, esp. the new style (Tokyo, RRP 12"s, OwB)?

Tokyo and RiverRuns might be Plantin (http://www.identifont.com/find?font=Plantin&q=Go).
edit: The OwB cover could be some kind of Garamond.

Identifont.com is great, you can even identify a font by appearance (http://www.identifont.com/identify.html).

thanks Jan, that's a great site. Plantin does look like the same font as Tokyo.

The Beaucoup Fish and Everything Everything era is a font called Zurich.

This is the new "official" logo at the moment:

http://uwlive.rowla.com/img/underworldlogo_smallgif.gif

I beleive it uses a slightly re-drawn/thickened Times New Roman, ive tried to duplicate it and it is difficult, but the letter shapes and feet are exactly the same. The spacing/merging of the letters appear to be the most important thing.

The RiverRun vinyls are straight-up Plantin. It's an exact match.

Live in Tokyo is Adobe Garamond (not Garamond).

The logo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Underworldlogo.png) though, is a lot harder. I haven't been able to make a match yet. It's not Times/Times New Roman though, nor is it Garamond. Times is close, but the serifs are too straight on the n d and r. Garamond's W has four upper terminals, which is just wrong.

If you mean this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/f/fc/Uw-live_tokyo_covera.jpg/200px-Uw-live_tokyo_covera.jpg) by Live in Tokyo then that's Plantin and not Adobe Garamond.
edit: I agree with Mike on Times New Roman for the logo. The Windows font is just not optimised for large font sizes.

Nope, and nope.

It IS Adobe Garamond. And Times New Roman is close, but the serifs aren't right.

From the videos I saw from underworldlive when they performed Cocoon Club, it looked as though they used Bookman Old Style for those visuals.

We are both right.
"Underworl d;" is Adobe Garamond.
"TOKYO 25TH N ovembe r" is Plantin.

Wow, I've never thought that a topic, that seems so simple at first glance, could be so fascinating. :)

lol, lloyd.

Sorry about that, Jan. I never looked past "Underworld". I just figured the rest of the cover was the same font. :) Thanks for checking it.

So, how about these fonts...

"Underworld;" (and probably "OBLIVION", too) is Fournier MT Regular
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/fournier-mt/regular/

"with Bells" is Fournier MT Italic
http://www.myfonts.com/fonts/linotype/fournier-mt/italic/

TheBang

Yeah, I got Fournier MT for those also. Which is still very different from main (and as yet, unidentified) main logo font.

OK, how about this one? It's the font they used on the T-shirts on sale during the tour also:

For the Book of Jam, a lot of the fonts are still Fournier MT, but the "Book of Jam;" logo itself is Didot HTF 96 Bold (excepting the huge "Jam" on the first issue, which is different (perhaps custom?)).

So, whats the latest "barking era" font then?

TheBang

Some type of stencil font (obviously), but I haven't been able to match the exact typeface yet.

The closest I've found are P22 Pop Art Stencil or URW Bodoni Stencil Bold, but neither is an exact match.

i think the new font (same used in athens) is an abstraction of another font.

the 'g' and 'U' shapes are guidelines. try identifont (www.identifont.com). i believe it might be a classic roman, serif font.

You think it's a new stencil based on a non-stencil font? Maybe, but I couldn't quite come up with a match that way either. Closest I've found for non-stencil fonts is ShinnType Walburn Ultra, but R and S serifs aren't right, and the circles in the O and D are wrong.

ThingInABook

and i want to be even more far-fetched: i think the font comes from a blackletter kind or even a relative of an old english.

but after trying to find the font last night i saw the shapes and they're totally roman fonts.

emigre did a re-image of some clasic fonts too. it's not a uncommon thing to see in type foundries.

Nah, i think john warwicker prefers to use actual fonts, based on the fact that he has a deep appreciation for them... plus i have a hunch he is a bit lazy ;)

we continue :P

maybe it's a bodoni relative? g, D, U, y are extremely similar. i'm comparing the ;dgboy writting with bodoni family... there's such thing as bodoni stencil?

poster bodoni for life!

TheBang

I thought Bodoni was really close too. I was only able to find Bodoni Stencil Bold though. I think a "non-Bold" would be really, really close.

Bodoni Stencil Regular? The R doesnt look quite right on this one...

http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/singles/wiescher/bodoni_classic_stencil_regular/ ?

(the 'b' isn't right either...)

ThingInABook
06-18-2010, 06:21 AM
neither the 'g' shape...

i looked the bold/black ones. but the 'g' is made of parallel/simetrical shapes in the ;dgboy print.

linotype has the whole bodoni family and it's possible to try some output text.

The closest i've found are the Caslon Stencil fonts:
http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/singles/urw/caslon_stencil/
http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/singles/urw/caslon_stencil_ot_std/

But some of the letters arent right. The P22 is uppercase only so thats not it.
Bodoni Stencil Bold is quite close:
http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/downloads/urw/bodoni_stencil_bold_ot_std/

as is the regular Bodoni Stencil
http://www.fontshop.com/fonts/downloads/urw/bodoni_stencil/
