Can someone break down audioscrobbler for me? I don't seem to understand it. Is it purely statistical? What is it's function? How is the data collected?

It's sunday. And it's beautiful here in Brooklyn.

You download a plugin fo winamp or whatever player you use and when you play a song it sends the artist and title to the audioscrobbler database. It has no other function than to document your listening habits. Then it can remommend new music based on what similar listeners like or whatever.

Been meaning to join for a while, so I just did.

How often does the plugin update your profile?

generally, it submits every song you play in the middle of the track or so... ("Recent Tracks")

updates on the weekly charts are done weekly, but this may differ a bit

the "Top Artists" and "Top Tracks" are updated "periodically", depending on the size of your musical profile (as a very large profile only changes, if you played another big bunch of music).

also, read the FAQ (http://www.audioscrobbler.com/help/faq.php#Submissions-caching)

I saw that too, but he's saying nothing. Nothing beyond the usual enigmatic oddness, anyway.

is there a "dirty" group? I'd be interesting to see/hear what others are listening to (I think each group eventually has its own radio station).

Does this only update for stuff you've played on your PC/Mac?

What I'm getting at is I rarely play music on my computer while I'm home but I use my iPod a TON. Everytime you plug in the iPod, play history gets updated in iTunes. Anyone know if it sends that data or just realtime play stats?
