View Full Version : Welcome to Born Dirty
TheBang

If you're very observant, you might have noticed a small change to the forums today. ;)
The Dirty Collective has been working very hard for the past few months, and is very proud to launch the ultimate Underworld fan community, Born Dirty! The name change is the perfect reflection of our heritage and our love of Underworld.
The site is still a work in progress, but over time, we will be incorporating content that is currently spread amongst various disparate sites, as well as creating new content. We aim to make this site and community your one-stop shop for all things Underworld.
A lot of people have contributed input to this project, but we would like to acknowledge the people who have put in many, many hours to make this possible: Mike, ThingInABook, Dunwho, stimpee, Yannick, and TheBang. And a special thanks to lloyd for allowing us to import his several years' worth of Underworld news.
We welcome any thoughts or feedback you might have about the new community.

And as for the brown; hey I liked it too, but nothing can stay the same forever!
It was long overdue for a change!
Great job guys ;)

its not only about the brown, its about message boards with black text on white backgrounds. you don't usually see it that way for a reason ;) its terrible on the eyes.
in fact, right here in the Quick Reply box, you'll notice its light blue/grey with grey text and SUPER easy on the yes.

Just offer other style sheets in the lower left hand dropdown.
Can we get some actual news from the band now? It sucks that people who read Spin.com first thing in the morning know more about what's happening with Underworld than the people who check Dirty first thing in the morning.

Congrats on the launch of the borndirty.org.
I like it. I like the dirtyradio topbar. And I like the new look. Great work people!
And of course I was happy to share the contents of my old blog with the community. Keep up the good work and make all underworld fans proud of our own dirty little corner of the interwebs.
Thnx to all involved.

so, after the obvious troll post i'm going to tell what i really feel about the new site....
it's decent. i think it's a good idea to incorporate the different sources and make it more of a centralized place...they way it actually used to be.
the white is fine with me. what is it with you guys complaining about black text on white background? do you have your text editors and pdf viewers inverted as well? because the last time i checked it's pretty much the same....and nobody complains about google or the new york times being hard on the eyes either....maybe you should optimize your screens.
anyhoo, well done.
but you should definitely clean up the source code. because 115 errors (http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.borndirty.org%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0) is a lot. and most of it can be easily fixed.

1) optimized browsers
2) message boards don't often display blocks of text, they display single lines with tons of white-space.
3) header bars, icons, dates, etc just add to an eye strain on a white background. it's a usability nono for message boards.
Look at a text-editor like MSWord and then this forum. You can't honestly tell me that it gives off the same eye strain.
I'm being dead honest, and not whiny, but I have a very hard time reading this forum now because of the white. I TOTALLY appreciate the work that went into changing it, and love that its all in one place now, but to me, this site is first and foremost a forum -- and one that I've been using for ~10 years.

if anyone else has any suggestions then make a note of them and we'll try to take them onboard. There was that temporary forum once, at a different URL, some years back, a restart that went wrong. It had a different colour theme (guess if some users "wanted back the brown"...). Dark blue, red and white maybe? I seem to remember to have liked it. Could I be any more vague?
I'm not a fanatic advocate of the brown theme, but I, too, find that much white hard on the eyes. Therefore, some colour would be highly appreciated.
Apart from that: Brilliant job on the overall design and graphics. Like it more and more. Thanks to everyone involved.

I like the change and the structural movement from unofficial 'official' to official official.
I am going to be one of those erudite individuals who has always liked, and admired the choice of brown as a forum background. It's always been the opposite of every other forum I've frequented over the years and the color served to reinforce the messages being displayed, not distract from them.
Just a thought on bringing back the brown.
Otherwise, good work.

I would have only one suggestion. . . tighten up the white space. In 1280x1024, almost half of the vertical page layout is header, navigation, and menu. This, in my opinion, should take up (at most) 15% of a page.
Perhaps the contents of "header_bar_1" and "header_bar_4" could be rendered vertically in a div down the left side of the page.
Besides that, I love it. Nice job!!!

There were a couple of other designs that unfortunately do not seem to have been archived. There was a very cool one prior to 1999 that I seem to have lost forever. Between Brown and Yannick's first site in 2002 there was another we had as well that had much popping up, abstract fun and suggestive images. I'll post some of that stuff one day if I can find it.

That's nice to hear, because I made it, it got caught on a local radio station, where someone was listening to, which gave me a job, which gave me 3 years of working experience while my peers went to college right before and during the dotcom bubble burst, and basically is the basis of my current professional life :).
One could claim that basis is actually me playing Wolfenstein 3D with a friend who had a computer while in highschool, but hey :P.

nice work on the new site people. I like it mostly. Yeah the white could be a bit less... white (the box I'm typing this in is sort of grey, which is already better).
Also can we get something along the line of the new icons for the top navigation bar? The nav bar looks pretty bland right now and sorta ugly with that grey gradient but those icons are pretty groovy.
News page looks a bit messy and there doesn't really seem to be a consistent look troughout the site (yet?) with some weird illustrated icons on the right side of the site pages that don't seem to fit with the rest of the look (megaphone, speech bubbles, blue cartoon bird) and some of the header text (like I SAW A MAN on the news page) that seems to be badly aliased (maybe a browser thing? Looks the same in Firefox and Chrome though). And perhaps the underworld social media links should be at the top of the site (perhaps next to the RSS feed button) rather than hidden away at the bottom, since they seem to be more and more important for people following and interacting with the band.

We did consider this, but its more important for us if visitors stayed here, on this site, and not be distracted but other social interaction that is nothing to do with us - so the compromise was at the footer, with the other external links.

poo on that idea. i mean, i love the new site, it's great, refreshing and whatnot. but eventually it would be nice to have the brown back again, or to be able to switch between the two. it's like going into a warm log cabin with a bunch of friends (and hot chocolate!) vs. going out clubbing with a bunch of friends at this awesome new club. yeah, the club is cool, and i'd never give up the club for the log cabin, but i wouldn't give up the log cabin for the club either. see what i mean?
Man you need to get out a bit more... too long in the log cabin.. ;)

i love the analogy. but, I prefer the new artsy look. it's very spot on with the new release and change is always good. the log cabin is a nice place to visit, but i wouldn't want to live there! ;)
New design looks good and all. I like it, and I don't miss the brown, but black on white is really tough on the eyes as so many others have said. Any good designer should now that it hurts to read black on pure white after a while, and messageboards are mostly for reading. Please consider changing white for at least light gray. Listen to the people! Other that that. Great work guys!

If you want light gray, go to the bottom-left corner of any screen, and change the drop-down style to "not so white BornDirty". If you want that change to be permanent, you can change it in your UserCP, under Options, I think.

User CP --> Settings & Options --> Edit Options --> aaallllll the way down to the bottom, choose 'Forum Skin: not so white BornDirty'.I love quoting myself. :)

It's not the first time the site looked like the album :)
You have no idea what that little design did to my life :)
I used to love that 'little design' (glad to know you ) (maybe you can do something to help the borndirty team)
And now I dislike what i can see here
and yes it's too white ! (i don't care for the brown)
I will stop now
