The Hollywood Bowl just announced the 2015 season, which includes none other than our Essex heroes:

ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE

Electronica icons Underworld return to the Bowl in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their legendary album dubnobasswithmyheadman, performing epic tracks from that dance music game-changer along with other landmark house and techno hits.

OMG

I just went to the Bowl for the first time last fall, and I absolutely loved the venue. I'll have to find a way to get to this show. If this had only been a month later, it would have been a lot easier for me to attend.

I would imagine that there will be a few additional U.S. shows announced also. This one was probably announced early because it's part of a concert series. Perhaps they'll finally get that Red Rocks show?

Pricing airfares for this...lest its a one-off. Its been 8 years since NYC.

Red Rocks would make my decade.

Fingers crossed for more U.S. dates; L.A. is not good for me as I no longer drive.

I'm also hoping for an appearance at Moogfest 2016. Check out the "Durational Performances" they held in 2014 and tell me if that doesn't sound right up UW's alley.

I hear ya. This year my chances of being able to afford it are VERY slim, but I can't resist checking it out. It's been 13 years since Chicago!

Anyone know of any inexpensive hotels near the Bowl? Or would it be better to stay by the airport and cab it in? What's the best way to get around if you don't drive?

I'd say part of that question is relative to how long you'd be staying in L.A. Also, there is literally nothing of real substance or interest by the airport whereas Holly-weird offers a fair share of options within walking distance or short ride.

Thank you. I'd be coming purely for the show, so it would just be an overnight trip, maybe two nights depending on flight schedules.

Someone on another forum mentioned the Hilton Garden Inn or Orchid Suites Hotel. I haven't checked out rates yet, but is anyone familiar with those?

Interesting that the press release doesn't explicitly say they're playing Dubnobass in full, which was very much the big deal about the Royal Festival and subsequent show. I wonder if there's concern that the American fan base would be less interested in the limited setlist? Or maybe the boys got bored? Or maybe it's just a copywriting oversight.

I read the announcement on the Facebook page as meaning they would be playing Dubnobasswithymyheadman' in full, but your right, it doesn't explicitly say it.
: We are very happy to announce that Underworld will return to the iconic Hollywood Bowl (https://www.facebook.com/HollywoodBowl) on 21st June 2015 for a special performance in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their album dubnobasswithmyheadman. I hope to make it. I would be coming from Arizona. I've never been to the Hollywood Bowl, But I know how iconic it is. Did anyone here see UW at The Bowl back in 2007?

Hopefully the single event tickets are reasonably priced, and that some of the close sections are available.

I suspect ssomething similar to I<3techno. I would love a 2 hour set that starts with d&l, finishes with RoB and includes dubno style versions of the obligatory hits. Not likely but would be cool.

I was at the show in 2007. My soon to be brother in law got married the day before in Sacramento, so my now wife and I took a trip down I-5 the next day to get to LA. I had seen UW 3 times before in indoor venues and there was something magical to seeing Born Slippy played under a clear sky with that many other people around!

Plus, they played Juanita and the guitar jam version of Glam Bucket, so that was awesome too (http://uwlive.rowla.com/gigs/view/285)

Someone on another forum mentioned the Hilton Garden Inn or Orchid Suites Hotel. I haven't checked out rates yet, but is anyone familiar with those?

I've read great reviews of the Hilton. I've never stayed there, though. I've stayed at the Best Western on Highland (it's the closest hotel to the Bowl). It was worth it when it was $100 (it's now more than double that..definitely not worth that). Hollywood Orchid Suites is good if you want a full kitchen. I like that place, but it's not very modern if you're a stickler for that--especially if you're used to Hiltons, Sheratons, Westins, etc. I try not to stay there anymore because about 2 years ago, it started attracting noisy tourists who wake up at 6am to go do tourist-y things. There are other hotels/motels on Sunset near In-N-Out if you're on a budget. Don't stay at the Motel 6 on Whitley near Hollywood Blvd., though. That place is horrid.

The 'nice' thing about Bowl shows is that they have an 11pm curfew, so with the 20 minute-ish walk to the Red Line (the subway) or opting for one of the Bowl shuttles, it's easy to stay in another part of town.

We did a group block of 16 tickets (all of which were spoken for almost immediately after we made the reservation). It brought the price per ticket down to around $33 per and our seats are in section K, just a few rows back from the Terrace Boxes, which are about five times the price.

Only group and subscription tickets are available and the best seats seem to have been snapped up in the closer sections near and around the Super Seat locations. (Refer to the Hollywood Bowl schematic to understand what I'm talking about here: http://www.hollywoodbowl.com/seating#section=1).

But there should be plenty of good seats available at the sides and the sections behind F through K, though finding a few good ones in those areas is also feasible, I would imagine. Otherwise, the boxes are probably going for about $150-200 per person. I was in a Garden Box back in 2007 and it was an amazing place to see the show. If you've never been to the Bowl, it's a must.

I'd be interested in a group buy, even at full price, if we could snag one of the pool or garden boxes. Heck, I haven't seen UW for 13 years and I'm blowing my annual budget on just getting there; a little extra for a good seat won't hurt. Anyone else interested?

Sorry, I just caught up with the thread and read your post. I've made a tentative reservation at the Hollywood Orchid Suites because of a recommendation on one of the Radiohead forums, so I'm glad to hear it seconded! I might be waking up at 6am to catch a return flight anyway, so no worries about the tourists. Thank you for the tips!

No problem! Hope you like it there, although it sounds like you'll barely be there (I want to sleep in, so I'm staying somewhere else). Oh, for info, Orchid has a keyed entrance (normally, the front desk buzz you in), so be prepared to use your key to get into the hotel post-show.

Thanks, Jason! I did the same today and was just heading over here to post it. I put down the $99 deposit. We haven't yet confirmed the exact number of people so far, but it looks as if we may have about 4 tickets remaining in row 12 *correction* of section F2 at $33 per person. Please contact me before you buy your own as we need to meet our 10 minimum, Thanks.

So the only way to get an affordable ticket is via group rate? :/ If this is the only US date then I'm seriously considering this. I have enough sky miles for two out West. Really don't want to pay the subscription rate of over $100.

The group rate is 20% off the individual ticket price (not counting the $9 group order fee). Furthermore, if there are any subscription seats left over before the individual tickets go on sale, the group tickets are given the option to upgrade BEFORE the individual tickets are allocated. (I double-checked with the venue and have this in writing.) So these are not only the best price, they're the best choice of location outside of buying a subscription or going through a scalper.

They're supposed to contact us regarding any upgrades near the end of April, in the order that group tickets were requested. I know that SappysCurry is ahead of us with a sixteen-person group. Who knows how many others. Our group has six people confirmed so far and we're trying to meet the minimum of ten. Anyone?

As one of the six in the previous post, I really hope that this all works out and that I can see the show with fellow Dirties from the forums here. Takes me back to 1999 when I met up with ~25 folk (including cdave2, right?) from the dirtylist at The Golden Nugget before that show at the Riviera.

Certainly gives an extra sense of community :)

Great times at the Golden Nugget! Oddly (because I'm never early for anything except a concert), I was the first one there and had to ask the restaurant staff to direct anyone looking for the dirtylist to our table. Just found it.... Using the code 'HB2015' worked for me to look at presale tickets for the Underworld show. I found it via another band's facebook page (The B-52s of all groups)

edit ----As of 11am California time, there are some pairs in Sections D and E (to the left and right of the Terrace level section), those are $56.50 per ticket. There are a few singles in the sections directly behind Terrace level, those range from $50 to $70 per. And then behind, plenty to pick from.

Curious to see if anyone here was able to get something good with this.

Seats are $100 each plus $1 venue service fee per seat. If you prefer to use PayPal, they charge roughly 3% of the total. (I can give you the exact amount before you decide, based on the number of seats.)

Just got a pair for the show, after much hassle. I attempted to purchase them on my computer using both a MC and a V debit card, but each time, I was told I needed to enter a gift card number and the order wouldn't process (VERY aggravating!). I finally had to use my phone, which only gave me the best seats option (which wasn't really where I wanted to sit, but oh well). At least I have confirmed seats, and much cheaper than I had been willing to spend. BTW, cdave2, I wish I would have read your post before I bought my seats. I'd have liked to sit with you lot.

Had talked to the Hollywood Bowl ticket office and they had told me that there would be Terrace and Garden seats available at the General Sale - but nope...

Yeah, it's weird how nearly everything from the Pool to the second Promenade were gone (I had K2 turn up for me once and everything after that has been N2 and N1 endlessly). I'm watching the map right now and they just put on sale everything along the wall for F3 (this happened about 44 minutes after the regular on sale).

I remember speaking to a lady on the phone in March about the ticket process, and she mentioned that the Pool and Garden sections hardly ever become available for the general sale. She said most of those are sold as season pass to all Hollywood Bowl events. She said at the time if I wanted to buy those, I'd have to most likely go thru StubHub or other means.

I'm fortunate that I already had a ticket, but went online this morning using my laptop and the Ticketmaster smartphone app to see what was available, and was very suprised that nothing even in the Terrace Level was available. It was showing sections N and M (or similar). Once in a while a J or H section seat would appear.

It's so random buying from Ticketmaster, and many times the best seats are gone right at sale time. They'll already be up on the secondary market at triple the price. But maybe as June 21 gets closer, seats become available for regular price.

Speaking of selling tixs, I've got 2 myself that I need to let go now. Unlike cdave2, though, mine are electronic, and are in Section F3, Row 6, Seats 18-20. I spent $95 on them, and that's how much I'll charge to whomsoever wants them, unless Ticketbastard puts another fee in for a transfer (knowing how much they love their fees, I wouldn't be surprised).

Well, the Bowl is situated on Highland Ave @ US 101, and it's about 4 long blocks from there to Highland & Hollywood Blvd. There's a bunch of restaurants in that area, including a Hard Rock Cafe and Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles is about 1_3/4 miles from the bowl (one of Scoot's favorite places, IIRC). It's one of the biggest tourist areas in LA, so there's tons of places to choose from.

I shouldn't have looked on Ticketmaster just now (600pm Pacific Time). There's a few pairs in the 'Garden level' section 1, 2, 6 and 7 for sale now. Must be from credit card orders that got declined or people failed to pay for their group purchase.

I promise be happy with my ticket location.

Now that's frustrating. As of my writing this, those are gone, but I'm seeing some Terrace seats left and tons of stuff in the first bench sections that weren't available on the general on sale (especially G2 all the way over to K3)

Just received an email from StubHub that our remaining ticket was sold. I have a name (and a face, because I Googled the shipping address), so at least I'll know who to say hello to. (I once surprised a couple who bought my extra Annie Lennox tickets on eBay by doing this - they were quite taken aback. Guess they didn't expect such personal service from their ticket seller. Heh.) :)

And I think I beat the printing rush by paying off our group tickets a day early - they arrived today, faster than expected. I'm handling them like a holy relic.

Jason Amoeba is a cool store. It reminds me of what Tower Records used to be like. My GF is a huge Queensryche fan, and one of the cashiers was wearing a cool necklace with one of their logos on it. She pointed it out to me, and he heard. He actually took it off and gave it too her. I was floored. It's become my favorite record shop in LA.

Most likely season ticket holders/subscribers. There are also usually seats held for labels, promoters, artists, VIPs, etc., and some of them may be from that.

Man, that's frustrating. You'd expect the early buyers to get first dibs on better seats although that's not the case. I thought briefly of splurging on a garden seat - then remembered my unexpected medical bill.

Ah well, that's the concert business.

Guys, if anyone can help out gcoleman99, please speak up. We've been corresponding and I don't think he'll mind my saying that there are now three extra tickets, the original pair plus one of the terrace box 1323 seats. That's a lot for one person to get stuck with. I'm spreading the word as best I can.

So...meetup plans? gcoleman and Chris M both had some good suggestions. I'm personally more interested in food than drink but will go along with the majority vote. Won't have a car so it's cab, foot or mass transit for me. Let's decide on a time first - I could do Saturday night, Sunday daytime or Sunday dinner before the show. Thoughts?

This is Feather ready to plan and party for the greatest LA show of the summer...UNDERWORLD!! Underworld will be performing their classic album "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" as a 20 year commemorative concert. I could not be more thrilled. As you all know Underworld is my EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING and I want this night to be one of the best nights ever!!

This event page is to plan the pre-party picnic, ticket purchasing, caravans, glowruption, hotel arrangements and after-parties for this night.

Yes you read it right, I want to plan a glowruption!

Tickets ON SALE NOW!

I also want everyone's outfit to have a Underworld lyric on it, and outfit theme is going to be SILVER in honor of Karl Hyde's most infamous sequin shirt.

I couldn't link up, either: "It may be temporarily unavailable, the link you clicked on may have expired, or you may not have permission to view this page." Chris M, do you have further info you could post?

In the meantime, how about either a late Sunday brunch or very early dinner? I vote for Roscoe's unless someone can suggest a good spot within walking distance of the Bowl. Not sure how much time we'd need to get there, park etc. before the show starts at 7:00; I'm thinking we should probably head out by 6:00 just to be safe.

Feedback please? Would be nice to have plans settled by next weekend, especially for those of us who are traveling.

Kinda mystified about how the whole ticket sale process went... How on the day of general public sale there were zero tickets available in the Garden or Terrace Boxes - but a month later there were.

I managed to grab a box of 4 tickets in the Terrace section this past week - but am left with the 4 seats I purchased earlier...

If anyone is looking for 4 inexpensive tickets:

Well, here's what I propose. Some of us may be meeting up with the group on Facebook; there's a photo gathering at 6:15, and possibly a pre-show picnic among other things. So, because that's still up in the air, why don't we plan to get together for Sunday brunch around, say 1:00 or so? Roscoe's sounds good to me, but I'm open to other suggestions.

I'm willing to take this ball and run with it, but I need to know if others agree. If you're interested, please PM me by this Saturday the 13th with the number of people attending plus any suggestions on time and place. If no one says otherwise, I'll leave it at Roscoe's at 1:00pm on the 21st.

so... dubno in full? unfortunately not... mmm... hollywood bowl i hate you. aside from the short show (lame curfew), there were no improvs nor encore and 1 major sound flaw, like someone accidentally hit the off switch towards the end of jumbo... the sound just cut out, but the band was unphased and just kept going. other than that the sound was excellent, could have been a tad bit louder, but that's just me... rick, karl and darren were in fantastic form. highlights for me were dirty epic, two months off, and born slippy of course. best moment was when karl told the crowd to dance with him towards the end of the born slippy. amazing!

Well, I enjoyed the show from my vantage point, high amongst the proletariat. Things sounded pretty good as well - it was great having Darren, Karl, and Rick on stage. Very fortunate.

However, I was kind of expecting the full album......

The show only underscored the need for Underworld to return to the U.S. and play long-neglected cities - Chicago? Detroit?

Every track was performed wonderfully, and some variations have been introduced to the dubno songs since the first show in London. The house and the band were in tremendously high spirits. I think only the longtime dirties migh have been disappointed by the start/stop nature of the performance, but it seemed many people were unhappy that dubno was not performed in full. This was really the only opportunity for Americans to experience it live. A pity, but as I said the songs that were played were pristine.

I see you guys are still up. :)

Amazing show. No, it wasn't Dubno as expected, but I'll happily take the unexpected from UW. I was afraid we might have revisited Chicago 2002 when the sound cut out during "Jumbo," but fortunately it was only a momentary glitch.

Really enjoyed Jungle as well - it's high praise indeed to make this comparison, but some of their material strongly reminded me of Chic.

gcoleman99 and dubnobasswithme, it was wonderful to see you again after all these years. Troy McClure, jetpig, Chris M and whatkilesaid, great to meet you!

We waited outside the artists' entrance for a chance to say thanks until we were told they would absolutely not be coming out. Not surprising, it's Father's Day and their families were with them. I did hear a comment from one of the crew that there are hopes for a more extensive tour next year - let us hope that turns out to be true!

Thanks to everyone for a magnificent evening. Now off to grab four hours of sleep before I head to the airport. :)

Vibe was great, a wonderful first show, glitches and all! I had avoided any setlist expectations, thankfully, and was ready for anything; I missed the guitars on stage, but that's about it. PG was straight outta EE, Scribble was in the Maida Vale style, Skyscraper was lacking it's album ending section, and Spikee was abbreviated, though tastefully, and everything had some small flourishes. Good to meet everyone, travel safe, and here's to hoping next time isn't too long from now!

Since this is the 5th time I've seen them live since 99, I must say every concert has been different (also didn't help that this is the first non open floor venue I've seen them in, this is the first I watched the show far away from close to the stage)

a bit mildly disappointed too since it seemed like they would be playing dubno in its entirety at first, then the song stop song nature of the performance (spoiled by the previous shows where they would normally do 2-3 songs seamlessly to start their shows) but from the darker tone of Pearl's Girl followed by a slower brooding rendition of Dirty Epic to progressively more and more upbeat and anthemic songs all the way to the end...it may not have been the old long non-stop improvs, but the flow from Pearls Girl to the end was a very nicely paced tempo and performance (it felt like it kept building up even with the stops in between songs). I was expecting an encore of Dark Train or Moaned to top it off, but considering its an open air Sunday event its understandable how there was no encore.

speaking of Dirty Epic, I remembered when that was a song that rarely made the live set list...the wiltern 2002 was only the 2nd time it was played I think, complete with a blazing green laser light show, and the only time I've watched them perform it in its album form (now we get the Darren Price era dark groover version). So it was nice to see a slightly subtler dark version of most people's favorite track

Yeah. I particularly enjoyed Karl's singing on "Dirty Epic"...very soulful. You could tell he was trying to revisit that mindset. It's bittersweet, but it made for an outstanding performance.

Fantastic show. Very unexpected but welcome setlist given the prior shows. The band and particularly Karl were in a great mood.

I noticed a few of the prime center front pool boxes cleared out early - had to beat traffic or get back to tend the wine cellar, I guess.

Tbh, not at all disappointed in the lack of front to back dubnobass - imo was the right call for that venue and that night and I'm very grateful to have been able to make the trip from NY ;). Thanyouuw

Wow, what a great time! Met so many people. Hi gcoleman99 and cdave2! Roscoes was great. Fun picnicking with the dirtyepic crew. Loved the Bowl. First time there and I'm dying to go back. I had such a blast dancing like a fool with everyone. :D

Also, from now on the album should be known as nubdo in honor of Jason Bentley flubbing the name in the intro. :P

just a quick checkin here. i'm sitting on a generous sum of candid/soundcheck and live performance images. might be a week or two before getting sign-off from band management on what they'll allow me to share.

had fantastic conversations with band and met their families. karl even recognized my second toughest in the infants sleeve-tattoo. wish i could say something that hasn't been said about their kind-hearted nature, but here it as again. such sincere people! darren was a bit shy at first, but i managed to get him to share some insights on the updated tech.

have no arguments on the setlist. completely fit the occasion and it was a treat to hear the slight mods to each track, which had new and fun elements different from previous tours. i'll also add the lighting rig was exceptional. it's easy to go unnoticed with their fast configurations, but my stills managed to capture some really dynamic compositions.

solid meeting you dirts as well!

I swear I saw some glowsticks that we're defying gravity. It was this one section that would toss it in the air, and then they would float down, like it was a glowstick drone lol - seriously my buddy saw em too, never seen glowsticks float back to the ground, anyone?
Was my 5th show and one of my favs by far, my section was jumping in unison to the beats, so much fun, hope we get a new LP announcement soon, love these lads!

I was very pleased with how things all played out. Since they weren't mixing between songs, I really appreciated Karl talking about several of them before they started. In particular, I appreciated his comment on the lyrical content of Dirty Epic and how it represented an extremely dark time for him (the "dark stuff"). He then added that Rick took the lyrics and crafted something beautiful from it.

I was initially sad when I realized they weren't going to do dubnobass in full, but as soon as the concert was over, it all made sense. The majority of the people there couldn't care less about Tongue or River Of Bass. To include those songs would have brought down the whole vibe. UW correctly played it upbeat and kept people on their feet :)

On a more personal note, I did get the chance to see Skyscraper, Spoonman, and Dirty Epic (!!!) performed live. Only been waiting around 15 years for that to happen ;)

right on re the set.
i've seen the dubno shows and they work to a fan audience but not really to a casual crowd.

It seems that Steve Hall was at the Bowl and happened to be walking by as the group photo was being taken.

That magnetic mag article quickly devolved into a "y'damn kids" rant. Not that I disagree, per se, but at least spend more than half an article about a concert talking about the concert.

Thanks for sharing all the pics & links to reviews. Wish I could've been there; date was just not possible being Father's Day. Too bad as I have plenty of air miles - (can we try Red Rocks again please?). Hope the rumors are true about another bigger tour (& perhaps new material - Olympic games material seems eons ago). I'll admit I'd been a lil' bummed that it was not full "Dubno," but would have been happy no matter what - UW live can not be beat. I still would've caught two songs I've never heard live as of yet ('Spoonman' & 'Scribble.') Was the version of 'Spikee' the full version w/ vocals like the epic encore version from San Fran a few years back? How about 'Rez'? Long/short? Any tweeks w/ that one? One of my all time favs. I still love some of those early rare live recorded versions (esp. The Octagon '94) of 'Rez' & the version they played on the live radio broadcast years ago when Karl said, "I hear the sound of popping cans...in the dark..." :D

Rez was a long version, nothing too out of the ordinary, but I don't think it was a straight rendition either. Spikee was abbreviated from it's full length, but was a pounding rendition and included vocals and the guitar riff (not live).

While there's always more tracks it'd be awesome to hear, the only glaring omission in my opinion was Dark and Long or Dark Train. It was a phenomenal show.

There's another thread with links for all the songs played at the Hollywood Bowl. Most are full or close to full length from various spots of the Bowl.

Like 'jetpig' said, 'Rez' was a long version. But it had some different parts to it, a bit more drums in the middle to me. It was just Rick on stage... the screens on the sides showcased Rick well working the boards.
I hadn't heard 'Spoonman' in person either, and that was great too.

The show was remarkable. Karl's intro to 'Dirty Epic' was beautiful and touching. From my vantage point, Rick and Karl looked really pleased with lots of interaction on stage. Hope to do it again soon.
