Walking around a library today I saw this book, Anatomy of Design by Steven Heller and Mirko Ilic and felt very tempted to buy it despite it's price (51€). Now at home I checked amazon and it's half the price, so order's been already sent.

It's an amazing clinic view about design patterns without getting too aseptic and it has made me feel (again) in the mood of trying with design programs beyond Photoshop.

I know there are good and talented people into 2D/3D art and design and I would really appreciate any tips on the programs you use.

I actually like Flash as a vector graphics tool - much eaiser than Illustrator. Also check out inkscape (open source) and xara (free linux version).

I also feel obligated to mention how much I hate the gimp.

I'm pretty good with After Effects, Photoshop etc... :)
To be honest I don't consider myself to be a very good designer per se, but I can make stuff that looks good (and pleases the clients!) anyway.
