Interesting and informative article on the future of DJ style entertainment - my own personal opinion is that it's the leaps into new mediums that's kept the scene alive and interesting (remember Simon's article about Optimo? as with everything else they were way ahead of their time..).

Theres definatly a lot more laptops being used in dance music for live shows, which is ok,but not as good as seeing someone like Orbital running around and doing there stuff.I was watching Kraftwerk the other day and the performance of 4 blokes on a laptop just looked so fucking boring. Most intresting person i saw with a laptop is Dressed In Wires, who usually smashes his stuff up at the end of a set, last time i saw him it was with a chair...

Ipod mixing seems a bit of a wank IMO, stick with the 12"s

"What I think people like is to see that someone's doing something really live, and to hear mistakes.

"So if someone does a perfectly beatmatched, perfectly programmed DJ set on their laptop, the suspicion will always be that they spent hours pre-preparing it at home and they just came to the club and pressed play - which is against the whole ethos of doing something live. "I think people will rapidly tire of that

Its definatly a good thing to see people fuck up as you do know its live, when i saw UW they fucked up during the breakdown of TMO with some weird distorion effect that came in, i even saw someone freestyling over instrumental stuff and the record running out.

isn't the whole point of dance music to, you know, dance? what matters is what's coming out of the speakers.

hell, surgeon stands absolutely motionless with just his face illuminated by his powerbook screen and he rips up the joint every single time.

Yer hopefully, but if i'm wathcing someone whos standing there motionless, it kinds of sets the vibe for the crowd.

Then you go to the wrong parties, man.

Besides, Kraftwerk sitting motionless is part of the charm. They're robots after all.

I haven't been to a decent one for a while.

Surely though if you saw someone DJ'ing on an Ipod you would never know how live it was.

It's easy when everyone uses Ableton Live!

In any case, why does it matter how live it is? A DJ who can't react to the crowd is going to suck, so playing from a tape will always suck, but DJ'ing tracks from two iPods is fine.

That happened halfway through Luciano's set at Mutek too, except I don't think it was his laptop that crapped out. He had a big pile of boxen.
