View Full Version : Ableton: new website, announcement for Live 6
Some of this stuff sounds interesting. They continue to expand the features...effects racks could be useful.

what's the website and when's the new version coming out?
I've been putting off buying Traktor 3, b/c I'm thinking I should just make the jump over to Ableton...
what does anyone think?
I'm a big fan of Ableton, but I've never tried Traktor. My uninformed impression is that Traktor is better at what it does, but that Traktor is far more limited. So it really depends on what you want to do. Live is pretty freakin' versatile.

i highly recomend Abletron. Its an amazing program that gets better and better with every release. I now use it as my main sequencer. In fact we produced two albums last year using nothing but ableton, vsts and plugins.

joe, i've used both Abelton and Traktor 3. Both have a learning curve. Traktor is much harder to use to mix with than Abelton, which is extremely easy to make dj mixes with. no talent required, just good songs. Traktor on the other hand, requires some manouvering and nudging, just like actual DJing. i'd say go for Abelton, just for the flexibility. I never settled into Traktor 3, preferred v.2 tbh. It all depends on what your needs are. I could more easily decide to mix and switch on Traktor to do it, now when i want to mix, i have to launch LIve, find tracks to mix, warp the trax and then start mixing. Kinda kills the spontaneous vibe, but once you have them warped, you too can sound like Sasha (or your other favorite flawless dj)
hell, even Eikman can dj with Live!

let's not start the ableton vs traditional djing discussion again, ok?
it all depends on the way you use it. if you simply want to put two 4/4 tracks together, you can do it *quite* easily with ableton, but once you have a track that is a bit more complex and changes the tempo, you will have a hard time warping it beforehand.
the strength of ableton is that you can basically run endless different loops at the same time, something you can't do with a turntable (and not with traktor either afaik). and here it's when it gets complicated: try to run 3+ tracks at the same time and you will see that even they fit together, it will be all over the place. you really need to know your tracks and set your loop points properly. if your loops are too small you end up sounding like richie hawtin with all bass and claps and no melody, if you want to play whole songs, you might have to turn down a few loops.
just because ableton warps two songs together doesn't mean it sounds flawless. it's not as easy as veryone claims. or maybe i'm just too stupid ;)
