The other day a friend of mine was talking about an anime he had seen years ago that he had been looking for ever since, and I realized he was talking about Battle Angel (aka Battle Angel Alita, aka Gunnm) which is, I should say based on, one of the coolest sci-fi action stories ever. The anime was okay but the manga (comic book) was just kickass. So I told him just that, and then suddenly recalled a dim memory of having heard there was maybe a movie about it in the works. A couple days later I randomly stumbled across the following information: James Cameron is breaking his long silence to make Battle Angel into a huge blockbuster movie. I guess the latest info is that there have been hangups with the script and he might finish an unnamed parallel project first, but he definitely still plans on making Battle Angel. The title character is to be played by a real actress and then replaced with a CG character, a la Gollum. He's also all excited about making it in 3D, for some reason.

Now, I'm not a big fan of Titanic, but there is no denying that when it comes to sci-fi action movies, nobody can do it better than James Cameron. Not only that, but he has a knack for really amazing action heroines. (Sarah Connor, anyone? ELLEN RIPLEY?) He's also kind of a perfectionist and has yet to make a movie with even one bad special effect. (I also see script delays as a sign that he's not going to settle for a bad script.) I seriously couldn't think of a better dude to make this awesome comic book into a worthy movie. So... I'm suddenly very excited about this.

The only thing that throws me off is this 3D idea. 3D movies are stupid. I don't want to have to wear special glasses to finally see a good Battle Angel movie. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, I guess, but I'd be a lot more comfortable with good old 2D. Maybe when it comes out on DVD it'll have a "normal" setting.

James Cameron is the man because he's an ass hole. He expects rediculous perfection from the people he works with. That's one reason why his films turn out very good.

I think you're on to something there...

Sounds cool. I just want to point out though, that it was Ridley Scott who brought Ripley to life. ;)

This article says Cameron might do something called 'Project 880' before Battle Angel. It also talks about the 3-D process, which seem to be a bit more advance than red and blue glasses, although I didn't really understnad how it works.

Sounds cool. I just want to point out though, that it was Ridley Scott who brought Ripley to life. ;)Trivia! Firstly, I'd give most of the credit to Sigourney Weaver, one of the best actresses ever. Secondly, she was a hell of a lot more interesting in the second movie... she even earned an Oscar nomination. In Alien, she was your typical horror heroine screaming and running around in her underwear. I think James Cameron deserves a lot of credit for seeing greater potential.
(Not to say Ridley Scott isn't awesome!)
