Ok, so here's the deal -

My wife got me a Teenage Engineering "Pocket Operator" (which has an analog audio output), and instead of using a bulky audio interface + my laptop... I'd really rather record audio directly onto my iPhone

(I mean - the whole point of the Pocket Operator... or even having Garageband on an iPhone, is the idea of portability)

I've already tried plugging a 3.5mm Male to Male stereo audio cable into the Pocket Operator, and connected it to my iPhone via the Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter [no luck] -> It was also suggested to record 'video' with it plugged in (with the idea that I'd just strip the audio & toss the video) - but that doesn't work either....

So... what am I missing? Does anyone have any suggestions...

It's just crazy frustrating...

The Lightning connector in iPhones only supports a single mono channel for mic level analog input. If you want a stereo line level input, you have to find something that provides a digital USB audio interface, and connect that to the iPhone with a Lightning to USB adapter.

There are a couple reviews that indicate this works properly with iPhones:

But even something as simple as this should work:

But there's the question of how good the A/D converters are in those devices. I dunno.

Then you just need a Lightning to USB adapter. Either the official Apple one, or similar:
