I think the time will be split between a performance and the seminar referenced in the text.

Wow, that sounds really cool. Nice promo photo.
Free tickets too, but selection will be random:
https://www.amsterdam-dance-event.nl/program/2017/audio-obscura-x-underworld/5151907/

This is the venue, BTW (capacity 2000):
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Rijksmuseum_Amsterdam_-_Passage?uselang=nl
https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/general-information/building-and-presentation/the-passage

The keynote address is actually two days earlier, and it's an hour long. You can't get into that one unless you buy an expensive conference pass:
https://www.amsterdam-dance-event.nl/program/2017/the-world-of-underworld-process-and-co-production/5237101/

So, the concert performance is actually 4 hours, but I imagine that will include an opener and the main set will probably be 2 hours.

Messged the promoter. Opening act TBA soon.

Then this morning this was announced http://www.underworldlive.com/news/2017/10/underworld-ade/

They are the keynote speakers too! Talking through partnership and cocreativity over their career and in the 21st century. Backdropped by Simon Taylor doing visuals using previously unseen stuff from the archives.

Good luck to anyone close enough to try and make it through the ticket lottery!

Karl sorta mentioned the keynote a week ago :p (https://karlhyde.underworldlive.com/2017/09/30/saturday-30th-september/)

The third week of October,
A Wednesday,
We’re gonna organise everything,

I can take four people,
There’s only six of us

So, for the show, the news on UW's site says:

"Before the main event it’s Underworld deconstructed featuring Tom Ravenscroft, so get there for 7pm."

I wonder what that means. Tom spinning UW tunes? Or is this another thing where Rick mans the decks before the show also? Also, I didn't know before that Tom is John Peel's son.

stimpee

I listen to Tom's shows on BBC 6Music every week. He has a great 3 hour show on a Friday evening, and a weekly new music show featuring 1 hour of new music. On the 3 hr show he always has a 20-25min guest mix. Last week it was Forest Swords. All available on the site for a month.

An interview with Karl regarding the festival can be found here (in Dutch, login required):
https://www.parool.nl/ade/karl-hyde-we-gaan-underworld-opnieuw-uitvinden~a4522373/

Interesting parts thru google translate:
"It will be very different from a typical Underworld concert. When we perform at a festival, we have a fixed programme. We have been working on a parallel version of Underworld for a while, which could provide us with a lot of freedom. We're going to improvise, it's a ninety-minute journey, of which we do not know what the end point is. We bring the music to where we and the public want it to go. We're going to reinvent Underworld."

"We have made a global plan, but it is possible that we rethink everything again at the last moment. Everything is live, but it will look more like a dj set than a concert. And it's about the music, the visuals will be modest."

purlieu

Although I dislike the assertion that it's a reinvention instead of 'returning to something closer to what we used to do', that sounds very promising indeed.

I'm off to see the wonderful Public Service Broadcasting this evening, however if anyone can capture anything, would be hugely grateful. It has been a long time since march!

PS any links posted here would be great. I know people like popping stuff on the tracker, but I never ever get any joy with that. Probably user error, but seeds are always an issue too. I debated grabbing the lovingly restored 98/99 ally pally show, but prior experience with the tracker has made me reluctant.

Take most of the instrumentation away and Karl's lyrics and melodies just SOAR. Wow.

The instrumental of this was played out at some of the Surreal Carnival Experiments earlier this year, with different lyrics.

01 Unknown (SCE Tivoli 2017/15/03 "All The Birds") with Between Stars lyrics
02 Unknown
03 Nu Train with Dirty intro
04 Pearl's Girl
05 Mmm Skyscraper, I Love You
06 Rez
07 Downpipe (Dub)
08 Dark and Long
09 Push Upstairs
10 Two Months Off
11 Unknown (Air Towel Version)
12 Unknown (Bamboo Version)
13 Low Burn
14 King of Snake
15 Jumbo
16 Cowgirl
17 NUXX

Clearly rehearsed and pre-planned, but loaded with improvization and new material in most tracks. Visuals were great - no wasted screen, just perfect lights, lasers, and gobo projections surrounding the gallery.

I swear I heard bits or characteristics of Bamboo in the Lenne Penne jam so I'm calling it that. This is now the fourth our fifth distinct song / version of a song with those lyrics now?

Karl sang a snippet of Bruce Lee during track 2 and Diamond Jigsaw in Skyscraper.

This probably sounds really dumb but one of the telling things for me that makes this concert 'different' from their previous ones was that Karl actually sang the "ride the train" bits of Dark Train rather than it just playing from their soundbanks. I can't remember the last time I've seen him do that but the absence of it always sticks out for me and bums me out. I love this somewhat manual, things-may-fuck-up-but-who-cares-cuz-we're-jammin kind of Underworld.

Anyway, this show was a blast, thanks UW crew for sharing it with the world.

If you don't uncheck the option, Facebook automatically converts your live stream to be available on demand once it ends. That's what happened to Underworld's stream, but they didn't mean for it to be available. It was up for a few minutes before they realized it and deleted it. In that short period, I was able to grab a copy of the whole on-demand stream. I'll make it available as soon as I have a chance.

The sad thing about the stream is that Facebook only streams in mono audio. So unbelievably stupid.

I really enjoyed it up until KOS but started to lose interest a bit then as there wasn't a lot new that grabbed me after that. I loved the Lenne Penne 'improv'!
Cowgirl was awful for me, they should've done the usual Cowgirl/rez version so they could add Juanita in! Overall though I really enjoyed it and can't complain as it was free!

Finally after all these years: the return of improv.

Just returned from an absolutely amazing night at the museum. The sound was awful, but what would you expect from a 19th century passage. Some ppl thought it was a drinking night out (that's what you get when you do tickets this way), and Heineken really should rethink handing out bottled beer, because at the time Nuxx hit, we were kneedeep in'm.
But what an absolute killer of a set and brilliant lightshow. Enjoyed the lot, and great that the finally played some Barking stuff again, although highly tweaked. Bummer that the stream is mono, because this set is definitely the new Everything, Everything.

I snagged the raw audio and video from Facebook before they deleted it (why?) and combined it into a single file. I've never done this before, but I'll try to put it up on RTSR once my account is approved unless someone else has already put up a raw (not re-encoded) version.

The video does drop out near the end of King of Snake and picks up again near the beginning of Jumbo. There are definitely some glitches in Jumbo, too. The audio is only 64kbps AAC, but since it is mono, the quality isn't that bad.

Bummer that the stream is mono, because this set is definitely the new Everything, Everything. Yeah I hear ya there. The organisation of the event was disastrous. Still 500 people waiting to get in at 8pm (when they said the doors would close), two different VIP/guest list entrances at either sides of the building. Overzealous security being heavy handed. Ful security grope on entering. Knee deep in heineken bottles and boy was it expensive if you wanted one. Also it was packed at the front. No room to dance. People talking ALL the time. Not many dancing. Loads of people smoking.

Having said all that, I was near the front speakers and it sounded great. Great lighting and lasers also. Also Underworld's performance was spot on and they really looked into it. Props to Tom Ravenscroft for the warm up too. Pity I missed most of Rick's warm up set but we heard Blue Bowler again which was nice. Can't wait for that to get a release.

This.

And the setlist looks pretty similar to the one from their 2016 tour too... (http://uwlive.rowla.com/gigs/view/542) I don't quite get the improv fuss around this gig although I'd be the first advocate for more improv and less pauses between tracks on stage.

jetpig
10-22-2017, 12:51 AM
I've not listened past the first two songs yet, but they can choose songs and improv those songs, no? The bits I've heard definitely FELT different than the last few years, more like 07-09. I guess we will see what they do going forward. Whatever the case, the reception for this set has been phenomenal amd whatever they did differently they should keep doing... differently.

stimpee
10-22-2017, 04:12 AM
Just because they have imrpovised a bit doesnt mean they never had a setlist. But they used to make the setlist every day and it would be similar but not identical.

Is it just me or doesn't a setlist mean the gig wasn't as improvised as it was made out to be? Just saying!

Yeah well, I guess it wasn't improvised on the fly as far as which tracks they played and in what order. But at least it felt more improvised within the tracks, there was some mixing together from one track to the next (although mostly still just a fade in/fade out) and it wasn't just playing straight album versions of everything but actually some interesting re-interpretations (like Between Stars and Air Towel).

So is it back to the old glory days of full improv sets? Certainly not. And if I were Underworld I would mix and mash it up a lot more than they do still, but it sure did feel better and "more Underworld" than most of their sets from the past 10 years.

Underworld

Live @ Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

20.10.2017

Facebook Live stream

01 - Red Earth (with Between Stars lyrics) new track
02 - GWCW (new track)
03 - Dark Train
04 - Pearls Girl
05 - Mmm...Skyscraper, I Love You
06 - Rez
07 - Downpipe (Dub) BIT/INTERLUDE

15 - Jumbo
16 - Cowgirl
17 - Born Slippy . NUXX

We had three separate sources for this but only used two.
All three had the same dropout issues at all the same exact points.
Our main source was also missing the first 2.5 minutes

There were a lot of stream issues but mostly they were in the second half
of the set. I have fixed, repaired or patched all of the dropouts.
The only one we can't do anything about is the missing 3 mins from the
end of King Of Snake and the beginning of Jumbo as that was a feed transmission
loss.

A bloody great set with some new tracks and some nice new twists on old favs.

33 issues (dropouts/glitches/volume problems)

There it is then, "They wanted us to become a stadium techno band, but that sounded like cheese."

The jumpy chronology of his story makes things odd. He talks about the dark times while talking about the VW project (2013) and then goes on to mention Danny boyle calling about two projects in what would have been 2010 as the start of better times.

Very illuminating, regardless.

i didn't want to be pedantic about it.... but thanks for moving it to here.

===========

i'm still absorbing a lot of the tracks, and listening and watching it again.

i'll admit, i'm glad that there is more improv, and some new tracks in there.

is this going to be a return to an earlier style? (probably not, but who knows).

it's good to see that at least they can experiment more, given the current circumstances.
i know a lot of bands are in this situation (new order did some experimental gigs, with
some return to older songs too).

i don't think festivals or regular concerts are too conducive too this, either due to the
'casual fans', the management, or logistical issues with the bands. but it is what it is.

thanks underworld for bringing back some memories of what it used to be like.

It's more than the Lyrics though isn't it? It's the vocals or the song, with new synths underneath (which are apparently called Red Earth). So it's a sort of mash up.

At the risk of setting off a third version...

This Izotope's Ozone Imager plug-in is free, and does a pretty good job of spreading out a mono signal: https://www.izotope.com/en/products/master-and-deliver/ozone/ozone-imager.html

Set it to Width 50, Stereoise On, Amount 1.0 and to my ears it work wonders for this for this gig.

This is pretty cool. It certainly opens up the soundstage, but using the settings you suggested, I end up with a stereo image that has a bit of a left channel bias. Do you know what that's about?

https://i.imgur.com/yHnCP6p.png

I also feel like I'm listening to out of phase audio, and it's a bit fatiguing after a few minutes.

Edit: Bumping the Stereoise anywhere from 3.0 to 20.0 addressed the imaging issue. There certainly is a spectrum of phasing as you scrub through that range. I'll have to listen more, but maybe about 7.0 sounds best to me?

Badger
10-25-2017, 02:22 AM

btw it's worth noticing that the desk setup for this show looked a bit different again from recent shows. Karl now had a bigger desk for himself facing the crowd, and he was firing off some samples from a CDJ again, something that was missing in the past few years (and added a nice extra bit of live element). He also actually brought and played his guitar which is also something I think we haven't seen him do much at all lately (except for bass guitar on the Dubnobass tour).

And, the LiveHereNow series from 2007+ was an amazing record of the evolving setlist and included some really great live versions of rarer tracks at a reasonable price.

Tomorrow I turn 38. The way we consume music has changed a lot in my time. Much as I pine for those olden times, I think at this point, we are lucky that Rick and Karl are still occasionally producing music. Maybe one day, they'll release the floodgates of their live archives. But as someone who has over 100 bootlegs, there's only so many surprises and different versions. How many times do you need to hear NUXX? Yeah, I love those rare deep tracks, but they're rarer still post 2010. I'd much rather have studio archives and unreleased tracks at this point.

Been busy with other things, race circuit mainly, we've had 18 court cases about environment (angry neighbor) etc to tackle 4 down 14 to go. Ears still f'ed of course so no live shows for me while I want to hear as long as I can in later life.

Apologies if this has already come up but has everyone seen this?

Having difficulties trying to grab this off that webpage....anyone able to grab this video?

It was broadcast on Dutch TV last weekend before going up on this webpage...does anyone have a recording from Dutch TV? That might be better quality if its around?

It includes the missing piece of video/audio from end of KOS and beginning of Jumbo so we would be able to construct a FULL COMPLETE set if we can grab this.

Here's the direct link to video: https://content10c4c.omroep.nl/urishieldv2/l27m39e726425f93da56005bd13e71000000.15c2719f07fb4 d0faa3fc59a67178404/vpro/protected/media/world/2018/10/24/WO_VPRO_13119337_18-52-43.mp4?md5=6fd77567f81b2ad19e7ecd8449eb1377&t=5bd13dc1

From there I just right clicked and saved as. 4.3 gb file that is downloading as I type. :) Thanks for finding this, too bad it's missing the first bit. I will leave the video-stitching to someone more practiced than myself.

That link is coming up as a 403 forbidden error?

Wow, this is fantastic quality!

I guess the URLs expire. One way to get it is to open the inspector on Chrome before hitting play on the video. Click the network tag, and then enter "mp4" in the Filter field. Start playing the video, and you'll see one URL appear. Copy that URL and that's you link to download the video.

But the best thing is that this is all in stereo. This would completely replace the previous audio.

Ok cool...I'll give that a go

But it's only an hour of the show so still only half of it in stereo.

I'm talking to Bill (my Orbital OMT remastering guy) about getting this spliced into our original remaster if we can.

So will look at doing the audio first and then maybe trying to get the video done too.

I thought it was a continuous hour, but I didn't realize that it was songs plucked from throughout the show. At least it's a continuous run of the last 5 songs of the set, which includes the outage from the broadcast.

The audio is 310 Kbps AAC. That is practically lossless. It sounds really good. The video bitrate is huge too.

Badger

Yeah it was a huge 2 hour show.

01 - Red Earth (with Between Stars lyrics) [new track]
02 - GWCW [new track]
03 - Dark Train
04 - Pearls Girl
05 - Mmm...Skyscraper, I Love You
06 - Rez
07 - Downpipe (Dub) BIT/INTERLUDE
08 - Dark & Long
09 - Push Upstairs
10 - Two Months Off
11 - Good Morning Cockerel (with Air Towel lyrics)
12 - Lenny Penne (Darren Price Drums Remix)
13 - Low Burn
14 - King Of Snake [EDIT]
15 - Jumbo [EDIT]
16 - Cowgirl
17 - Born Slippy . NUXX
That was the show and the BOLD text is whats in this new one hour show.

And yeah this quality is bloody great...would kill to get the full 2 hr show uncut like this.

Have had a quick look and test and think this could be patched/spliced into our original remaster with just a little work. The start and ends of the sections could be easily crossfaded into our version we did last year. Just waiting to hear back from Bill once he's had a full look at it. But we can fix those edits of KOS and Jumbo which is awesome.

Then will have to look at tackling the video edit which might be a bit trickier and using the new audio.

Just wait till we piece it together with the rest of the show....

Badger

The video could be difficult as the original stream was 30fps and the new video is 25fps.

Anyone know the best way to splice them together without loss of quality?

The direct link to the video file is dynamic for your session and expires. If you want the direct link to download, you have to extract it yourself from the webpage. Any link that anyone gives you will either be expired on not specific to your session.

thanks,

sorry i'm making it sound so hard.
when i checked earlier, the stream kept getting broken up
into little fragments so i couldn't get the proper URL.

but now, it seems to have captured the right one.

getting rusty, in my old age.

Sadly it seems that this file is no longer up on facebook. Did anyone pull it for themselves, by chance?

From the keynote address. A Karl summary of everything from EE through Barbara Barbara

https://www.facebook.com/narrationsmusic/videos/1715454325154101/

It'd be nice if a video of the whole thing would surface.

Someone has helpfully put this up on Youtube now:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=co7hnWDmOR8

I just wish this was the norm for Underworld live shows again. It's phenomenal. It really felt like they'd realised what a lot of the fans missed about their performances. But sadly I think it was a one off.
