I hope it gets put back. I was so happy to see another Cali date because I can't go to the Hard show. And SD is even further for me, but I was willing to go the additional 120+ miles. I hope it's just a case of Ticketmaster jumping the gun again and putting dates up before the band allowed it.

it appears the original concert promoter wanting to bring UW to 4th & B was not able to follow through on the contract for whatever reason. there was also a los angeles radio station interested in having UW headline their halloween event, but that possibility seems silent at the moment. on a side note goldenvoice is usually the promoter that handles the 4th & B traffic so there is always hope that something could surface from their end.

Is it a San Francisco station you mean? Because I saw where they're listed for Live 105's Halloween thingy at the Cow Palace.

Chris M
09-01-2010, 11:09 AM
the live 105 SF event just sprung up last week. the LA station had been negotiating right about the time HARD made their announcement.

seems like UW are purposely choosing festival type events for this round of touring - maybe shorter sets are the call at the moment in order to prep for solo headlining gigs next year?

Ah, so there was a Los Angeles station trying to get them? Do you know which one?

I was disappointed to see that the Bay Area show is also a festival, but I guess it's cheaper for them to come over here when a larger entity can pay for it. It's too bad Underworld can't hop on the Massive Attack/Thievery Corporation US tour. That could be like a mini-festival.

if your budget allows for it, i'd try to score a room near the marina ( marriot, hilton, or hyatt) which basically is below market street and puts you within close proximity of the downtown points of interest. the walk to 4th and B would be a little under 15min. there are also cheaper hotels near there like the double tree or motel 6, but there is not much to see or do in those areas.

wow, sounds like we're gonna have a enough dirts to justify a proper meet! maybe just maybe we might get yan too?

i'll be photographing the gig, but am totally down to shoot the shit at some point:)

I just went looking for hotels and is there anything within walking distance of this venue that is under $100 besides the Motel 6 and the hostels? I went ahead and got the Motel 6 just so I wouldn't be homeless, but I was hoping there'd be something a little closer. I know downtown SD has always been expensive, but I have to Amtrak it, so I'm on a limited budget.

So I emailed 4th and B and their response was:
From what I understand AEG has set this up with the box seats as a separate ticket but the price is the same as a standing ticket on the floor. If you purchased a box ticket It gives you a seat in the box there are 8 total seats per box but the seats are first come first serve. I hope this makes sence I know it is confusing.

Hotwire has a handful of motel options at the $40 level (Mission Valley), which is insane. Considering all I'll need is a bed after the show, it's worth the distance from the venue. Going by myself...like most UW shows. Drinkes wise, may have to flask it, since I'm staunchly against paying venue prices. Then again, why can't we all just go sober?

That Mayan show was my first UWlive experience as well. I still regret not going out to the organic festival back in '96, stupid college deadline.

The san diego show will be my 7th time seeing them. Also going to HHM the day after and currently working on persuading my buddy to get tickets to the dj shadow show in anaheim monday night. wish i had been UW savvy back in 98 for that mayan gig. hearing the energy from that recorded set is absurdly unreal... in fact karl acknowledges the magic in the air towards the end of the set and even reminisced about it during a phone interview we had last year -
"L.A. turned around for this band in the early ’90s when we came back and played the Mayan Theater (http://www.clubmayan.com/). That was an extraordinary night for us, which was a very long time ago." - http://thescenestar.typepad.com/ss/2009/08/interview-karl-hyde-of-underworld.html#more

on a side note my wife and i are expecting our first child the day of the san diego gig. i'm really hoping for a day or two early delivery or a day late for that matter... but hey, bringing a new little life into the world ain't such a bad gig either;)

Ah the Mayan gig. My first too. I got there ridiculously early, we're talking daylight, and was lucky enough to be sitting outside (with one other bloke, as I recall), when Darren, Rick and K jumped out of a van midstreet and tried the front doors to get in for soundcheck. They were locked, so they looked bewildered a bit before Darren suggested they head around back and they passed us and Karl gave this wide smile and a quick "Allo!" before they bounded off around the side. Wasn't exactly a meet-and-greet... but for a boy from the suburbs, I will forever love downtown L.A. for moments like that.

Conrats to you Chris and your lady for the upcoming arrival (hope she'll grow up to be a UW fan).

I too saw the Mayan show (weird how there's so many of us on this thread with that shared experience!). That was sort of my first show too...I saw them once before that, but it was the Mk1 era. I miss the Mayan. They don't seem to have as many shows anymore, but I guess they're doing better as a latino nightclub.

Hey Chris, I know the feeling. My son was due the night UW played at Hollywood Bowl in Sept. '97. Our friends were all over my house painting the baby's room on the afternoon of the show. My wife didn't feel like it was going to happen so she gave me one look and I was on the road from San Diego to the Hollywood Bowl with my buddy. Walked in the doors as Oakenfold was finishing the opening set. By far the best concert of my life. My son was born 24 hours later. Best day of my life. UW is burned into me now. :-)

Thanks Darktrain for the leg work on this. I just emailed a rep from 4th and B as to what is happening because someone from another forum is stating that L.E.D. & AEG are still the promoters for the UW show and that Reset is only promoting the 'afterhour party" at fourth and B. The set times (according to this person) is:

8:00-9:30pm Bareback DJs
9:30-10:30pm Deth Hertz
10:30pm-11:45pm Underworld

I can't believe all this drama that has happen before this show has even taken place. I guess I'm just glad to be checking out UW at all this year, though a 3 hr set would be pretty EPIC!

I always figured there would be an opening act and then the boys. But this is getting out of hand. A bunch of nobody DJ's squeezed into an evening that many of us had expected to be a proper night of music without the HARD bullshit.

On the other hand, are UW so beholden to their pre-determined setlist that they're going to do the same show at every event, no matter how big or small and this rave-lineup nonsense is just a by-product of that approach to this tour?

I'm going to be one pretty un-happy bollock if the SD show turns out to be just like HARD LA. I mean, I'm not the biggest Felix da Housecat fan, but THAT show sounds like the best of the US tour dates.

The guy I talked to said (and I'm paraphrasing here) that AEG did the booking but ticket sales were sluggish, so Reset was hired to aid in promotion, beef up the lighting/soundsystem and make it more like a Halloween party.
Reset wanted Underworld to go on later but AEG doesn't like their artists ending after midnight, so the times he mentioned as possibilities were 8-11, 9-12, and 10-1.

With the whole event going from 7-4, I suspect that the AEG-booked acts have a 4-hour window to fill, with the Reset-booked acts filling out the night.

Why would Underworld would be crammed into such a short time slot, though? Perhaps they're contractually bound to be done by a certain time? 10-11:45 would be a bit more reasonable, IMHO.

I too opted for SD after last year's HARD debacle, and while the 21+ certainly helps, I'm still a bit bummed at how this is seemingly turning out...though if they go on at all it'll be better than last time.
(trying to get all my complaining out of my system now and enjoy myself on the night:))

Exactly. Yeah, I thought there'd be at least one opener. I just kind of meant that UW were the headliner in the sense that they're a real headliner (as opposed to headlining HARD/Live 105's festivals). I'd read some odd things about the 4th & B regarding their booking of multiple opening acts in order to get people to drink more to fill the time, but having never been there, I wouldn't know.

10-12 would make me so happy. A 75 minute set is almost not worth the effort (well, to me...the 18 hour roundtrip to SD is not appealing to me right now).

Maybe AEG has contracts with the unions or something (like in Los Angeles).

so the rep (Judy) from 4th and B got back to me, here's what I'd asked and her response,

me:
Hi again Judy,

I have some new questions about the Underworld show @ 4th and B. There are conflicting info on the internet as to the set times for the show. The other day, a website (promoted by Reset and AEG), www.screamsanddreams.com, shows that they are promoting the event and claims that Underworld is confirmed to play at 10pm thru 1am (3 hours). I thought that L.E.D. + AEG was the promoter for the event?, see this link: www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=165059870187915&index=1

Someone on a music forum claims that the true set-times are (and that Reset is only promoting the after hour event at 4th and B):
ACTUAL SET TIMES:
8:00-9:30pm Bareback DJs
9:30-10:30pm Deth Hertz
10:30pm-11:45pm Underworld

And then from 12am-4am is Reset's "event" aka afterhours.

I'm trying to clarify because many people are now under the assumption that Underworld will be playing a 3 hour set which would be very AWESOME but doesn't sound likely.

Please clarify and I will post on different forums what the facts are

Judy:
I believe that underworld will go on 10:00 to 10:30 and I believe their set will end around 1:00am I am going to try to confirm this and will get back to you as soon as I find out. We have also had a change in the Vip seating arrangement. We have that entire section reserved for bottle service. Luckily you got your tickets before this went into effect. Just wanted to let you know for any one else that you might run into. I will get back to you on the other stuff

The VIP seating was mentioned because my previous questions to her were about the Box seating at 4th and B which I scored tickets to the day this event went on-sale. This is starting to sound very promising again, I'll take a 10:30-12:30 UW time slot... Perhaps everything gets finalized tomorrow?

just wanted to post that dani (psychic friend) over on the coachella forum posted the following earlier today, she's a GV employee so just factor that in (as to the accuracy of this info):

These are what i got from the promoter

doors 8pm
Blaqk Audio 9:00-9:35
Underworld 10:15 - 11:45 so.....who knows whats going on. but 90 minutes for UW seems 99% likely; 35 mins for blaqk audio is odd though unless it was a typo.

i'm another HARD summer '09 refugee and despite being a fan of the boys since the late 90s, this will be my first time to see them. i really hope they (and me) aren't swallowed by a silly 1-day festival setting. whole reason i didn't buy my tix to HARD haunted mansion right away.

(Forgive my little introduction here that I wanted to make in case R&K should be reading at some point…)

I am so extraordinarily grateful that UW has opted for this gig in my hometown and current city of residence. Thank you so very much, Richard Smith and Karl Hyde. God bless ya both. I’ve seen you two play live perhaps five times, but this is the first I’ve ever heard of you coming to San Diego. Thank you so much, again.

Hello all. I’m having a bit of a weird evening, but that’s not a tangent I want to take, this being my first post in many years. Don’t know if there’s still anyone around who was here back in 2002, but that was the last time I posted with any regularity. I think my forum name might have been “Lifedownstairs” back then, but I’m not sure. I most often chatted with King Of Snake, Yannick, and other cool people I can’t remember.

Anyway! I live in San Diego and I’m going to the show Saturday night (of course), and I’m *also* a refugee from the aborted Forum show last year. (Oh how I wish I would have simply paid for the plane ticket to Oakland to see UW at the Fox!)

I’d like to know exactly what the hell’s going on at 4th&B, more specifically I’d like to see UW guaranteed *at least* ninety minutes, and thankfully it does seem that’s the case. Of course, what I’d really like to see is two hours, and perhaps they will indeed end up getting that. On that note, I certainly wouldn’t object to an all-nighter, * la Fuji Rock or Blue Mountain. (Didn’t they play some miles-long gig at one of those shows?) But yeah that won’t be happening at 4th&B.

But, we can all be “stoked” (you out-of-towners might hear that round here – it’s Surfer for “ecstatic”) that UW seems to be getting an ok time slot. (Did they get more than ninety minutes at the Fox last year?) I say, however, let us all pray for that extra half hour to round this gig out to two hours. (I personally will be stomping the shite out of that floor when it comes time for an encore.)

Sorry for the long-windedness, but I really just want to say that, as a native San Diegan, I’m here to help with directions, touring/vacation info, etc. And I’d most certainly be interested in any meetup taking place.

Please forgive me for not looking further into the thread, but has a meetup been confirmed as happening?

I know this post is bloody long, and I apologize for that (and expect to take some heat for it), but I guess by making this remark, I’m only making it longer.

A couple of final points – what is this VIP seating (I have standard general admission) and is anyone going to Hard Haunted Mansion the following night?

I love you, my peers, my fellow hardcore Underworld fans.

Rest easy,
Aaron

Very good info! I had no idea how long they were scheduled for, and it's great that they went over half an hour. The only thing that scares me that the same thing might not happen here is that the Bay Area may be a little more wonderfully liberal when it comes to music, particularly toward the legendary Underworld. Ugh! I can't even tell you, man. Most of the crowd there was so very not, well, I don't want to sound elitist, but may I say "evolved"? (And I mean that strictly in a spiritual/mental way, obviously.) I would have loved to see Beetroots too, and they didn't get to go on either, if memory serves. (And I barely missed my beloved Crystal Castles, as I think they were playing as I waited in those obscene lines to get in.)

The crowd seemed so cool at the Fox. I watched the stream, too, and I thought the cast was brilliantly done! "Beautiful Burnout", in particular, annihilated my face.

I really, truly love OWB. Best UW album title ever, too. Musically, it's not my very fave, however, as there's no way I could ever choose between ST, BF & DN. While on the topic, though, would anyone besides myself have preferred that the original title for BF stuck ("Tonight, Matthew, I'm Going To Be Underworld")?

I haven't heard that term in ages! I'd say it's up there with Rad and Bitchin'!!! :D
Hah! Yes, I'm afraid many Surfer terms aren't terribly imaginative, but I suppose they do the job. Cross the pond, my fave UK slang so far has to be "cocker spaniel", as it can mean "one's lifetime", right?

Right, thank you for that. All I care about is being in the front, up against the railing. I'm not sure how early I'll have to get there for that, but I'm thinking it could be early as 4p..

But what about this meetup? I'm especially interested in meeting anyone from outside the States. Ran into a really lovely guy from Wales, I think, at the Forum "show". (He even looked like Rick, so the whole night I was just kind of fascinated by the resemblance.)

Oh, and does anyone know if Yannick and/or King of Snake are still around? I think Yannick is Canadian, and KoS Dutch, perhaps? And particularly Scott Warner, obviously. Didn't he say he was going to the San Diego show? I've never actually met Scott..

But what about this meetup?

Ideas have been kicked around but no one's made the executive decision, as it were. There's conflicting times for doors open and for underworld (screamsanddreams.com STILL isn't updated).

So, unless anyone is damned opposed, let's officially say Johnny Brown's (http://downtownjohnnybrowns.com/) at 6:00pm. That'll give us at least an hour (if doors are at 7) or more (if doors are at 8 and/or if we don't care to hear the openers).

I'll have on a bright red adidas jacket/beard/glasses, so pretty easy to spot. I'll try to be at the bar, but may wind up at a table if it's too packed.

This sounds really good to me, but I have a bit of an embarrassing admission to make. I am, indeed, a fanatical UW fan, as their music has been an *integral* part of my life for the last decade. I just have to see them from the rails (I won't scream like a girl or anything, but my eyes will be *very* big), so I wonder if this does indeed mean I should get in line in the late afternoon.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

If no one does, I'm going to assume that I should go ahead and get there *that* early, so I'll obviously miss the meetup. I really don't want to miss seeing you guys, though, so what if I propose an aftershow meetup at a Denny's (chain diner)? I'll drive whoever doesn't have a car (or as many as will fit in my Civic), and I'll take whoever back to their hotels/cars after..

How does this sound?

Only thing is that I might be waiting around a bit after the gig to see if I can possibly share a hug with R/K/D.

Even if doors are at 7 as originally listed, I think 4 would be WAY too early, imho. At most non-festival shows I've been to (and not just underworld, mind you) you can get right up front during/just after the opening act with a lot of polite excuse-me's and persistence.

i'll be in box 1 of the VIP section with my buddy O.P. my wife decided to stay home so I can go crazy at the show. we'll be the tall guy / short guy combo - kind of like R & K :D

This sounds really good to me, but I have a bit of an embarrassing admission to make. I am, indeed, a fanatical UW fan, as their music has been an *integral* part of my life for the last decade. I just have to see them from the rails (I won't scream like a girl or anything, but my eyes will be *very* big), so I wonder if this does indeed mean I should get in line in the late afternoon.
this sounds exactly like me; except not screaming like a girl, i might even do that.

like its already been said i don't think you'll need to get there too early to hit the rails. i don't see much cross-over between blaqk audio and underworld fans, and i doubt you'll have a gigantic rush once the doors open.

i think meeting at 6 and then maybe heading over shortly thereafter (depending on doors) would be fine. has anyone actually called 4th and B to see if they even know when doors open?

Even if doors are at 7 as originally listed, I think 4 would be WAY too early, imho. At most non-festival shows I've been to (and not just underworld, mind you) you can get right up front during/just after the opening act with a lot of polite excuse-me's and persistence.
This is a good point, and I know it to be true, as well. It's just that I always feel like a bit of an ass with the persistence and all that because I'm a particularly tall guy.

Besides, we're bound to be more fun than standing in line;)
Undoubtedly true, and I'm certainly keeping in mind that there are plenty of very hardcore fans on here who are just as fanatical as myself. I mean, that's bloody well why we're here, innit? :)

So, I think I will meet up with you guys at 6. Still, I gotta tell you, it does make me a little nervous.. (ya know, cuz I'm tall, and I don't like feeling like an ass.)

The drive I'm *easily* most familiar with on this Earth is the one on the 101/405/5 between S.D. and L.A. I say, with it being a Saturday (and not, for example, a Friday), you should very well be alright leaving (no later than) 4p.

Of course, you probably already knew that.. :o

I was emailed today an update from facebook that the name of the event has change to "AEG LIVE presents Underworld feat. Blaqk Audio" ( link (http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=158697924146386) )

I also talked to Judy @ 4th and b about the VIP situation today over the phone. She mentioned that only two boxes were offered during the ticket on-sale and that the remaining boxes are for the VIP w/ "bottle service". So those of us that have box seats up stairs will not have the bottle service. Just thought to clear that up

She also mentioned that the set-times have not been finalized. I sure what Rabbitwork posted in the last page will be true cause I'm also part of the coachella boards and what Dani says typical stands true.

Not sure if I can make the dirty meet up but I'm in box 1 during the show. I'm a big tall guy with a pony tail with a shorter Asian gf. I just got done checking the Gorillaz last night (Brilliant show!) and it's been an AMAZING month of live gigs happening in LA this month (went to nine already). But this Saturday night has always been the one I've been waiting for since the the ticket on-sale. Hope everyone has the time of their life this weekend, I'll be at be at the LA gig the next day as well !! :D

Good points, again, though you never can tell what other music a UW fan is into. We seem to be the most eclectic lot of nearly all music fans.

Didn't you post before that Dani from the Coachella boards said she got 8p from the promoter? Of course, yeah, this could always be wrong... so I think I'll take it upon myself to call up the venue tomorrow eve and try to find out.. or even this eve..

I'm pretty mental with anticipation right now. It strangely feels like nothing between now and tomorrow night even really matters.

Seriously considering going to Hard, too. Does anyone know if we might hear a couple of different tunes on Sunday, whatever they may be?

BrotherLovesDub

Odds are very low for diff. tunes between SD & SF. SF is a festival set with at least 1, maybe up to 3 songs dropped from the club sets. You won't hear Dirty Epic at either, i'd guess, and you most likely won't hear Pearls Girl at either. I'd have to check to see the running time of a show that has DE, PG and Moaner but i'd guess it's closer to 1:45 than 1:15 set time allotted for the SF show.

well, if they're both 'festival sets' you're not going to see any variation. With the exception of Pearls Girl, Dirty Epic and Moaner to end the sets, they've been identical. If the set time is 1:15, you won't hear any changes. If the set time is longer at one than the other, then you'll get either PG, Dirty Epic or maybe Skyscraper and Moaner to finish.

Right, ok, good info. I do particularly hope that we hear PG tomorrow night, but I'm not terribly desperate for that one, as my preferred live versions of the tune predate the year 2000. I really like how much they used to f*ck with it when Emerson was still around. Leading off with that PG improv back from the Mayan Theatre was in-bloody-sane. Talk about getting my arse handed to me, and then some.

And to think I was only able to experience that via live recording. I'm so very grateful for whoever made that. That, and the Sheffield Octogon (which I can't seem to find anymore for some reason), particularly -- though any live UW is never anything but stellar, of course.

P. S. I know this doesn't really belong in this thread, so please forgive the off-topicness, as I don't intend to stray too long -- but did anyone see "Let Me In" with "Doot Doot" playing in the "seclusion scene"? Was that not breathtaking?

i had previously refused to see "let me in" because the original is so amazing, but now i'll have to just for that scene. really like its usage in "vanilla sky".

for tomorrow all i'm really hoping for is always loved a film (which is probably a guarantee; definitely my fav track on barking right now), king of snake, and if for some reason the star align properly juanita/kiteless.

does anyone know the last time they've played something from MK1 era?

Vin sounds like a nice joint. I'm up for Johnny's, Vin, or hopping around the neighborhood. I'll be down in SD super early (leaving Ventura County at dawn...hate traffic).

Also, I just booked a room in Mission Valley because I don't want to risk the ride home amongst the holiday partiers. If any Dirts don't feel like the drive back to LaLaLand (and aren't inherently psychotic...aside from being manic fans, which is a given), you're welcome to message me or hit me at the meetup if you need a place to crash.

No clue what I'm wearing...that's a game time decision. I'll definitely be wearing red high top converse, sunglasses, and will be roaming the Gaslamp from 4:00 on. Can't wait for the show. Best coast indeed.

Great great show...back safe at the hotel. Met some nice people where my brother and I wound up in the center of the floor. Hopefully some of them were 'dirties'. Karl's singing was great, but he must be extremely fatigued from being sick and all. Incredible mixes of the older stuff particularly Dark Train and Rez/ Cowgirl. I clocked Rez/Cowgirl at around 14 min. and King of Snake about 13 min.

Plus Dirty Epic!

The new stuff sounds great live. Some inventive costumes buy some of the attendees. All around a perfect night.

can't complain about the 2hr. set, though between the absence of the projections and karl's regular stamina, i found myself feeling a bit misplaced at times. this was a first Underworld gig for several of my mates and i'm not quite sure they got a complete experience.

on a side note, there was an oversight with pacing the photographers on the first 3 songs. we typically get the first 15 minutes or 3 songs (to shoot in the pit) of the set however, we ended up getting the second 15 minutes of the show which landed on Nu-Train, an almost 10 minutes of pitch black with no karl in sight.

good news is, i still manged to pull off a nice sum of photos throughout the whole set. stay tuned for those:)

I have to say, ALAF sounds far, far better live than on the record. Really, the whole Downpipe/ALAF/Dark Train opening works incredibly well. It might not be improvised but the guys definitely knew what they were doing when the designed the opening sequence to this tour.

As others have said, this version of Dark Train was singularly rocking. Tremendous groove, banging beat. Rez also had an almost Kitten-esque quality that night. And Moaner -- holy shit, it was awesome. A startlingly new intro/segue out of Dirty Epic. This is a song that's rarely remixed on stage so I was really glad to hear this version. Hopefully it'll emerge on a recording so everyone can hear just what a few changes can do to this ancient track.

It was obvious to me that Karl wasn't at the top of his game but I think he adapted his vocals well tot he situation. In some cases, like Cowgirl, he sounded more like the original album version, which is not something you hear live much given the song's evolution over the years. I also didn't miss him dancing around during the more instrumental tracks, it was fun to just dance to Rick & Darren's work to the sights of their silhouettes and not be distracted by Karl's madness. Nothing against Karl's madness, mind, but it was kind of a cool change of scenery.

The setlist was of course as expected, with Dirty Epic being the only deep cut. It was a beautiful version, though, one of the best live performances I've heard. It sounded to me like they've finally begin filter-fiddling around with Scribble, and the Diamond Jigsaw performance was really high energy and groovy. The only thing that really didn't work for me was Bird 1. Just not a good live track, at least not in the middle of the show.

Had a great time. The bartender wearing the Heineken costume was serving up incredibly loaded drinks. I ended up kissing the toilet back at the hotel but loved every second before that. Now I'm rallying up energy to head over to the Shrine. Pity I didn't get to meet any of you but I did have about 3 different groups of friends there.

Definitely a great night.

glad to know i'm not the only one who heard something "kitten-esque" going on there. i was ready to lose my mind (i did anyway, but kitten would've been a real treat).

this was my first UW show (fan for 13 years and counting) and i could tell even from hearing/watching live recordings that karl was not his usual self at the start. once i saw a smile from him during i think it was two months off it was like a sign things were going to be alright. i do have to say that this is the first time i've ever been at a live gig (for any band) where i completely forgot i was watching a band perform music. an unusual sense of calm and belonging settled in about halfway through the performance and now that the show is over it feels like i went to an amazing place that hopefully someday i can return to, and not just a simple show with some boys of essex twiddling knobs and strumming guitars.

the born slippy performance nuxx was out of this world. met some awesome fans in line (not sure if any of you were dirts) and the crowd was great. amazing show all around.

I totally thought Rez was Kittens at first.

What a great night. The boys did indeed wreck the joint. Kind of nice without all the visual hoopla and just having a good night of music.

I had no idea Karl was under the weather, though he did seem less jumpy. The whole gig had a quality about it that reminded me of seeing them in the late 90's. Maybe it was just the stripped down nature of the show. It felt like the House of Blues gig in Vegas many, many years ago.

Even the costumes didn't get in the way of our enjoyment. Now for the negative, Black Audio was awful. We got there halfway through their set and it still felt like it went on for hours....and man, is 4th and B a dump.

A great night, a great setlist...and now on to the Shrine for the last stand.

i didn't think blaqk audio was too bad. i'm not a huge fan but i'm familiar with a handful of their tracks and its not bad. they were kind of shoved off to the side there and clearly someone forgot to turn half the lights on for the first 2.5 songs. i thought davey (singer) was pretty entertaining to watch. the sound quality was terrible though, i could barely make his singing other than mostly noise.

on the other hand, fernando or dj fernando or "some guy who bought a macbook" whatever his name was, the dj before blaqk and in-between was an absolute zero. apparently to dj you don't have a) stick with a genre or semi-related genres b) know how to pick an appropriate order of songs or c) even know how to beatmatch, just fade one track out or stop playing it altogether. absolute garbage.

I was at the Vegas gig in '99, too. That was the ultimate in a stripped down Underworld show. If memory serves me correctly, that place was smaller than 4th and B.

Made it back to Phoenix in one piece. I don't know how it will take me to be able to listen to the CD versions of last night's setlist without the glorious performances of last night rooted in my brain.

I will run through a brick wall for a boot of this show.

I totally forgot to ask, but did anyone get a download code last night? I didn't see anyone passing anything out. Is there any way we can prove with our stubs or receipt that we saw a non-festival show and get the download because I really, really, really would have loved to have gotten that (they should have given them out when we entered the venue).

I will run through a brick wall for a boot of this show.
Hopefully you won't have to. I got it, but I moved up after Blaqk Audio's fans left and therefore lost most of the sound coming off the stacks. So hopefully another person was able to capture a better recording. I'm burnt out after an exhausting Amtrak trip home (delayed thanks to Vandenberg deciding to launch a Delta II, which they then decided not to launch...ugh), but I'll see how bad my recording turning out after I get that elusive thing called sleep.

i got to the venue early so i managed to get parking at the venue, took pic of the gear when i paid for parking
http://alaundre.com/mixes/gear.jpg

i wasn't planning on doing any recording so i only had my cell with me, i was fairly sure my shooting was crap, but i thought i'd share these vids anyway (i didn't convert these or anything, they are all in 3gp format):

1) after i parked, i went to the front of the venue (the doors were open since they were either moving some stuff in or out) and music started playing so i snuck in to see who it was:D. I was there for about 2 or 3 minutes before i went outside (posted it in this thread:D), then went back and decided to record the rehearsal (sorry, i was trying to be discreet, i held the camera by my stomach so it's not aimed or focused on anything). I didn't know Karl was sick that day, but his voice was definitely clearer during the run thru. When I stopped recording, I turned around and there were about 5-7 people further behind me (i guess a few other dirties were there?). It would be another 4 or 5 minutes before one of the 4th&B guys kicked us out.

(right click and save these to download)
http://alaundre.com/mixes/uw1.3gp

2) the first 24 minutes of the show (audio/video quailty isn't that good, i've never really used the video feature on the phone). It's split up into 4 files cuz I couldn't make up my mind whether I should just watch the show or keep recording so there's about a few seconds up to a minute gap between the files (the 3rd link is 800 MBs)
http://alaundre.com/mixes/uw2.3gp
http://alaundre.com/mixes/uw3.3gp
http://alaundre.com/mixes/uw4.3gp
http://alaundre.com/mixes/uw5.3gp

I'll leave the links up just for a week, you guys are free to do what you want with them.

Reading back on this thread, I guess Rabbitwork was the guy I was chatting with at the front of the line and at the very front of the show. As i was leaving the parking lot, i spotted Nate & Jillian from Omaha (don't know if they're dirties, but they were with us at the front of the line) and I offered them a ride back to their hotel.

Also, they were handing out the video cards sometime after they opened the doors (got mine when i was hanging out at the front of the stage...but there were only a handful of people inside the venue at that point.)

Finally home after a crazy weekend. Back to back Underworld Saturday and DJ Shadow Sunday has me aching but happy.

Thanks Chris M for suggesting the meetup location! Vin de Syrah is a really excellent spot, though I wish more dirties would have shown. I did meet Pricey on the street just before heading in, though:D
Great to meet sockman & his girl, RisePigRise, and especially Jon Paul...dude can party;)
I wanted to head up to the boxes to find ultradave, but couldn't get up there with the genadmin ticket, and kept an eye out for a Clark Kent Andy, but never found one.

The show itself was great! I think Karl was as bummed as us that he wasn't feeling great, but his vocal certainly didn't seem affected at all. As mentioned before, it was both strange to see him exit the stage for NuTrain, Rez, etc. but also a nice change of pace that let Rick and Darren really shine.

Dirty Epic into Moaner...stunning!

btw, I've got two extra download cards. Anyone who was at a show that didn't get one, PM me.

(also, longest show thread ever?)

while making my image selections and seeing the sincere expression of karl's under the weather smirk, it suddenly occurred that i am in fact a hyper critical jerk for my earlier remarks. these guys did so well given the nature of the circumstances... class act as always.

thank you, guys for the feedback! it means a lot coming form the UW community. overall the pictures probably appeared more minimal in contrast with the other gigs, this was the case with the absence of the projections and full light curtain.

Yeah, sorry, I didn't post that on here (not sure if it was appropriate). I shared it on RTSR first, but the dime one has pics and a longer text file (where I just blab away more).

As for quality, I put samples on dime. For those not on there, I just made an mp3 of 2 Months Off at Megaupload: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=62WKEP6I (and I'll post that on RTSR).

Personally, I'm not happy with it because of the audience noise that got picked up, but I like listening to it as a memento.
