Wireless stereo.

Situation: New apartment. Computer in second bedroom. Massive amount of MP3s. No home stereo. No burner, no desire to buy a burner. New wireless network already being piped out to the living room for Xbox live.

Desire: Music in living room.

Solution? Wireless stereo. Linksys makes one. Ideally all I want is a portable stereo that'll let me access MP3s on my computer with decent sound and a minimum of fuss.

Variables? Would I just be better served upgrading my ipod to the new model and plugging it into a stereo?

Any advice and/or war stories appreciated.

it sounds like you have an ?amp/receiver? and an ipod (what model ipod do you have?). if so... problem solved. run a 1/8 in. to stereo RCA cable between the two. this is what i do with my beat up 1st gen. 10 gb ipod. works like a charm. i just rotate the playlists on my powerbook every few days, or when i get a whim to hear something in particular that's not already loaded up. takes about as long as digging through ten shelves of CDs, so it's not really any more time consuming with all the unplugging/plugging/loading, etc.

i plan on getting apple's airport express soon, primarliy for the airtunes feature w/ optical out.

My solution to playing MP3s has been to get a little USB optical output on my computer and plugging it into my minidisk deck input (you can get these pretty cheap now). This is a very cheap way of getting 'perfect' (or as perfect as the MD will go) sound quality out of a computer, but I suppose that it depends how much money you want to spend.

oh, you want a standalone unit.

all the models i've come across leave much to be desired (i.e. they all have tiny, poor quality speakers/sound). you'd be better off buying an amp and a decent pair of "home stereo" speakers.

Airport Express or equiv and some powered speakers, or just your iPod and powered speakers.

I use my Airport Express and it's cool most of the time, although prone to drop out if the wireless conditions aren't great (I suspect that might be partially be due to my Mac only having the 802.11b Airport, rather than Airport Extreme).
