View Full Version : Pendulum, or, I like goofy DnB.

I recently had a small discussion (http://www.livejournal.com/users/detour/453783.html?nc=13) on my lj regarding aussie DnB outfit Pendulum. After doing the rounds of a few DnB boards and whatnot, I found that a majority of people consider the goofy jump-up stuff to be inferior to other, more 'innovative' and deep sounds and styles.

Was wondering what the general consensus is on dirty. I can see how jump-up can be seen as the DnB equivalent to Hard-Floor trance/house, but I guess I never really minded that either. I've always been a big fan of the whole 'omg-fuck-you-and-your-family-too' dance floor destroyers, going back to Tim and Misjah thumping 2000 kids at some bush-doof rave back in the 90's, and I guess I kinda get the same vibe from this jump-up stuff.

Specifically, Pendulum seem to marry the 'omg-fuck-you-and-your-family-too' style heard in lame clubs everywhere, and enough interesting ideas to actually engage me (whereas the former is usually a means to a (more often that not) drug fuelled stomp-a-thon).

Obviously I've had a bottle of wine and am not making much sense, but there you go.

They know how to make tracks. The songs on 'Hold Your Colour' are about two-three minutes too long, easy. It doesn't give me that feel good vibe that the Avalanches have. If they'd ditch some of the cheesy sounds it'd hook me more.

Lukeyd.. is he talking about clownstep?its what i described clownstep to you as, but better than the examples i gave. it hats place, but as the guy on lj quite rightly says, its sorta the cheese of the genre

i think it is a pretty good albumn personally. i don' think it is too cheesy, the tracks could vary a bit more, or be a bit shorter though i suppose

I love the Pendulum stuff I've heard so far (I was a big fan of the Urban Takeover stuff some time back).

I can see a lot of d n b heads going 'but its not real d n b' but I think they're missing the point, its Pendulums version of d n b and if every artist within every genre sounded exactly the same the world would be a lot less interesting.

Oh and the video for Slam is great too :D

Pendulum is so good. It's accessible drum and bass with more energy than lots of the stuff going on. Cool samples sometimes too. 'Another Planet' is like 12 minutes long but epic.

got the album on Wednesday. I absolutely love it, every track on there is a belter, no filler whatsoever. Highly recommended.
