New Aussie horror/thriller loosely based on the Falconio murder/Backpacker murders.

Getting absolutely awesome reviews over here, people calling it the most disturbing piece of film even produced. Lots and lots of walkouts. I'm going to go see it this weekend.

BUT

this movie is really really great. If you go in expecting wall-to-wall horror you will be disappointed as it takes its time pacing-wise.... relying on the beautiful scenery and the actors for a slow build until you finally see John Jarratt pop up. The movie is really really great though.... i had an opportunity to see it a few weeks ago and was really blown away by it. The director is now doing a giant croc movie and i think i heard Jarratt was gonna be in it as well as maybe having a part in the new Quentin Tarantino movie. There was a whole story that Tarantino told when he was in town showing this movie from the 80s called Dark Age (a fantastic Australian giant croc movie shot by Andrew Lesnie who went on to shoot the lord of the rings trilogy) about how John Jarratt is his favorite Australian actor and him saying that indirectly caused Jarratt to get the part in Wolf Creek...

anyway... yeah definitely go and see this but don't expect it to be on a completely higher level. it's still just a horror movie.

Saw this a few weeks back and was really underwhelmed. Granted, the first half had a nice buildup with great cinematography, but the last half was like *WTF*? Where did the script go? The ending in particular was extremely lame, and ruined the film for me - it would have been better if they'd shaved the last 10 minutes completely, rather than tie things up in such a bad way.

I saw it last night, it's a good film, but certainly not the most disturbing thing ever made. I didn't find it any worse than, say, Last House on the Left or Texas Chainsaw Massacre (which it is highly derivative from), and that's got a good twenty-five years or so on this film.

John Jarrat is so menacing in it. I like the way he comes off as a fairly amiable bloke to begin with. You really do want to like him. But then when you witness this truly horrifying side to him, he just oozes power and malice and sadism. The minimalist soundtrack was also nice, especially during the 'waking up' scene.

Have to agree with you Goat in being a bit disappointed in what felt like a fairly rushed ending.

Big boo's go to the two idiots in the cinema that I saw it in, who took their mentally handicapped friend along with them to the movie. Once all the nasty shit started to happen he promptly freaked out, wailing and kicking the chair in front of him, and was escorted out the cinema. Nice work guys.

Great film. Not a typical horror movie, with a long build up to the final violent conclusion, and I think it works well. John Jarratt is fantastic in this and it is especially funny for us who have watched him on Better Homes & Gardens!:)
