Here's a thought, rather than posting a list of records, our proverbial top 5 and top 10, etc. What if we pick only one record to buy for 2005? You know if someone said: "I only have money to buy one record this whole year (up to September obviously) what should I buy?"
My answer:
Jamie Lidell's Multiply.
Description:
Amazing vocals, Lush production, and surprisingly cross platform (my euphimism for people who have varying musical tastes). Think Stevie Wonder's Talking Book meets 2005 and Ray Charles.

Nothing has really grabbed me by the balls this year (except for your mother). Best album I've bought this year is Rilo Kiley's "The Execution of All Things", but that came out a few years ago.

until a few weeks ago i would have said Bloc Party's silent alarm with nine black alps' everthing is a close second............but i have to recommend
Black rebel motorcycle club - Howl
Despite the evolution in sound you can still tell its BRMC, but its full of blues, folk, country, gospel influences and is fantastic. the power and quality of the song writing really stands on on the acoustic or paino driven numbers
Hmmm hard question.
The only 2005 that really made me jump is Multiply by Jamie lidell, but I still like a lot Untilted by Autechre and Sufjan Stevens' exploration of the Illinois:D

Well so far in 2005 the only thing I've gotten that I'd hate to live without is M83 "Before the Dawn Heals Us" I've listened to it so much.
Got to see them in Toronto in the spring too, they put on a stellar show, one of the best I've gone to this year (along with Meat Beat Manifesto).

I saw her at Lowlands and I didn't know anything of her music, but was expecting a Moloko kind of dancey thing. Well, it wasn't really :p So I wasn't too impressed. I do think that if you know her music, it's enjoyable, she puts on a nice show anyway.

What kind of lazy fucking dimwit complains about having to write more than 10 letters in a post? Oh, probably one that'd pick underworlds new album as this years best. The rules are there to deter retards like you from posting.

Problem with my description of the parameters:
I wanted to know why and what it sounded like!
One word answers aren't very enticing.
Not an easy task, but I must admit Antony and the Johnsons did something to me. Not only did i love "I am a bird now", but it got me seeking out a whole new ocean of music i haven't heard before.
I also remember the first time i put Jamie Lindell in the player. Bought it unheard, and can't say i regret it. ;)

This is a thread called 'Only one record', not 'lets be an obnoxious twat' so stick to picking your one record for 2005

Wow.
I was under impressed by this. Why? I like about a quarter of the record. But thought the songs lacked the panache and "umph" of the first two.

I don't think there's been anything I've insanely frothed over this year, but I confess I haven't been looking as hard as I normally would.
(If it wasn't for this forum I'd be even more stuffed.)
I did really like Multiply though. Better than the old super_collider stuff (I liked that too, but it was a bit of an uneasy combination of stuff).
If Prince hadn't disappeared up his own bottom years ago, he might have made this record. If you'll excuse the lazy, obvious comparison. :D

Fractions, by Decoder Ring.
when Death In Vegas toured sydney for their Scorpio Rising album, people around here complained that they could've seen an identical or better show for a third of the ticket price with local band Decoder Ring. So that sort of explains what Decoder Ring used to sounds like.
Now they've taken their sound and evolved it further to something much more impressive. the sticker on their new cd says something about "...rollercoaster of an album that spans dark electro, euphoric pop, intimate ballards and dancefloor anthems", and I think the sticker may be under-selling it a bit. :p
Wow.

This album is a definitely a 'grower'. When i first heard it i thought it was 'OK' but the more i listen the better it gets (it's great to listen to when you're stoned, especially the second half of the album). I think it's their best work since Definitely Maybe. It's constantly on my car CD and has been for quite a while now along with Milo, the Killers, Bloc Party, Razorlight and Forever Faithless - all great albums:D.
